Erstad Grit reacted to Dave Saltzer in The Official 2024 Draft Thread
Please post anything and send everything related to the 2024 amateur draft in here. Anything from mock draft picks for the Angels and scouting reports to draft strategies and signing bonuses.
Personally, with our first oick, we can draft JJ Wetherholt to be a lefthanded 2B to go with our young core. I think he could zip through our system, ev n with the time he's missed with a hamstring issue (hell, the fact that he's had a hamstring issue already makes him fit in with us already! Just kidding).
Here's a profile on JJ:
https://www.mlb.com/prospects/draft/jj-wetherholt-802139
My strategy for the draft would be to focus on a finished college hitter with our first pick and then with our supplemental picks and in the second and third rounds, go after some high school players.
This draft is considered to be generally weak, especially with college pitching and high school players in general. However, there are some good finds there, and with a few players moving up the boards a bit, I think that a polished college bat should be available to us. At worst, one of the better college arms should be available for us to take.
After getting a more polished college player with our first pick with our supplemental picks and 2nd and 3rd round, I'd go after HS players to add a new layer of development for us.
One player that I'm keeping an eye on is Slade Caldwell for our Shohei pick. He's a bit undersized, so he could fall to us in a supplemental round.
Here's a profile on him.

Erstad Grit reacted to Ochocinco! in Gameday Thread (4/15/24 3:50pm Pacific): Angels @ Rays: Sandoval on the mound, Schanuel is back
Send Schanuel down, have Thaiss play 1B and call Wallach up to be backup catcher?
I want Schanuel to get his ABs but I can’t stand Thaiss behind the plate but I think last year showed he can be a serviceable bat (his bat started to slow down when he was being asked to also catch every single day). Wonder if taking catching duties away from him lets him focus more on hitting and we see those numbers increase. It’s clear the staff wants to work Ohoppe like a dog behind the plate so why not find a way to get Thaiss and his bat in there more often. Can’t be any worse than what Schanuel is showing rn as much as I love his patience at the plate

With Sano hitting the way he his schanuel needs to go dude offers nothing right now. My 14 year old son can hit the ball further than schanuel can

Any day the Halos win is a good day!
Nice day for Rendon, Trout and Ward!
Let's start winning again boys!
Light it!

It most assuredly will affect his PT. Wash is about as old school as they come. He expects grown men and professionals to be aware and know their fundamentals. He was already po'd by his last second-base blunder.

BTW if you guys have MLB.TV or can listen to the Rays TV feed I'd suggest giving it a shot.
The 2 guys they have are some of my favorite commentators.

Erstad Grit reacted to Stradling in Stephenson?
Except they didn’t sign him fairly quickly. They signed him in January about three weeks before spring training started.

Erstad Grit reacted to Ochocinco! in Stephenson?
This signing will forever baffle me. That $11 mill could have been used in so many different ways. Im assuming he’ll need TJ and won’t pitch for another year +… so we’ll still have what another 1.5 years left of control when he comes back? For a 11mill a year reliever with only a 4 month good track record. Yikes

Something something Blake Snell only goes 5

Erstad Grit got a reaction from HeavenlyHalos in OC Register: Alexander: For a rebuilding Angels team, it’s all about hope
Then why is Hicks playing instead of JA?

Erstad Grit reacted to bloodbrother in Gameday Thread (4/10/24 1pm): Rays @ Angels: Soriano on the mound, Rengifo, Adell in, no Rendon, Schanuel
All in all I thought Soriano looked solid for the most part. Stuff looks good and he was getting swing and misses. That 1st inning was just weird.

Not a good start for himb

A back up catcher should be a good defensive player. Wasn't Wallach supposed to have been like that? Suzuki at his age was past his prime. They really need a better option. O'Hoppe will need rest and catching is hard on the body.

Well this blows. Thais is not a catcher.

Erstad Grit got a reaction from Angel Oracle in OC Register: Angels lose to Rays on sloppy night for Patrick Sandoval
Sandy is a good SP. Almost any team would love him as their 4 or 5. Problem is he's our 1.

I feel like Sandy is hesitant of the batters making contact, so he pitches around the strike zone, and his arm is usually inconsistent accuracy-wise, and it gets him in trouble.
So he falls behind in the count.
Then when he HAS to throw a strike, the batters are waiting for it.
The lead off walks to start the inning really have to stop, especially the inning after we get a lead.
If he gives up a base hit, that's fine with me, and it's a lot different, because at least they had to earn it. But more often than not the batters will get themselves out, so he has to learn to let them.

Not me I said TA would have a nice bounce back year........but I'm hoping Rendon is about to make me look dumb.

Erstad Grit got a reaction from BTH in CJ Cron part 3?
He's just sitting there.
I'd rather sign Cron and cut Hicks. Let JA play more and Sano become regular DH. Cron is a better back-up option at 1B than what we have.
