I have them at 142M. Threshold is 206

That's including arbitration eligible guys and it's the CBP payroll.
Do you really think they spend 10M on Shoemaker and Ramirez? I doubt it.

If the Angels have an opportunity to sign Machado that’s what they need to do. We have no idea if Arenado will be available.
Bird in hand and all that.

2020worldseries reacted to yk9001 in The shift has ruined Pujols
I've said this from day freaking one.
Angels are stuck with him for three and a half more years, no ifs ands or buts.
Posters saying he would retire out of pride, or after he hits X or Y milestone, or to "preserve his .300 average" should not be able to operate machinery. Or reproduce.

I would love to see an OAK vs. NYY wild card game. Truly a David vs. Goliath matchup.

2020worldseries reacted to rafibomb in JMF up, Deck McGuire down
The Angels aren’t calling up JMF over Ward. They are calling him up to replace Valbuena’s role as a lefty bat that can play multiple infield positions. A role he should have had a long time ago. When Ward will be called up he will be playing one position and one position only, 3rd base, and hopefully logging the majority of the starts there the rest of the season.

2020worldseries reacted to Second Base in JMF up, Deck McGuire down
The predictable outcome here is that Ward takes over at 3B, which pushes Cozart to 2B, Fletcher to utility and Fernandez into the part time DH/1B role.
There should be enough at bats for all in this scenario, but I think the real question here is if that outcome provides enough offensive certainty for a team that's looking to compete. I feel it does, but the Angels have a history of being notoriously reluctant to promote and play their prospects, though one can hardly blame them given the lack of quality prospects recently.
Valbuena was a shining example of this reluctance. There were better options and this move should've been made two months ago.

It gives them a potential solution until Matt Thaiss is ready or they trade for a productive 1B.

2020worldseries reacted to Jeff Fletcher in An honest question about Mike Scioscia's future
I think there are different layers of people in Scioscia’s circle, some closer than others. Everyone has an idea of what he’s going to do, either because he’s told them directly or made comments hinting at it or made comments that someone else relayed to you and so on and so forth. It’s like that telephone game.
It is up to the reporter to decide how reliable the information is that he’s getting. Is someone telling you what he knows or just what he suspects or just what he heard someone else suspect?
Also, what does “expected” mean? 90 percent? 75 percent? 51 percent?
Thats why all this is dicey, from a reporting standpoint.
Rosenthal is the best, though, and I don’t believe he’d be going off half-cocked. I did sit 6 inches away from Scioscia and he looked me in the eye and insisted he had made no decisions.
This whole thing could be a game of semantics. Maybe in Scioscia’s mind if he’s 90 percent sure he’s doing X, he still hasn’t decided because it’s not 100 percent. To someone else who knows Scioscia is 90 percent leaning in one direction, he has.
A month ago, I had been telling people I thought it was 60 percent he wouldn’t be back, so did I “expect” him to be gone?

2020worldseries reacted to Troll Daddy in An honest question about Mike Scioscia's future
Mike Scioscia future looks great ... he's still young and probably one of the most respected and prepared managers in the game. It's laughable when some believe he is old school. Scioscia is a modern day manager and young or old players like playing for him.
It's time for a change in Anaheim but that takes nothing away from his abilities as manager.

2020worldseries reacted to Angel Oracle in Here are the potential free agent closers available for 2019.
He's been better the past 2 months (22 innings, 1.41 WHIP, 22/10 K's/BBs, 2.45 ERA), after walking 16 in his first 19 innings. ERA has dropped from 3.72 to 3.07 in that time.
Only 3 HRs allowed in 41 innings. Still needs to further refine the command, but he is definitely in the setup role conversation for 2019 with his stuff.

Ottavino for a cheap deal, maybe similar to Brandon Morrows deal with the Cubs

2020worldseries reacted to Warfarin in Scioscia NOT stepping down
That's cool man. We can agree to disagree on this matter. I am fiscally conservative when it comes to spending $$ on free agents and am all for prudence, but this is one spot I'd like to take a chance on.
It is just my opinion, but I feel a catcher's impact on the game is by far the greatest of any position player, as they literally impact every single pitch defensively, whereas other defenders only get a handful of chances per game. So I am more amenable to overpay for a player who I feel has a strong chance to be a great catcher for "most" of the contract than I am for other positions/players.

2020worldseries reacted to totdprods in Valbuena DFAd?
Hah, Fernandez left the SLC game early. Be funny when he is the call-up and not Ward or Rengifo.
We'll see Ward soon, but something tells me not quite yet. Maybe Chavez is headed to SLC to work with/assess Ward's defense so Eppler can go into offseason with an idea of if he needs 3B help.

So what are you saying? Sign Grandal so he can catch the next year or two and then DH in the future?
Why invest a large 4/5 year contract into someone who you are already questioning his ability to play his position in the future
sounds disastrous to me
-
2020worldseries reacted to totdprods in Scioscia NOT stepping down
I almost think I'd rather see which catcher is displaced when Grandal, Ramos, etc. sign.
Eppler can probably nab someone very effective on the cheap again via trade.
-
2020worldseries reacted to Warfarin in Scioscia NOT stepping down
Let's wait to see if the Dodges actually offer the QO. The Dodgers have the best catching pipeline in baseball and have a litany of great catching prospects. If they offer a QO, it's possible Grandal accepts (I think the QO will be around 19-20mil?). They may not want to run that risk, as they have other holes to fill on that team.
If they do offer it, then it's obviously a consideration, since it's another cost to whomever signs him.

Problem solved.
