2020worldseries reacted to Troll Daddy in Pujols to have bone spurs removed from his elbow
Blue Jay have a club option for 1yr/7M ... there you go. He can earn another million in incentives.

2020worldseries reacted to Jeff Fletcher in Did the Ohtani injury make the halos better for 2019?
Something like that
remember when everyone said Pujols would always hit behind Trout?
Upton arrived and he hit behind Trout. Upton is clearly better than Pujols, so is Ohtani.
They aren’t going to mess with Pujols for the sake of Marte or Fernandez or Valbuena or even Cron, but for a someone legit, they will.
I think Pujols will play a lot of 1B and may require a stint or two on the DL to refresh.
Also, you can say to Pujols: “You’re our best first baseman, not our best DH. Do the best you can this winter to prepare your body to play 1B.”
Im sure he’d say: “I can do it.”
And if it turns out he can’t and he needs to go on the DL, c’est la vie.

I’m going to agree with this.

2020worldseries reacted to Stradling in Now that Tyler Skaggs is still going to be out a while longer
You are the equivalent of all or nothing. They aren’t signing a 1 and a 2 and because of that you will not be interested. So lets see, this off season you want then to sign or trade for a 1 and a 2 and sign Machado. Anything else?

I'd be shocked if Eppler didn't make an aggressive run at Corbin or Keuchel.

2020worldseries reacted to Angel Oracle in Shohei Ohtani Has New UCL Damage
Arte has only had one big money signing after the Hackilton fiasco almost 6 years ago, and even that one was re-signing Upton to a contract not much different from the one they acquired when trading for him.
If Arte re-signs Trout AND Simba (critical team leader and only turned 29 this week), and then signs Arenado after 2020, that would go a ways towards keeping a team (with an emerging farm system) in post-season contention through the 2020's and maybe give the 2000s a decent run for the money. And yes, the Astros are still likely to be solid in the next decade.
And yes, Trout can still be there for his family and extended family back east during November through early February each off-season, while still playing for the Halos after 2020.

Um, every team had access to medicals...every team said he would be allowed to be a two way player...every team was willing to pay the money knowing his UCL could pop.
Difference is he chose the Angels...not sure how that makes them foolish
And the rest is the usual speculative drivel...

2020worldseries reacted to Troll Daddy in Should the Angels adjust how they value/view Ohtani?
I think Ohtani will dictate his own view/future. I'm sure the Angels would love to see him as a dominant #1 in their rotation.

2020worldseries reacted to Vlad27Trout27 in Dylan Bundy?
Could be a solid trade piece for us next season. His numbers do not look good, but the stuff is solid. Taking him out of the Al east could be quite good for him, Looking at his ex-teammate Gausman, since leaving the Al East he's pitched really well with the Braves. These are Gausman's stats from the Last 15 games:
Most of would probably agreed with me, that Bundy has much better stuff than Gausman. He could be solid rotation option next year, behind SKaggs and Heaney.

I'm hoping this whole unit starts at Burlington. Adams and Knowles in the OF, Nonie along for the ride too, maybe Orlando Martinez as well if he starts the season in Burlington again, Jackson, Maitan, Soto in the IF. Soriano, Yan, Swanda in the rotation.
That'd be a fun team.

They had to test it to see if the elbow would hold up. The ligament doesn’t get stronger with more rest once it is 100% healed. The doctors said it was as healed as it was going to get. Now they have their answer instead of having this happen in spring training next year. More rest would not have helped. More rest would not have helped. More rest would not have helped. Should I type it again?

From presser...
Angels are waiting to see IF he wants the surgery... Its up to Shohei.
They won't know how long between surgery and when he could DH until it gets done.
Angels were aware this could be the outcome.
Plan is for him to hit still. They will discuss it with Ohtani on monday.
Angels have not written off PRP injections... Every player is different, team will look at all medical options...
Emotional blow for organization and the player. Eppler says team and player committed to each other.
Team still sees him as a two way player.
Angels doctors have recommended TJS. Of that there is no doubt. Still up to the player.
If you throw 100 mph you run the risk of injury....
Team will not trade Trout ... Team will continue to invest, improve team. Looking at all ways to contend next year.
Hitting didn't impact elbow.
Angels had Ohtani pitch simulated games in lieu of minor league games for greater control of his recovery. All medical data cleared him to throw.
.....
Presser over.

