I haven't read through this whole thread, but why are we all the sudden trying to move Adell to 1B, a position at which the Angels already have a young player they're trying to develop?  Seems more like creating new problems than solving any existing ones.

I can’t speak for anyone else, but I am not “trying to move Adell to 1B.”  I think he is just fine in the OF.  I was simply commenting on the idea that it is unrealistic for players to change positions, especially when people are talking about a super athletic young guy and moving to THE one position that has often historically absorbed guys getting less athletic who struggle at other positions.

I personally want Adell in the OF every game and Schanuel at 1B every game.

Read it again. I never claimed you said that; just that you could have without invalidating your point. As for the list of players: yeah, that was me, again generally supporting your point of view without insulting anyone while doing so. Judging by your last sentence, it sounds like you’ll just look to insult certain posters regardless of the validity of their points. That wouldn’t make it easy or even worthwhile to engage with you.

I misread what you wrote.  I stand corrected.  No I am not looking to insult people.  But it happens.  I guess you can judge me and say I make my own bed.

You were making a reasonable point about a discussion on changing Adell’s position in the field. I wouldn’t want to try it just yet, but it’s not unreasonable. Then you are asked for examples of successful players who did it. Instead of doing that, or saying you can’t immediately think of any, you just cut and run, lobbing some personal insults as you flee the scene. I generally agree with your point, even threw out some names to support it. All without personally insulting the guy who disagreed with you. If you’ve got stuff to add to the topic? Cool. Ad hominems aren’t it.

No I’d never said I couldn’t think of any.  Never happened.  I have a long standing position of not doing google searches to satisfy somebody else’s interest in “finding proof.”  Plus, somebody else had already posted a long list of people changing positions.

And finally, Taylor is gonna get addressed a certain way sometimes because he has a demonstrated history of being a certain way.  Everybody makes their own bed.

I'm not sure if it's an AW thing or an every baseball fan thing, but it's cute how certain folks think you can simply move a player from one position to a completely different position.

You might check throughout baseball history for the, oh about one million times a player moves from one position to another.

It obviously depends on the player and the positions.

Talk about moving a catcher to short?  No.

Talk about moving a SS to third?  Yeah it’s happened plenty.

Talk about a CF moving to LF?  Yeah, realistic.

Talk about  SS going to CF?  Yeah, realistic.

Talk about a 1B going to center?  Probably not.

But you know where lots and lots of players move to if they change positions?  1B.  3B, 2B, C, and OF have regularly moved to 1B throughout baseball history, especially if they are less athletic than they used to be.

So if you want make fun of people suggesting maybe it’s possible for a young, highly athletic OF that is 6’3” to maybe move to 1B, be my guest, but you would be wrong.

Maybe Adell wouldn’t be able to do it.  But a discussion about considering it isn’t out of bounds at all, especially when you consider much of his trouble defensively has been jumps on balls and taking bad routes.

Notice nobody has suggested they throw catchers gear on him.  Yeah, changing positions can be a project but it’s not like player moving to first base is some crazy thing that never happens.  Going to 1B is probably the position change that happens the most, and plenty of immobile less athletic guys have been able to do it.

I disagree. I'm actually digging watching the Halos more this season than the past few years.

While the 90's sucked in the standings outside of '95, it was great to see Salmon, GA, Edmonds, Erstad, Glaus, Percy, etc. with some of the veterans like Chili Davis, Hudler, Finley, Abbott, Langston.

Seeing those younger guys get the time in and do well all led up to a core that ultimately saw them win a championship together.

I also am enjoying watching some young players.  But I am also simultaneously more impatient with losing than ever.

So it is enjoyable to have some interesting players to follow and yet more tortuous than ever at the same time because I just hate the losing.

I agree. Then they can definitely have enough information to decide on what to do with him.

I guess I am amused with the idea that Adell would even have to be good to get playing time on this roster.  You just play him.  And even if he hit .225 over the next 600 at bats this year you still play him every day next year too.  Let’s be honest.  This team has REGULARLY been pretty comfortable starting crappy players almost every day for a couple of years.  The Angels can pencil in a bunch of .200 hitters all over the diamond, but Adell has to mash to play?

  7. Given the lack of high quality prospects in the Angel farm system over the last few years, and given that the system’s ability to develop raw players has been questionable, and given that there is a clock on the Trout window. . .

It shouldn’t be much of a surprise that the team has drafted mature college players that look like they can reach the majors quickly.

These guys are going to take their lumps.  I don’t think there is anything wrong with Schanuel.  He was drafted and he is here now because he can control an at bat, get on base, and get some hits even as an unfinished product.

But he is an unfinished product.  This is what the team drafted and the process they chose for this guy.

If I am going to complain, it won’t be about what’s wrong with Schanuel.  It will be a complaint that the Angel farm system seemingly can’t draft raw players and actually develop them into high impact major leaguers, so they have to go after guys like Schanuel.
