The real tragic numbers are 40-69, our record since that 27-17 start.

29 friggin games under .500. The true measure of this season. A whole lot of things need to change before we can compete again. A lower draft pick will not make much difference, but go ahead, lose some more games.

I agree that losing for a lower draft pick doesn't make much of a difference.  However, trying to win by giving players like Lorenzen, Ford, Sierra and Duffy more playing opportunities makes even less sense.  Embrace the loses and play the kids.  Maybe Ohtani will see a reason to stay by seeing some of the younger players, because watching Lorenzen, Ford, Sierra and Duffy playing is not inspiring.

  2. Nice story. Enjoyed hearing all of the back stories.

Robin Ventura was a bitch as a player. I wouldn't talk about it either if had my shit handed to me after spouting off about what he would do in that situation.

Funny, Winfield and Ryan had no problem talking about their incident. I think people forget how "special" Ventura thought he was. Fuck Ventura.

Nevin has managed in the minor leagues. And he does have MLB managerial experience, now.

Montgomery has literally no experience. He went from front office to bench coach.

Plus at least Nevin has some cred as a former player.

I would keep Nevin over Montgomery but hey I'm not the GM.

    Montgomery Career WAR is 0.1

    Nevin Career WAR is 15.9

You might be right but why didn't they just make him the interim manager instead of Nevin? No managerial experience?

My guess is that the losing streak happened before Minasian could get his ducks in row.

Minasian didn't want to hand that to the guy he sees as the future manager.

I agree with this but simultaneously cringe at the reality that Minasian may not see his new manager as having the skill set to deal with the remains of the Maddon Shit Show.  Seems to me that Montgomery could have built up some social capital with the players by being the interim-manager this season.  Something doesn't seem right.

    What a mess.

Montgomery will take the job.  Minasian will finally get full influence over the roster and put together the team he wants.  Including the coaches.  I'm not implying that means we're gonna start winning all of a sudden.  Just that he'll offer Montgomery the job and they won't lose 90 games or more next year so he'll look good on paper.  It'll be a nice opening salvo for Ray regardless of what new ownership does.  And in a lot of situations, new owners won't gut the front office.  So Minasian essentially has one last chance here.  If the team doesn't show something positive next year, they will move on.

    Sounds like Eppler-Ausmus revisited.

Yeah.  I do feel, though, that teams need a ton of SPs to get through the season, but I agree that SP is not a big priority.  I do think we need at least one SP, simply for the sake of helping buffer against the inevitable injuries, but that quarter is solid and, health permitting, should be fairly good.

We also have a few SPs in AA that could be factors at some point next season as well.

All that said, the fact that Livan Soto is 8th on this team in fWAR, in terms of offense, despite having less than 30 at bats likely says all you need to know in terms of where this team needs to improve the most.

    The GM?
