I'm very glad to have Skaggs back. If he can get his velocity up, he could be a real prize.

Santiago I'm a bit leery of. Santana would be great but he looks like he has Daniel Cabrera potential. On the other hand, if the Angels sign Garza or another starter then he could end up back in the pen and be a nice flamethrower there.

I've been very critical of Jerry's trades in the past, but this is a very good, even excellent, trade.

Order of desirability for Arizona starters:

    Corbin
    Delgado
    Miley
    Skaggs
    Cahill
    Kennedy
    McCarthy

Order of most likely to end up being traded for Trumbo:

    McCarthy
    Kennedy
    Cahill
    Skaggs
    Miley
    Delgado
    Corbin

Welcome to the Angels, Brandon McCarthy or Ian Kennedy.

Seriously, though, for me the tipping point is between Cahill and Skaggs. I'd do Trumbo for Skaggs straight up, but Cahill reminds me too much of a Feldman/Vargas/Saunders type.

Agreed, Jason. I think Miley for Trumbo and a marginal (Stamets?) to solid (Yarbrough?) prospect is most likely.

I wonder if the Its Not Our Money Crowd get it now.

Anyhow, it sounds like Dipoto plans to sign a cheap free agent #4-5 type, and then hope to hell that he can trade Kendrick or Trumbo for a decent #3.

I feel reasonably optimistic about Garrett Richards, but I don't feel good about the game plan being assuming that he's going to be a #3 next year and/or they can pull off a trade. If Dipoto doesn't pull off a trade AND Garrett bombs, this rotation will be awful.

You over-estimate Trumbo's value. They might get a #3 starter, but the Angels would probably be the team sending a prospect along with Trumbo, not the other way around.

    I see Trumbo's value as:

Trumbo + good prospect = #3 starter 30 or younger
Trumbo = older/expensive #3 starter, or younger borderline #3-4 starter with some upside
    Trumbo = #4 starter + marginal prospect
Trumbo = very good but not elite prospect

Good article, Robert. I'm quietly hoping that Garret performs like a #3 in 2014, with an ERA in the 3.50-4.00 range and 180+ innings. I think his upside is something like a #2 ala John Lackey in a good year or CJ Wilson. He's going to be 26 next year so its time for that potential to start showing itself.

But as Chuck points out, we don't need Price and Tanaka for the pitching to improve significantly. We just need a couple of solid #3-4 types.
