Here’s the thing though.   Would you pay $36 million/year for a pitcher with only 1 1/3 great seasons?

You need to take off your rose colored Angel fan glasses and come back to reality.  It's ok if the Angels have question marks.  You don't have to protect them like it's your little son/daughter.  Just like our CF is the best in all of MLB while some other teams have question marks/issues.  We are awesome at some positions (CF, 3B) and we have questions at others.  That's why we have not had a winning record since 2015 (five years!).  For SP -- it's an issue for us.  Deal with it.  
Padres: i'm talking 2021.  Clev/Lamet do not matter to them in 2021.  If you think Snell/Darvish/Musgrove/Paddack/etc. is equivalent to the angels on any level than you are kidding yourself.  They do not have question marks / injury concerns. 
LAD: who cares about Kershaw and the others.  Those guys can all sit for 2021 and the LAD will have no problems SP wise.  Again, you are comparing apples to Oranges.   Also, putting May in there makes no sense.  Sure he has yet to pitch 30+ start in the Majors, but that's not due to injuries or lack of talent.  

Well Weaver would definitely light a fire under their asses but he would probably be too intense of a coach for Maddon’s laid back atmosphere.

Deferred money means it is most certainly not $5 million they are paying this year. If it's 3-1-1, 2-2-1, or even more spread out than that, there is really no reason for Perry to do it unless they are going to spend more money. Why do we suddenly think Arte gave Perry $10 and told him to buy dinner for the family? More and more we can see this was a shrewd move. I hated it at $15 million. I thought it was stupid at $6-7 million. At $5, I thought it was a decent move. At $5 deferred? It's really smart. A pitcher like Cobb is as good as any of the $3-5 million FAs out there. This was a depth move while he tries to get more. As for Jones...
Yes, he was once a Top-100 prospect. So was Barreto. Yes he's a top 10 prospect. But his arrow isn't pointing up. We did well to find a team that liked him and get something out of it. But he's blocked. He has little value to Angels long-term.
Does he play in the OF? Marsh, Adell, Trout, and Adams are all ahead of him. 
2nd? Fletcher, Rengifo, Barreto are blocking him now with several young SS prospects likely moving to 2B long term. 
He's also not a true utility guy--he can't play SS, 3B, or 1st. 
Also, Perry just came from another front office. He knows the value of every other teams Top 10 prospects. Bringing in guys from 4-5 different teams only confirms this. If none of them valued Jones, they know his trade value is low. It's a really small loss for the right to SP $3 million this year that solidifies the back of the rotation. 
FINALLY...are we all forgetting that the Angels' problem the last 3 years has been the bottom of their rotation and the bullpen? If you take out Teheran and Suarez last year, the Angels rotation was above average. If you take out Cahill/Harvey 2 years ago, their rotation was at least average. Solidifying form the bottom up isn't sexy obviously, but it is how you begin to build consistency and give yourself the chance to win more games. 

I bet the deferred money for Cobb is at least 2mil.  Which means they got a SP for about 3m in 2021 money.  
just a little math here.  
If the Angels trade Heaney and sign Bauer for about 28m AAV, they'll likely be about 1m below the luxury tax.  
or more likely, They could include Heaney in a trade to acquire whoever that costs more than Heaney, it keeps the Halos below Arte's budget.  
or they got a meh yet serviceable arm for almost free.  
(mind you if Jones becomes a solid major league player, this place will lose it's shit.)
Frankly, it's still a dumb move unless there are other moves.

At 5 million only being paid (with some of it being deferred) I think there is still room to get Bauer. Or at the very least someone like Paxton and then trade from someone like Jon Gray.

I love seeing character development!

The more I think about it, the more I have to believe that the Angels are taking advantage of that deferred money somehow.  I really want to believe Minasian would make a savvy move like that.  
I've been critical of the idea that Minasian would trade someone like Heaney but maybe that is the path to getting a guy like Bauer.  
Could it be that Perry has a string of moves lined up?  Maybe.  
I hope so.

Oof. I’ve been obsessed with the Angels/baseball my whole life, but for the past 3-4 years I’ve lost a whole lot of interest in it and this offseason puts the nail in the coffin. I have zero desire to watch and support this team. Welp, at least I have my Lakers. Oh and FREE TROUT
