Hell yeah SoCal bird! Nice to hear what you think of baseball in Orange County, CA!

Honestly, we love our team and you probably see how critical we get on AngelsWin when we're not performing as well as we all think the Angels should. I think its because we one day hope to have a team with as much class and respectability, backed by performance, as your Cardinals have in each and every game for the past century. Also, we love our Mike Trout! It's only too bad this team isn't performing well enough to highlight his 110% on the field to the rest of the league. To go with your AL remark, I can honestly say the Cardinals are probably my favorite NL team, and I have no problem rooting for them if they're in contention during the playoffs. I have family/friends in Georgia who moved from here, they go to 1/4 of the home games, and they are some of the nicest people I know.

Nice to hear you enjoyed the park. Have yet to visit Busch, but it's on the list! I too love Angel Stadium. It has aged, but it is the original at the core.

Glad to hear we might've won over a fan tonight! I like to think we have some of the classier fans in the surrounding area (avoid Chavez ravine like the plague!)!

Yes, all cops should be Batman.

I love all these guys on the message board, calling cops pussies and f*gs.  They'd be able to take care of suspects, whatever other SWAT issues are going on in the neighborhood, AND be able to juggle a stun gun, pepper spray and a gun, switching from one to another in milliseconds.

Then I see them on the Angelswin softball field.  Most can't play a hour's softball game without tearing something, or resting for the rest of the day.

But in the heat of the battle in Hawthorne, boy they'd know EXACTLY what to do.

I am watching the video.  The two guys are holding the suspect.  The cops are in a shiathole semi war zone, with other more pressing issues going on as well.

The dog sprints over and the 3rd cop, in a half second, pulls out his gun.  I know, nate, you are superhuman, and in that split second, you could have determined a better course of action.  The cop's first thought was self preservation.  Not everyone can have the instincts and 20/20 hindsight of you, nate, to decide that, despite a rottweiler sprinting over, you'd pull out the stun gun and subdue the animal gracefully.

Looks like it was some sort of swat stand off. (Swat Bearcat on the street). So random guy not following orders to stay back can be detained legally. The search and cuffing is justified. As far as the dog, we all know he was trying to protect his owner, but how many dog bites to a cop (or any person for that matter) do you want to see before self defense is used? That officer did everything he could but if a dog that size attacks someone deadly force will always be justified.

It's a sad situation but this was not a trigger happy cop killing some innocent puppy.

LBHalos17 got a reaction from ELEVEN in Why I love baseball
I just watched it, so I'll quote one of my favorite baseball-movie-characters from "A League of their Own."

"Baseball gets inside you; it's what lights you up."-Jimmy Dugan Manager Rockford Peaches
"It just got too hard."-Dottie Henson Catcher

"It's supposed to be hard.  If it wasn't hard, everybody would do it.  It's the hard, that makes it great."-Jimmy

There are many other great quotes from movies and books (especially "Field of Dreams"), But watching "League" got me thinking...  All of us baseball fanatics are romantics at heart.  I also love to remember the past (I was a history major) as baseball does.  But, for me, it's much simpler...

I love playing the game.  The smell of the grass, the colors of the grass and infield dirt, the sounds of the game off the bat or in the glove and out of the mouths of players.  I love it when I get to play 1st base and shoot the shit with opposing players who reach base.  I love base-coaching and trying to think-ahead of the game, but I also like to manage the scorebook.  I love the feel of a liner smacking into my glove on a horizontal-diving catch.  I love the feeling of my spikes digging into the dirt on the way to 3rd from 1st.   I love the feeling of smashing the ball off the sweet-spot of the bat and knowing you got it all.  I even love all the different pains I wake-up with the day after a good game.

I love watching the game.  The smells of a ballpark; barbeque smoke cooking hot dogs, etc.  The sounds of a Major League park.  The constant hum of voices rising to cheers if the Halos happen to do something good.  The crack of a Major League bomb off the bat of Josh or Albert or Mike and even opposing players.  I could sit through a triple-header in the sun as long as I had a couple dogs and beers, and my nasty chew (an empty row in front never hurt to put my aching legs up either).

I love watching Little Leaguers play the game!  The emotions runs so high and low; it reminds me to always respect the game, its history, and my teammates by always playing the right way.

These two goalies are crushing-it.  Both teams should realize by now that they may want to park two skaters in front of the nets.

