I really hope Teheran and Bundy just pitch out of their minds this year. That would be a cool thing to happen.

In terms of Ryu vs Keuchel, I'll also say this.  With Ohtani, Heaney, Bundy, Canning, Teheran now in the rotation, and with Suarez, Barria, Sandoval as #7-9, we should have enough depth to weather the season.  Most teams try to navigate the regular season with tons of depth, then rely on their more elite talent to get through the playoffs.
I recognize Keuchel is more likely to stay healthy and be decent, but Ryu's upside is much higher, and given that we should have enough SP depth to get through the season, I'd like to gamble on the higher upside SP who we could rely on, should we make the playoffs, along with Ohtani.  I'd have more confidence in a Ryu/Ohtani 1-2 punch in the playoffs than a Keuchel/Ohtani 1-2 punch, IMO.

Gray pitched 6.2 innings or more 9 times last season (Ray did it twice) and averaged almost exactly 6 innings per start if you remove that one game that he didn’t start and got just one out. I hope he’s Eppler’s #1 trade target.

Because he should come at an inexpensive acquisition price in comparison to others? Also if we acquire him we could extend him if we so desired? He's got heavy strikeout ability which is a plus.

They’re not gonna have much room to be choosy. Ray has some upside at least and strikeout stuff that Eppler likes.
Also by acquiring three SPs this winter, Angels ideally get a deeper, more rested pen with a lot more pitchers capable of going multiple innings.
5.2 IP is probably more than any Halo managed last year either.

No it doesn’t. That’s exactly what we did for years until the farm system was barren, payroll was maxed out, and the major league team had no talent. We literally just did all that with Dipoto and it has taken Eppler 5 years to rebuild this entire organization from the ground up when in reality it probably should have took 10.

have you been sleeping since 2009 or what?

I would have been pissed had that happened. You don’t trade top prospects for aging starters on the downslope.

I know I was completely opposed to this deal earlier, but one of the things that I really do love about Rendon is how quiet his swing is. Doesn't try to hit HR's. He's a professional hitter and much like Trout, his mannerisms don't change, between feast and famine.
    Truly lucky to have him.

Dude, its not done, i guarantee you that.  Ground ball pitchers like Kuechel suddenly look a lot better with that infield behind them.

Imagine the Angels down 2-1 in a game in the 8th where Ohtani reaches his pitch count and has to come off the mound, but he is scheduled to lead off the 9th.
How much would you love Maddon if he had the nuts to put Ohtani at 1B for one or two outs to keep him in the game to get that at bat?

so what's really the concern here?
are we trying to preserve what happens nine years from now?
If you think that needs to be the plan, then I've got nothing.  Because isn't that what we're talking about?  7/230 vs. 9/300 doesn't change anything over the next 7 years for either of those contracts.
It doesn't really matter.  One way or another, whatever Eppler does better fucking work over the next 7 years or so.  Sign Cole.  Sign Madbum.  Sign Ryu.  Trade for this slap dick prospect or trade for that noodle are SOB.
When are you playing for?  Not what.  Or who.  But when.  Which guy makes that the right choice?  Is it two guys or even three.
That's not for me to decide.  Or for anyone else to.  At some point you have to get it right and it's time for Billy to start getting it right.  I don't care whether we sign Cole at this point, but if you don't, you better do so other shit instead that will help this team win.
At some point it doesn't matter anymore about the who.  Just get it right.
