halobob reacted to eaterfan in Kendrys really blew it
Kendry's signed as a FA out of Cuba. He was a union member when the collective bargaining agreement was voted on. He was offered a one year $14 million contract. He has maybe the best agent of all time representing him and informing him of the risks and rewards of accepting and declining that contract. I don't feel bad for the guy. He had every chance to make good decisions and didn't make it. He also had every opportunity to play better last season so teams would sign him regardless of losing a pick.
Is the system 100% fair (in that he will maximize his $ received on this contract? Maybe not. But it's far less fair to guys who are drafted out of high school and have much smaller first contracts, no choice in where they play, and weren't voting members in the Union when the CBA was voted on. Guys on their rookie contracts are far worse off than Kendrys and it's only going to get worse. Mike Trout could have held out for a higher signing bonus. With the new system those guys can't even really do that. The system was voted on and approved by the players. I feel no sympathy for them.
Not only that, but if Kendrys accepted his $14 million dollar contract and played well and did that 3 years in a row that is probably more than he would have been offered in a contract. He has the opportunity to earn more money than he would have.

You can feel bad for him for any reason. I will feel bad for him if something truly bad happens...jumping on homeplate and getting a serious injury for example. But feeling bad for him because he may make a few million less this year because his agent told him he could get more than the qualifying offer seems silly to me.

halobob got a reaction from Tank in When are they finally going to move the Florida Panthers ?
I think the NHL should contract Columbus and Florida and move Phoenix to Seattle. 7 teams per division, 14 per conference, gets rid of 3 shitty markets and adds an awesome sports city.

You are talking low income and I am talking middle class. You guys are just as big of lackeys to big corporate america as the idiotic republicans are. Both favor immigration (cheap labor), both bend over to big pharm, both cow tow to special interests and the middle class is left holding the bag. That is why the gap between rich and poor keeps getting wider and wider, because you two groups of peeps are eliminating the middle altogether.
all of your fees, taxes, liscenses and regulations. Who do you think those hurt? The rich? The corporations? Nope, the middle class and to a lesser extent the lower class.
Brilliant.

He's right.
You're trying to pigeon hole him to mean only these people on strike while asserting your point with the small percentage of people that face enormous difficulties.
His point is this is the United States of America. Everyone in this country (within general confines) has the ability to wake up every day and do IR be what they want. This country is founded up the idea that any man can achieve success and a wonderful life....it's why there are so many great and inspirational stories from all walks of life that made it through the worst of conditions. It's also why people eagerly migrate here even knowing the struggles initially simply to have the opportunity to be successful or live a prosperous life.
I also don't feel sorry for people that have a choice everyday but squander or make bad choices for themselves.
I know a lot of people that first worked McDonalds or some fast food spot that went on to do good things, I'm not belittling them or their work.
Adam's point and mine are that these people have the opportunity, no matter how difficult, to succeed. While these people are feeling entitled and wasting their days for an easier income, there is some dude in some third world country that probably can't afford to feed his family today and would kill for their jobs and opportunity.

I was just reading with interest everyones comments. I know the McD workers are grateful for any kind of job in our little town. If they advertised any opening you'd have hundred line up to apply.
This sounds weird but I have a guy in my warehouse making $10.00 an hour putting together chairs and tables. He was making around $80,000. as a manager two years ago in one of our factories that closed. He's a great guy and a heck of a worker. At his age in our town there is no way he will ever get a good job again. The jobs just aren't here anymore. Some people simply have to move to where the jobs are. He was just desperate to have any work at all. I told him when he started it wasn't much of a job and he wouldn't like it but he does. I have to run him off to close.

I never felt like a low life third rate citizen working at a McDonalds through high school and part of college. It was honest work that had it's pay scale and when I felt it could no longer support my needs, even though I had risen to manager, I moved on to a better paying job. But it was just a job and not a career. Even store managers made lower middle class salaries, which for some people was enough.
This is entry level service work and shouldn't warrant any wage better than minimum to start. As mentioned before, rise above if you want to be paid better but don't demand to be paid better than your work is truly worth.

That, or they (the decent folks, mind you) have a sense of personal responsibility, and know that with hard work comes reward. Sorry, but burger flipping isn't hard work, nor should it be a career

Working at a fast food restaurant should be a job, not a career. Part of the journey, not the destination. That is what is wrong with these strikers. They are content with just being a fast food worker because they presumably have no other skills. Sorry
