halosfan1970 reacted to tdawg87 in Mariners sign Chris Iannetta
I was thinking that yesterday, and then I looked at Salas' stats and realized he really isn't as bad as he seems to be.
Don't get me wrong, he's annoying and should never be brought into a close game with runners on base. But his peripherals are good. For example, he doesn't walk anybody. And his K/BB ratio the last two years has been outstanding. And so has his K/9. And his FIP. He also doesn't give up an insane amount of hits.
Honestly I don't know what the hell his problem is.

halosfan1970 reacted to Stradling in Mariners looking to trade Mark Trumbo
No one is defending the contract, you just only see the bad in it. Also why would how people originally being excited have anything to do with "defending the contract to the bitter end". "Clown buddy Aybar" is a real choice description for a player that was pretty damn good, played hard for us for about 10 years and came up through the organization. I truly wonder what kind of enjoyment you get out of this, seriously.

halosfan1970 got a reaction from ten ocho recon scout in Mariners sign Chris Iannetta
So it's possible the 2016 Angels' roster could be without Iannetta, Freese, and Salas. The AngelsWin community is going to need to quickly decide on three new players for constant scorn.

halosfan1970 got a reaction from Angel Oracle in Mariners looking to trade Mark Trumbo
You are sentimental. CJ Cron's offensive stats and Mark Trumbo's stats look nearly identical. Cron hits for a little more BA. Trumbo hits for a little more SLG. Both have a terrible OBP around .299.
Trumbo is a passable 1B backup. His defense as a COF is abysmal.
Trumbo costs $9m. Cron costs $520k. Easy choice.

We have a better chance of landing Dee Gordon, and that's still not the greatest chance with the depleted farm system.

I agree. Marcell Ozuna is the more achievable target from the Marlins. I just don't see them parting with Christian Yelich. However, I'd think bigger and look at trading for both Ozuna and Dee Gordon.
Start with Santiago and Kole Calhoun for Ozuna and Gordon. It probably takes more. I don't know, but that isn't a total mismatch in value. Trading Calhoun makes signing Heyward for RF imperative.
Ozuna - Trout - Heyward is a strong outfield. Gordon at 2B is a huge improvement.

I can live with Cowart IF the team addresses 2B. A Giavotella-Simmons-Cowart bottom part of the lineup scares the crap out of me.

halosfan1970 reacted to ettin in 2016 Los Angeles Angels Primer Part VII: Third Base
Scotty,
As I explained in the article it's not necessarily about money or potential performance here. It's about CONSISTENCY of performance at the MLB level of which neither Kubitza or Cowart has.
The front office wants to avoid experimenting with prospects in the 5-year Trout window whenever possible I suspect. Avoiding wild fluctuations in performance helps bring stability to a team and allows the front office to better project out total team production and performance and that is why I am suggesting Freese will get re-signed (not to mention he is looked at as a very positive team leader and since we just lost one of our other team leaders in Aybar this seems even likelier now).
Cowart is a good defensive player but other than his red hot .422 BABIP run in AAA (PCL) what else has he shown in the last three years? I WANT him to succeed as I interviewed him and he seems like a good young kid so I'm definitely pulling for him. However hitting MLB pitching is a lot different from PCL pitching and I see him needing time to not only acclimate to higher level off-speed stuff but also to learn how to hit LHP better which he did not do a good job of last year. He's got youth and upside and I think he can be a solid MLB 3B but he doesn't appear to be that right now.
Kubitza has a more consistent Minor League history of run creation but his defense isn't as strong as Cowart's. Likely part of the reason they are playing with him at 2B is that if he can provide average defense there his offense would be well above average at 2B whereas it is only slightly above average at 3B. But again Kyle lacks MLB experience just like Cowart making his potential performance harder to pin down which means higher variation which is what the front office is trying to avoid.
Also one of the major reasons I'm suggesting Freese is that this team needs depth!!!! By signing Freese back you'll get a steadier performance along with team leadership. But most importantly you can play Cowart (or Kubitza) as a backup corner infielder (I like Cowart in this role because of his defense). This gives the team depth because if something happens to Freese (and he does have an injury history) Cowart or Kubitza could step in and it would be better than a more generic prospect.
Not only do the Angels need to fill holes they need to fill depth. Signing Freese back is a smart move not only for consistent production and leadership but for team depth. Cowart and Kubitza's full time play should come eventually but this doesn't feel like the year to do it especially for Kaleb.

halosfan1970 reacted to bloodbrother in Angels have been linked to Chris Davis per Heyman
They really do need to upgrade at 2B. Not sure you can pay that much for Simmons only to have his MIF partner be Gia and his terrible defense. If you're going all out on defense, then go all out. Helps improve the bench since Gia would be a solid backup

in all honesty, if we get a frontline starter, and a bonafide mr badass to play LF, im ok with 3B as it is. Roll the dice and hope kubitza figures it out, cowart at worst is johnny mac -

halosfan1970 got a reaction from ELEVEN in Jeff Fletcher: Angels To Meet With Freese's Agent This Week
It looks like Freese played in 134 games in 2014 and 121 games in 2015. He's averaged 134 games over the last four years. He went on the 15-Day Disabled List once each in 2014 and 2015. Both DL stints were for a fractured finger following being hit by a pitch.
The narrative that Freese is injury prone is nice but completely unsupported by fact.

Hicks isn't bad, but he's basically Peter Borjous with some huge Home/Away and L/R splits. Borjous FWIW is listed as a possible non-tender candidate -- would much prefer to have him over Cowgill.

halosfan1970 reacted to Stradling in Mariners close to signing Chris Iannetta
I'm considered myopic when it comes to the Angels but my god you and the prospects, just wow. You think Bandy is better than Iannetta at everything based on what? You think Kubitza is better than Freese, based on what? You like the new guys but if they were all as good as you make them out to be we would be the best team in the league by a mile.
