Haren pitched over 200 innings 8 straight years and had an ERA+ of 126 over that period .  In 2011 in his first full season with the Angels he pitched 238 innings, had an ERA of 3.17 and a WHIP of 1.02.  Both Weaver and Santana also threw over 200 innings and the Angels had a top 5 staff.  From 2012 on he had injuries and wasn't the same pitcher.  There's no way to predict if/when a guy will break down and at the time the Angels wanted a guy they thought could be legitimate number 2 which is what they got for a season and a half.

I hope a good number of people care about an actual solution because there's been an uptick in the number of homeless across LA/OC the last so many years, in OC we've seen it spread into the suburbs and it's not going to fix itself.  It's a tricky situation because no one wants a solution in their community and while studies show it can save the county money in the long run it's a tough pill to swallow when cities are financially strapped, pension costs are through the roof and taxes only go up.  One issue in regards to to the homeless is that some of them don't want help and they just want to be left alone but they end up in places where they really shouldn't be.  You can't force someone to get help and if they don't follow the rules (do drugs, don't take medications, etc) they won't get help from some non-profits.
Any permanent solution needs to come with rules like no drugs, your residence is subject to someone inspecting/monitoring it to make sure it isn't destroyed and you have to work towards transitioning out.  In the case of mental health issues not everyone can transition out and that's fine but human nature tells us that if you just give something to people with no strings some are going to take advantage.  I've been told stories where families lived in transitional housing and the one of the parents couldn't kick their habit so they had to go and then the rest of the family goes with them back onto the streets even though they have the option to stay.  There's a fine line between helping and enabling and I don't think this is something the cities or county alone can take on as they need outside support from people and organizations who know the solution isn't just to build permanent housing.

More power to you, honestly.  We haven't started a family yet but plan to and I simply don't want to see homeless people wandering by the schools, parks or through the neighborhood.  The bus stop a few blocks from our place had someone who set up camp off and on for a few days who had a shopping cart and she left a ton of trash to the point no one would sit on the bench.  Not sure if she had anything to do with it (could have been a kid) but someone apparently lit a fire in the trash can, it melted it to the ground and the city ended up having to replace the entire bus stop.  There's another guy who keeps to himself that sleeps a few blocks away and walks up and down the streets all day.  On a walk a week or two ago I saw him peeing into the channel right off a major street before he took off for the day.  Down near main street the city has to come clean up the needles in the morning in an area where people gather late into the night and they've had an uptick in car break ins.
The county screwed the pooch big time and they really didn't make it any better when they moved people out of the riverbed.  Some of the people they gave the hotel vouchers to stayed a few nights at most and took off because I assume they prefer to be on the street.  The groups and foundations that have housing they help transition people into have their own services that include watching the properties, making sure people take their meds, get health services when they need it, don't do drugs, follow the rules and so on.  These groups aim to get people back on their feet so it's a process that has to be closely monitored.  The county only wanted the use of the properties and said they'd provide the other services.  As you can imagine these outside groups wouldn't go for that because it's their properties, liability and reputation on the line.
As far as making it other cities problems that's what they're doing trying to move the people who were previously at the riverbed to other cities.  It's a county problem but you can't expect any other city to take them on when the county has no long term plan currently in place.

Over the last 10 years Napoli made over 80M and won a WS so I'll still give him the edge.  That said both players have had long MLB careers taking advantage of their strengths so kudos to them.  If Mathis could have hit like Napoli or Napoli could have played defense like Mathis while staying away from Goat Hill the Angels would have been set at C for the last decade.

So they removed the blaster from the poster to appease some but they will have no issue making money off a movie where the blaster, guns and so on are a big part of it.  Proving it's all about the money and if that isn't hypocrisy I don't know what is.  If you're going to push a movie/product/widget at least own it.

I"m guessing part of the reason they're voting for it is to avoid a third shutdown this year and the same could be said about some of the R's.  With the elections coming up later this year all the dems have to really do is not anything really stupid and they should come out ahead.

We would still like to make the move from our town house to a SFH but we've held off because the market is so thin and we're at a point now where I think it's just overpriced.  Overpriced is nothing new but I just don't see how current prices are sustainable given people aren't getting raises at the same rate. If it wasn't for family I'd be pushing to make a serious move out of state.  The weather only goes so far when housing is overpriced, crime is up including violent crimes, taxes aren't going to go down, sanctuary cities, elected officials taking about a sanctuary state while thumbing their noses at the feds and the list goes on.