If they keep going into OT, there's gonna be a few call-ups too.  The four-round playoff in hockey is THE test of manhood.

Fullerton will be hosting UCLA this weekend.  My buddy TJ is the 3rd base coach for the Bruins, and I'll be rooting for them (He's an ex-Long Beach State guy too, so it's fairly easy to root against Fullerton).  Either way, I'll root for this winner in Omaha though.  I wish the Supers would be less-regional so that both So-Cal teams had a chance to advance.  At least the Oregons don't have to face each other.

Oregon St. will host Kansas St. and I think they will win the series.  K St. had to rally to get past Arkansas, while the (Nice) Beavers rolled through their regional scoring a ton of runs.  The Ducks (not Anaheim) have to rebound tonight from a 1-0 loss to Rice in the final to advance.  Win, and they host NC St. I believe.

The West Coast has four very good teams still in it.  I'm annoyed that the NCAA forces Fullerton and UCLA to beat each other up, and knock it down to three chances for Left-Coast baseball.

This illegal-theft-of-water/University Services is just another example of their insanity.  We used to wash our cars at the dorms at LB St. all the time; maybe that's why I never made it to the water polo Major Leagues.

He's a hard-hitter, and sometimes a head-hunter.  This hit looked like it was 50-50 shoulder and head.  I think it's only worth a couple of games, but he is a problem-child with a history of head-hunting.  I always say the suspension should match the number of lost-games of the guy who got hit, if he was injured.

It always makes me laugh when players and coaches say they weren't trying to hurt the guy with a hit.  Granted, most checks are just to take a guy out of the play and force a turnover, but there are some runs that definitely aim to send guys to the dressing room.

LBHalos17 reacted to AZMike in WPA?
WAR is more comprehensive in the kinds of things it keeps score of (includes fielding, and baserunning -- WPA only considers hitting and base stealing). The goal there is WAR tries to distill down how skilled a player is independent of context. It's intended to be "predictive" of future performance. If you were going to trade for a player in Fantasy WAR is likely more useful stat to start from.

WPA on the other hand is a descriptive stat. A better account of what actually happened in the game. If you were going to ask "which player is most valuable for their particular team?" WPA is a more useful stat than WAR to start from. Note that unlike WAR, if you add up the WPA of all the players it will actually add up to a team's actual win/loss record. So using the term "WINS" is actually appropriate. I think fewer people would have a problem with the term WAR if they simly called it "VAR" for Value above replacement, without mentioning wins.

How WPA works is it takes the probabiltiy of your team winning the game based on the situation. Let's say runners at 1st and 3rd, down 1 run in the bottom of the 9th with 1 out. Let's say this is a 35% probability of a win for the home team. Now Howie Kendrick grounds into a double play. Game over. Win probability is zero. Kendrick is charged with -0.35 wins in his WPA.

That said the Article is wrong in claiming Trout and Kendrick have bad WPA. Here's the WPA for the Angels:

    http://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=all&stats=bat&lg=all&qual=0&type=3&season=2013&month=0&season1=2013&ind=0&team=1&rost=0&age=0&filter=&players=0

Trout has the most (1 win) Hamilton the least (-1.1 wins).

Here is the list for the whole American league:

    http://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=all&stats=bat&lg=al&qual=0&type=3&season=2013&month=0&season1=2013&ind=0&team=0&rost=0&age=0&filter=&players=0&sort=3,a

Josh Donaldson leads overall (2.8 wins). Jeff Keppinger is the lowest (-1.87)

Another interesting stat is WPA/LI. LI is leverage index and this is actually an attempt to weight home runs, hits etc. equally regardless of game situation (more like WAR).

Resolving Hamilton in my mind would be dropping him even further down in the line up and hope everyone else is producing. If everyone is producing then maybe he can go back to being himself. I don't know what its like to feel the pressure to perform these guys must feel but man he needs to step up sooner rather than later.

"Howie sucks!"  "Scoscia and Dipoto suck!"  "Hamilton sucks!"  "Pujols is hurt, too old, and sucks!"  "Trout is too fat to improve on his historic rookie season!"  etc.

Some of it may be true, and it really sucks to lose a series to Houston... but I will still watch and root for them, as I see some guys still showing some fire and trying to get it done (Hopefully, the Kings will make a repeat-run so I don't have to watch every minute of the Angels games).