Just for the purpose of recognizing the timeline, last years important dates were as follows:
nov2 - free agency begins
nov6 - qual offer deadline
nov13-16 - gm meetings
nov16 - deadline to accept qual offer
nov20 - reserve deadline - finalize 40 man ahead of rule 5 draft. includes setting all milb rosters as well.
dec1 - non tender deadline.
dec10-14 - winter meetings
dec14 - rule 5 draft
players currently on the 60 day DL need to be added to the 40man by the reserve deadline
Surely protected:
OF - Trout, Calhoun, Upton, Hermosillo (4)
IF - Ward, Fletcher, Cozart, Pujols, Simmons, JMF (6)
C -
SP - Heaney, Skaggs, Barria, Ohtani, Felix Pena, Tropeano (6)
RP - Middleton, Buttrey, Anderson, Jerez (4)
Total: 20
Off the 40-man for the rule 5 deadline:
Johnson, Tazawa, Blake Wood, Richards, Chris Young
Currently on the 60 day DL and on the bubble:
Lamb, Meyer, JC Ramirez, Jewell (4)
Currently on the 40 man and on the bubble:
IF - Cowart, Marte (2)
OF - Blash, EYjr (2)
C - Briceno, Arcia, Hudson (3)
SP - Farrell, Bridwell, McGuire, Castillo, Shoe (5)
RP - Parker, Cam, Alvarez, Robles, Noe, Despaigne, Almonte, Cole, Paredes (9)
total: 21
Currently not on the 40 man but potentially needing to be:
IF - Walsh, Rengifo, Houchins, Sherman Johnson, Hutton Moyer, Baldoquin, Yacinich (8)
OF - Way, Brendon Sanger (2)
C - Wade Wass (1)
SP - Gatto, Jose Suarez, Luis Pena, Nate Smith, Tyler Carpenter, Jose Rodriguez (6)
RP - Connor Lillis-White, Nathan Bates, Adrian Almeida, Samil De Los Santos, Morris, Diaz, Hofacket (6)
total: 24
That's a total of 68 players.
20 are set. so 48 players to fill the final 20. Important to keep in mind that it's not just about who the Angels want to keep but who they think will get snagged on to a major league roster for an entire year.
Houchins, Sherm, Moyer, Yacinich, Carpenter, Jose Rodriguez, Smith, Bates, De Los Santos, Morris, Diaz, Hofacket, Wass, Sanger, Way all won't be protected. That's (15).
Others I think make it for sure:
C - briceno, arcia (2)
IF - Walsh, Rengifo (2)
OF -
SP - Jose Suarez, Luis Pena, Shoemaker (3)
RP - Parker, Robles, Cole, Meyer, JC Ramirez, Jewell (6)
total of 13. That leaves another seven spots for the following 20:
IF - Cowart, Marte, Baldoquin
OF - Blash, EYjr
C- Hudson
SP - Gatto, Lamb, Farrell, Mcguire, Castillo, Bridwell
RP - Connor Lillis-White, Almeida, Cam, Alvarez, Noe, Paredes, Almonte, Despainge
I don't think they'll protect Baldoquin, Lillis- White, Almeida, Despainge, and Almonte.
I think they'll release or DFA Paredes, Lamb, Hudson, Blash, EYjr
That leaves seven spots for Gatto, Cowart, Marte, Farrell, Mcguire, Castillo, Bridwell, Cam, Alvarez, Noe.
Mcguire, Cam and Alvarez are likely to make it.
So four spots for Marte, Gatto, Cowart, Farrell, Mcguire, Castillo, Bridwell, and Noe.
I'm gonna go with Gatto, Farrell, Mcguire and Bridwell. No one is going to add Castillo to their 40 man. Noe is bad. Marte is replaceable. I could see us doing a benign trade where Cowart goes for some other failed prospect. Hopefully a pitcher.
At the end of the day, there aren't any significant players to get in a twist over.

2020worldseries reacted to Hubs in Shohei Ohtani Has New UCL Damage
Okay my 2 cents, a lot of you drastically underestimate the time needed to recover from TJ. JC Ramirez had it in April and he will likely not pitch until August of Next year.
When Garrett did his, he was guaranteed to be out all of 2019. He could've waited to the end of the year, and he still wouldn't be ready until 2020.
When Ohtani was pulled in June, if he had the surgery then, he'd have been out as a hitter minimum until November. So it made sense to wait. As a pitcher a June TJ pretty much still puts you out for all of the following year, maybe you can be back by September 1. 15 months recovery minimum. There are guys who come back in 12, but they are rare.
So 15 months from October is January of 2020. Same timeline as a pitcher, same as a hitter. Except now he's got two more months as a hitter under his belt.
-
2020worldseries reacted to totdprods in Shohei Ohtani Has New UCL Damage
And a good enough two months to know it's worth having him DH next year, instead of assuming he would be, or not knowing if he'd be good enough, and relying on other players to fill that role too.

2020worldseries reacted to Angel Oracle in Shohei Ohtani Has New UCL Damage
Just as long as Pujols doesn't exceed 80 starts in either 2019 or 2020, the Halos will have a better chance of succeeding. Time to ease him into retirement, as he turns 39 in 2019. And, at this point, he is best used as a part-time player. He's going to get paid the same whether playing 80 games or 120 games or zero games. He better hit better vs lefties, than he did this season.

Best bad news ever.
Had this not happened now the situation becomes Garret Richards part two.... a wait for the inevitable while pinning their hopes on a balky elbow not blowing up. No thanks, the last two years were enough of that bullshit.
The offseason focus is clearer than ever. Now they need to figure out if he'll be able to DH or not and if not.... Find a 1Bman

FRANCHISE OVER
joking aside. This is for the best. The worst thing that could have happened was him making 2 or 3 starts here to close the season and then get hurt in spring. Which would have been been inevitable. This is actually a big break for them as far as I’m concerned.
