Quinlanforthewin got a reaction from stormngt in Breaking: Alex Cobb TRADED to Angels for Jahmai Jones
If that's the case, sign me up. But I've seen these types of theories for tons of our subpar signings the last few years and they usually just end up being a subpar signing.

We're becoming WAY to optimistic about these pitchers the Angels always get.
Over the last few years it's been Lincecum, Harvey, Cahill, Teheran and Bundy. Only ONE of those guys has panned out.
We need to stop fooling ourselves into thinking guys like Cobb and others are what we need. It hasn't been in the past and it isn't for the future.

Chuck...you had hair when Cobb last had under a 3 era. Cmon man. He's not good, there's no defending giving up our #7 prospect to pay a #6 starter 7.5 million.

Replace Andreise with Canning and you're onto something

Quinlanforthewin got a reaction from tomsred in Angels sign Jason Castro (1 year, $6.85M)
Not bad,. Kind of makes me think they're basically done and we're looking at an 80-85 win team yet again.

At least they added some depth at catcher considering current options. Now hoping for another starter pitcher.

Well, there goes my master plan but at least the lineup is complete. 🙂

That helps. Still one good starter away from being a legit postseason contender, though.

Quinlanforthewin reacted to Chuck in This might be unpopular but I think overall Eppler has done well
I agree, but I'd also like to add that he and his staff really made some questionable draft moves the past two years. Jordyn Adams could prove me wrong, but there was a ton of pitchers available that were near ready in the 2018 draft and he went after Adams and Jackson with his first two picks.
This past draft really confused me with the Wilson pick and it gets worse when he had to trade the pick away just to fix a mistake of his in Cozart.
But what really bums me out is that there were arms available that were highly rated that he didn't draft ahead of Wilson. Guys like Rutledge, Priester, Kirby and Thompson would have been a much better selection. I even liked Greg Jones, Cobin Carroll, Michael Toglia and Kody Hoese much better than Wilson.
If Eppler is able to make a trade for a good controllable arm or sign a few guys like Wood/Walker, I think he gets a B- overall. If he's unable to or land a decent C via FA or a trade, I think he's sitting at a C- overall.
When you don't make the playoffs and you've failed to build a good starting pitching staff I can't see giving him a better grade to date.

lol at people getting upset over trading Wilson.

Lou, the fact that we shouldn't be upset about trading Wilson is the problem.
He was our first round pick this past year and his overall value should be significantly more than the approximate $9M we traded him for ($12M minus what they already had given him as a signing bonus).
My frustrations on Wilson come more from the fact they drafted him to begin with then the fact they traded him.
I will have to reserve judgment on the money aspect until the offseason is complete. As it stands, they aren't much higher then their "real" payroll has been set at the last few years. So on the surface it makes it look like the Cozart/Wilson trade was made specifically to stay within reason of the same budget they have had the last few seasons (same one they've said they were willing to overshoot this offseason).
At this point the only way to improve the rotation is through trade which inevitably hurts the farm. They also need to improve at catcher. So if they already traded away this year's first rounder, then have to trade away for an arm, and again for a catcher, what does that do to our farm?

Quinlanforthewin reacted to Erstad Grit in Angels sign Julio Teheran (1 year, $9 million)
Oh God
Ohtani (whom I loooooove) who hasn't pitched in a long while and will be on a innings limitation is not a 2
Bundy is not a 3
Keuchel, even if we get him, is not a 1

Quinlanforthewin got a reaction from case in Plan B: What do you think the best option for the Angels is now?
I'm absolutely terrified that Eppler has a ton of money still without an obvious target now that Cole and Strasburg are gone. He's pretty clearly proven he's not good at identifying talent in free agency when he needs multiple pieces.

Quinlanforthewin got a reaction from Stradling in Eppler to speak with media
Wade Miley and Gio Gonzalez signed one year contracts...hell even the Alvarez for Garcia trade was awful as a lot of us predicted at the time. He's clueless. Keep defending him though and enjoying 4th place.

I mean he did pick Harvey Cahill Stratton and Allen this past offseason to shore up the rotation and closer role so clearly you can be confident he knows what he's doing
