I have just learned of the passing of Pete Van Wieren, a member of the Atlanta Braves broadcast team for 33 years. Van Wieren, who was affectionately known as "The Professor" for his seemingly endless knowledge of baseball facts and figures, lost his battle to cancer at age 69. Van Wieren retired in 2008, shortly after the death of his longtime broadcast partner Skip Caray.
 
Anyone who spent any amount of time in the south, or the millions across the country who followed the Braves on TBS before the current round of baseball broadcast contracts, knew Van Wieren's smooth, easy delivery as he educated you about the game and its players without talking down to you. Never one to call attention to himself, Van Wieren had the demeanor of a wise old uncle who you always went to for the answers. Baseball is poorer for his loss.

it looks like Hank Conger went to the game with Hank Conger. I guess as a switch hitter you can be sitting and standing in the same picture.

Jose was great at theAW media round table in ST. He was engaging, funny and very nice. He mentioned that he could speak with or without the accent which he proceeded to do. Later on during picture taking and glad handing he was so very nice to my beautiful wife. When I mentioned that I thought he was going to do an Alabama accent whe he mentioned accents earlier. Damned if he didn't break out a "y'all" for me. He treats the fans the right way and I will never utter another mean aimed at him ever again.

So far Cowgill is holding his own. He got robbed twice I yesterday's game. Both cost us runs as it turned out. Defensively he has made a few major league plays.

(((((((Stradling)))))) It is events like this that remind me what a blessed man I am. My son Alan was 21 when he was killed in a similar senseless accident. I feel for his family. Their life was forever changed that day. I can't begin to describe the pain and anger we felt towards life itself after Alan's accident. The one constant I had during this time was my next door neighbor. Stradling lived next door at the time and helped me more than he will ever know. Yes he is my brother. Yes he was my neighbor. Yes he is who I wanna be if I ever choose to grow up. Love you scott.
Nick Adenhart had a chance to be one of the really good ones. His last game showed us that. The way he was taken from his family and all of us was tragic. If I could recommend one way to honor his memory it would be to always let people know how much love you have for them. I don't want to sound preachy or assholier than thou but Nick's passing shows that nothing is promised. Have no regrets and leave nothing unsaid. Baseball, after all, is just a game. A game kissed by the face of God, but still just a game. I will continue to keep good thoughts for Nicks family. The Angel family. And our Angelswin family. I love you all. Some more than others but love just the same.
