Do you think it made Darvish, or Tanaka worse? Once they came here they both eventually tore their UCL. Darvish worse than Tanaka but both did get hurt.

But for all the belly-aching about young players with high pitch counts, there's a place where young people throw as often as American kids, but the adults don't have Tommy John surgery as often.
    Japan.
In Japan, young pitchers throw insane innings all the time. Daisuke Matsuzaka famously threw 250 pitches in a high school tournament, and a young man threw 232 pitches this year. When it comes to one-game workloads, young pitchers in Japan have no peers.
But take a look at the prevalence of Tommy John surgeries in Japan over the last two-plus seasons, thanks to this Wikipedia list translated for us by Patrick Newman. Even once adjusted for the number of teams in each league, the differences are stark.
    Year TJ/Team NPB TJ/Team MLB 2012 0.833 2.30 2013 0.667 1.63 2014 0.083 1.10
So Japan has similar structures in high school and college -- with sometimes even more intense one-game workloads -- and yet in the big leagues, their elbows remain healthier. Seems fairly cut and dried. We should be looking at the Japanese pitching structure for

There was a story that the Giants met with Ohtani and Ohtani expressed concerns about playing the outfield, which led some (including me) to believe that he really only wanted to pitch and DH. I never read anything saying any team didn’t want him to try to hit.

I agree. I had him pegged for 140-150 innings and 250-300 PAs, depending upon performance and injury luck. I really don't think that workload is crazy-- or, at least it's no more crazy than a guy trying to be a high-level hitter and pitcher in the Majors.

Three days a week is 80 games. Four is 105-110 and five is 135. There are actually 26 and a half weeks in the regular season. But only 23 days off to account for the missing half a week. Also there are four games off for the All-Star Break of that 23.
Now obviously some weeks there are 7 games, some there are 6 and some 5. Starting on Thursday means weeks start on Thursday for this example and end on Wednesday.
    Weeks 1, 4, 7, 9, 10, 19, and 23 are 7 game weeks. = 49 games
    Weeks 2, 3, 6, 8, 11, 13, 14, 15, 17, 18, 20, 21, 22, 24, 25 and 26 are 6 game weeks. = 96 games
    Weeks 5, 12 are only 5 game weeks. = 10 games.
Week 16 is a 4 game week (All-Star Break) and week 27 is a 3 game week (End of Season).

That's easy. The list of all-time FO guys in American sports is basically Jerry West and Branch Rickey. It's amazing that EVERY team he's had a hand in (either as GM, President, or advisor) immediately turns the corner. He built two separate dynasties with the Lakers, turned the Grizzlies into a half decent franchise, and then started working for the Warriors.

I dunno if I am reading all of these correctly, but it looks like this would be my EXACT ballot if I had one. Each one of those guys is a no-brainer to me.

I expect Middleton and Wood to be on the team. Middleton had some rough outings last year so it’s no slam dunk he’s one of the best 7 relievers, especially when he has options.

Pujols also had arthroscopic knee surgery in 2012 and suffered through plantar fasciitis in 2013 which means he's been going through this foot issue for what 5 years now?  And you think someday he will magically heal from it.  Ok.
Many would say his body is breaking down.
The worst part is that he's playing  through the foot issue just so he can chase the HR record while simultaneously  crippling his teams playoff chances. And that's very selfish.

This is basically how I feel.
No amount of hand wringing from guys on here will get the Angels to release him or to bench him.  He’s had one truly awful season.  He’s just severely over paid and that’s not going to change until he retires.  We are doing all this bitching and complaining for what, so C.J. Cron or Luis Valbuena can get more at bats?  Um ok.
Good news to the guys that hate him, if he embarrasses himself again this coming season he’s one step closer to stepping away.

Um... plantar issues usually eventually heal. Look, I am not saying that Pujols will suddenly become a 40/40 guy or anything, but half of the board is acting like he has to be unhooked from life support before he's dragged to the ball park.
I'm just saying that it's not crazy for him to rebound a little bit next year. Will it be worth his contract? Hell no. Could he be a 1 or 2 war player that enables us to use Ohtani in the best way possible? I think it's doable.

He had packed more career into his first ten seasons than most. After 17 seasons he's top 50 in games played and top 35 in PA's for a career. He's got a ton of mileage on him and it shows. I'm just trying to figure out what the payoff is for the OP or anyone else who obsesses over proving something circumstantially that will obviously never be proven by actual evidence
