LA Times: Angels' Jerry Dipoto is limited in attempt to improve team

Recommended Posts

The Angels are desperately in need of starting pitching, but they have little money left to spend and no impact prospects to trade, which makes it difficult for the general manager to make a deal.

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. — For a general manager heading into what could be his walk-the-plank year, Jerry Dipoto appears calm and assured. His contract guarantees him nothing beyond next season, and the playoffs have gone on without the Angels since 2009.

Those options are depressing.

"As an offensive team, we're in very good shape," Dipoto said. "In the bullpen, we're in good shape. In the starting rotation, there's still work to be done."

I don't agree. The bullpen is still questionable.

While I agree, I feel like they could be at least average. I am a pen guy, so my pref would be one more high end guy. If they are gonna go cheap on SP, they might as well make the pen strong as can be. JD did a nice job of getting DDLR last year and my hope is that he can get another similar type of player on the cheap. I also think Morin is going to have a big impact and Alvarez and Bedrosian could chip later in the year. I am very much hoping Maronde turns things around because he could be big for us. All in all, I like our options a lot better and I do think they're in 'good' shape but I want them going in to spring in 'very good' shape.

Ya, I'm not sure how replacing Scott Downs with Joe Smith, Michael Kohn with Fernando Salas, and Jerome Williams with Joe Blanton/Matt Shoemaker/Chris Volstad/Wade LeBlanc constitutes being in good shape.

They'll have better depth in the minors with Morin, Alvarez, et al moving up though, I guess.

If only Wells had Gil Meche type class and voided the contract. He has to know he's a worthless piece of sh*t as a player that is being paid more money next year than most people make in a lifetime to not put on an Angels uni.

Check out this page. Vernon Wells has made $40 in the time since I opened it.

I feel like a lot of fans are short-changing this pen Dipoto has assembled. Burnett should be back healthy which is a huge boost. Smith is a worthy replacement for Downs. Salas has proven in the past he's capable of success in the late innings and was utterly dominant in AAA last year. Rasmus is in the same boat. Jepsen is an arm no one is counting on, so if he pitches up to his ability it'll be all the better. DDLR is steady and coming back and we've got a plethora of projectable young relievers in Morin, Alvarez and Bedrosian that should be knocking on the door soon.

The Angels have too many options for it to turn into a total dumpster fire as in years past and by the end of the year, if things break right for the Angels that could be one of the deepest pens in baseball.

They had options last year too and most of them sucked

Wells

Pujols

Greinke

Hamilton

I think I've ranted about this before but no team can make mistakes as big as the ones above and not be royally !@#$ed.

Add in the 5 million in Mike Scioscia's contract and you have 75 million worth of dead weight on this team. you just cant make that many mistakes and expect to remain competetive.

Jeez, that article didn't paint a pretty picture. No money to sign anybody of worth and no teams want what the Angels are selling/Angels want more than what teams are willing to sell to them for what they are selling. Don't agree with Dipoto that the pen is in good shape, but they got bigger fish to fry with the SP and little money to spend. Can only do so much with so little to spend. Smith was a good addition, but they definitely need another arm....probably don't have the resources for it, however

Gonna have to make some low level signings and hope that they hit a home run with it. Capuano and Maholm would be the 2 arms out of that bunch I'd be ok with
