popo85 reacted to Second Base in Sign Alex Wood or Trade Prospects for a Starting Pitcher?
I'd like to see the Angels bring in two more pitchers. Let's say for the sake of the argument, it's Price and Wood.
What I'd really like to see is Joe Maddon come in and legitimately tell every single pitcher on staff that they're competing for their job, and actually have the balls to back it up. If Teheran or Bundy suck, I want to see him pull the plug, I don't care if the team invested in these guys or not. We don't have a single ace that's been so good you give them the benefit of the doubt.
I don't care if our best performers are freaking Dillon Peters and Jose Suarez. Whoever earns it should get the spot. Light a fire under these guys and let them know they're playing for their career, and that nothing is guaranteed.

Good defensive catcher to go with Stassi, who is also a defensive specialist. Won't get any offense from catcher, but when you upgrade at 3B the way the Angels did, am offensive force at catcher isn't a necessity.
At 1/6 or 1/7, it's an ok investment I think. Don't expect much excitement, just boring old using your body to block pass balls and stealing strikes by great framing. You know, the stuff that actually matters.

I think Eppler  has been on vacation. Maybe next week we can get a new starting pitcher and a catcher or 2.

I think it’s still a bit early to judge him either way but the Halos haven’t been really close to making the post season in his 4 years with the club. In fact, they seem to have gotten worse

It's funny how everyone went from, "The Angels aren't even close to being done!" to "The Angels probably aren't done." to "The Angels might be done." and now to "The Angels are probably done."
We are one Eppler quote saying "he's comfortable with the outcome staff" away from calling it.
Most glaring team need in recent history, with the most money available to spend maybe ever, and the deepest free agent and trade class ever available for pitchers, and Eppler comes away with Dylan Bundy and Julio Teheran.
    This is depressing.

Then you don’t do it. Boyd has literally never even had one year of an ERA under 4 and he’s like 29 and has pitched in a pitchers park. Regardless of if we need pitching, I think trading Boyd for Marsh Is stupid. If we’re going to trade marsh, it needs to be for someone worth it. Boyd isn’t it.

I have it on good authority that the Angels would have signed both Cole and Keuchel, but they saw @popo85's post and decided to sign elsewhere.
Cole had a sign at his conference that said "Grammar Fan For Life."
    It's so disappointing.

That’s pretty sad that David Price is a top option. $32M/yr is really steep. I’d feel better if Boston ate $15M/yr so we’d owe him $17M, but there’s no way that happens.

Eppler has done a lot of good things (extending Trout, convincing Ohtani to sign here, rebuilding the farm system, etc. etc.). With that said, this game is all about results on the field. So far, the Angels have yet to make the postseason under his reign and have had poor records. One also has to feel that he’s had plenty of time to fix this team. He’s well past the point of being new on the job. If the Angels fail to make the postseason this upcoming season (which would likely be due to the pitching staff), he’ll most likely be gone. I hope he can surprise by acquiring a good starter via trade soon rather than just being content with who he’s gotten.

It really is incredible that some of you have watched this team over the last 3 and 4 years and think that “goddamn, if not for the incompetence of Billy Eppler the Angels could have been repeating 2014”

im sorry, you guys running with that take are baby brained morons.  You’re completely excluding the injuries and the genuinely bad rosters that the Angels have had.  Those 2016 and 2017 teams were extremely bad and the presence of Mike Trout probably had the effect of keeping them from being 100 game losers.  Which, was actually maybe bad.  They got lucky to get Adell.  But this team has had middling picks.  And that makes it tough.

I disagree with this..I think some people are just too reactive. I haven't blamed Eppler...yet. I think/know he was put in a tough spot. However, at a certain point you are the GM and you do have the best player in the world and a greater than average budget. At some point you have to address the glaring issue and stop hoping that guys perform to their potential while having no injuries. All how you do that is your issue, not mine.
And I just don't get the sentiment of "well if you could do the job better"... We are fans. We are the reason these guys get paid (including Eppler). We are the customer. It is our right to criticize. I don't see why, as a paying customer (specifically a loyal one), it is taboo to expect those who are in charge of putting together the on field product shouldn't be expected to come through despite the surface issues. In other words, regardless of all of the excuses we are well within right and reason to expect Eppler to be able to make something happen. That's why he's the to GM of a multi billion dollar franchise.

popo85 reacted to mmc in Our competition for the Wild Card next season
Barring something major happening, I think it’s safe to say the Yankees and Astros are the favorites for the AL East and West.  So which teams do you expect to be in contention for Wild Card spots along with the Angels next season, and how do you think our roster fares alongside them?

The teams I see being our main competition are the incumbent Rays and A’s, along with the Indians, Twins, White Sox (one of these teams will win the AL Central), and Rangers, with the Blue Jays, and Red Sox also have an outside shot.
As it stands, I don’t think there is any way this team is better than the Rays.  Glasnow, Snell, and Morton are better than any starter on this team, I think their bullpen is much better, and their offense is good in their own right as well.  The A’s I don’t really think look better on paper than the Angels, but they finished much better last year and didn’t exactly lose anyone important, and their rotation has very high upside.  The Rangers are hard for me to get a read on, their rotation looks much better than ours, but I’m not certain they have enough offense to get them into the playoffs.  Of course, they are still in the market for big name offensive players, so this could change.  The Twins just won 100 games, and didn’t really lose anyone outside of Gibson and Dyson.  They are in the hunt for Josh Donaldson and I think will win the division, thus I expect the Indians and White Sox to be WC contenders.  The White Sox have made big improvements, but it’s hard to predict how they’ll finish.  Big rookie seasons from Madrigal, Robert, and Kopech, plus strides from Cease and Lopez and this team can be very dangerous.  They have the potential to be better than us, but it’s hard to predict how likely it is.  The Indians are hard to predict, as it’s still unclear what the future is for Clevinger and Lindor.  If they trade both,  I expect our roster to be better, but if they keep both, or even just Clevinger, their rotation and bullpen will be better than ours, with Bieber, Clevinger (if he stays), Civale, Plesac, and Carrasco.

Then we have the Red Sox and Blue Jays, who seem to have every intention of competing, but are undergoing a massive roster overhaul.  Boston finished higher than the Angels last season, but if they move Betts and one or more of Price and Sale, then I think we will be better.  Hard to say until we see who’s still on the roster come opening day.  The Blue Jays added Ryu, Roark, and Yamaguchi to help their pitching, and will be getting a full season of Bichette, plus another year of development for Vlad, Biggio, and their young outfielders and catchers.  I don’t think they’re better than the Angels yet, but they could surprise.
Right now, I think the Angels have a shot at the Wild Card, but there are too many other teams of the same caliber or slightly better for me to really confidently predict them to land one.
What do you expect our competition to be?