People who think PED use is uncommon in sports have their head in the sand. I would say this is common practice among most athletes in modern sports. There is too much money not to. The only people who are getting caught don’t seem very bright. Burfict is a perfect example.

There are far more efficient ways but when the feds don't enforce the laws for decades then they finally start to and some cities won't cooperate (see sanctuary cities, Oakland mayor, etc) those efficiencies disappear.  I think an actual wall is a joke but enforcing the laws and securing the border aren't.  I'd settle for the authorities coming down hard on anyone who employs illegals, making the path to citizenship easier and a realistic quota as far as how many people can become citizens each year.  Unfortunately that appears to be a pipe dream given what we've seen out of both sides the last so many years.

Is Republicans getting wiped out the fault of the Democrats?  No I think it's just how the state has been trending for decades now as left leaning policies, taxation and so on have chased out tax paying citizens and businesses.  I'm betting 75% or more of the registered voters who left the state in the last 2-3 decades were Republicans.  The people that I know that left the state mostly were.

Richards has pitched more than 200 innings in a season only once in his career.  The knee injury in 2014 covering 1B was a freak injury but unless it's a team friendly deal I wouldn't want the Angels to extend him just yet.  In a contract year if he stays healthy and pitches like an ace or close to it he's in line to get paid.  That may price him out of being an Angel in 2019 but I think that's a risk you take as opposed to extending him and facing the possibility of him battling injuries the rest of his contract.

Are there enough voters to go in a different direction?  Any time there's a presidential election they can call CA at about noon local time while states back east are nowhere near ready to be called.  Right now we've got a governor who said "people can afford it" when they raised gas taxes (CA citizens already saw one of the smallest return on their gas taxes, i.e. crap roads and high taxes), we've got an AG who is threatening businesses for following federal laws and a state that has no problem talking a big game opposing the feds but they still aren't above holding their hands out for federal funds.  California ranks in the back of the pack among states when it comes to public education and while there's plenty of schools in CA that perform well for many of those that don't it's not a matter of money it's what kids aren't getting at home and there's nothing we can do to fix that.  Barring something big happening we'll continue to see an exodus of income tax paying citizens and businesses from the state.  The middle class will continue to get pinched, taxpayers will see a smaller return on what they pay while education and other essential services will suffer.  Then when they can't raise enough taxes off the top earners (see 2012, 2016) and bond sales won't address their deficits they'll be all out of tricks.

I've been watching some of the Overwatch League matches too and actually found those more enjoyable than playing in Season 8 (I think that's the one that just ended or is about to).  I know one of the kids who played for USA in the Overwatch WC signed a 150K contract and also read that guys in the league make a minimum of 50K plus benefits.  Funny thing is that kid is on one of the Overwatch League teams and I noticed whenever his team played he wasn't playing and supposedly it's because he isn't 18 yet and that's one of the league requirements.  I don't think I'll ever stop tripping over how far esports have come since anything close to this was a pipe dream when I was playing online in the late 90's.
Also your comic is spot on.  Any time I play Overwatch I always wonder how well I would have played if it came out when I was in my teens.  I don't have the drive or desire to play as often as it takes to get into the top ranks and I know even if I did I'd get smoked.

He's in his 30's and I think his problems have somewhat always been there.  He's not on anything now but in our early 20's we partied regularly, after a while it kind of got away from him and his parents confronted him.  He did a complete 180, had a good job, was out on his own, didn't even drink and became extremely religious and regimented.  That end of the spectrum was definitely better but I think he needed to find some kind of middle ground where things weren't so hardcore one way.  He kind of retreated into his own world, lost his job because he was difficult to deal with, ran up debt and so on then rather than trying to get help he just embraced it while his mom supporting him allowed it to get worse.  Like you I really don't know exactly how the background checks work and whether or not he could get a gun but someone who doesn't have a record or hasn't been institutionalized that has issues like him being able to buy a gun is a problem.  As you said though that's a hard situation to protect against unless gun laws changed dramatically.  To be honest with you my fear is that he is a danger to not only himself but also his mom.  I really hope I'm wrong.
