Right - I would have to assume that it would either be a SP prospect or a C prospect.  It likely depends on how the preceding 8 picks go and who Minasian perceives as better value with the 9th pick.
But regardless, I do expect to see a high pick used on a catcher, whether it's in round 1 or 2.

I think he's probably better than Barria.  But the key thing would be adding layers of depth.  If we can keep Suarez, Sandoval, etc in AAA and stretched out, while having, say, Snell, Bundy, Heaney, Quintana, Canning, Ohtani*, then that should hopefully help improve our floor, at least, as a team.
And, on a one-year deal, Quintana has a vested interest to rebound and pitch well.  I know people point to Eppler's failed experiments, but this is where we have to place our faith in our new talent evaluator to pick someone with a better chance of rebounding than Eppler.

Ahh I see what you're getting at. Trading for someone like Snell, then signing Quintana. 
That's not a terrible idea, since it's likely if we sign Bauer, the budget is almost gone and we need other pieces.
I don't like Quintana, personally. But if we got Gray or Snell to be the frontline starter and stashed Quintana in the back, it could be a solid choice. Gives us depth and likely $10-15 million in payroll to spend on RF and catcher, and maybe another bullpen piece.

Yessir.  It doesn't have to be Quintana - could be someone like Odorizzi or others.  But yeah, you get my point - acquire a high-caliber arm via trade, someone who has a 3-4 year commitment and still on the young-ish side, and then roll the dice on a middle-tier arm in free agency who likely just requires a one-year commitment.  
Our prime trade pieces are Adell and Jackson, as we are stacked with OFers and have 3B covered for years and can afford to part with both.  If we can build a trade around those 2, I think we'll be in great shape.

I am pretty certain that winning also matters to Perry. 
I don't care how much a GM of any team speaks about character and targets high-character guys -- there is always a talent level that will override those concerns.  Besides; Bauer is more "Twitter Troll" than "bad teammate," from what I can tell.

Too many question marks not to acquire two more starters. Ohtani still has to prove he can get people out after his arm troubles. Canning had arm issues. Are they behind him? Can Bundy repeat a year like 2020? Heaney and Bundy are free agents at seasons end. Will either one be re-signed?

I get what you are saying, but I don't think you realize that it's rather common to have contracts with yearly increasing salaries.

Corbin's was very extreme, and I wouldn't expect see Bauer get that, but it's just an example of deals that have been struck for significant free agents.
Now, of course, not every contract is like that - Cole is getting 36mil yearly.  But in an offseason where many teams are crying poor due to the havoc COVID-19 wrecked on their financials, I would think a staggered deal might be more probable than not.

So for example, if Bauer has a 6/150 deal, he could get:  20mil, then 22, 24, 26, 28, 30.
That wouldn't be intensely backloaded and he'd be getting ~10% raises per year.  I think that is a reasonable progression in terms of dollars.

no one is saying to pay him 10m in the first year and 40m in the last.  But punting 5+ mil down the road a bit helps meet current needs.  
money is worth less in the future.

I’d trade either for the right pitcher.  I also won’t blame Eppler if he doesn’t trade Marsh for a guy like Boyd.  If he does trade him for Boyd I won’t like it, but I am more prone to take a wait and see approach.  

Castellanos is a yes to play First base/DH and very little outfield. Yes to trading Adell for the right Pitcher but only if a package of Marsh and other prospects isn't gonna get it done.
