It certainly seems Arte has been hands off for a couple years now. 

Just so we’re clear it always starts with the owner, this isn’t unique to Arte.  
Why do you do this to yourselves?  Like seriously why?  

 

Arte and Carpino need to stay the fuck away from anything baseball related. Having a budget is fine, but just set it and get away.
 
Then, and this is the most important need and hole for the Angels, they need to hire a Head of Baseball Operations. Someone that oversees the entire org from top to bottom and instills a plan and a process that EVERYONE follows. And if they don’t, get rid of them. That includes players, coaches, ball boys, GMs, anyone. 
 
If they are going to spend money on anything, spend money on this hire. Hire the best guy in the entire world and give him whatever he wants. 
Do I believe this will happen? No. Why? Because Arte is a dumbass when it comes to management of this organization and winning is not the #1 priority. 
 

 

 
 

We don't know how much the Angels spend on scouting and development, but the results speak for themselves. If they're spending as much as other big-market teams they're getting ripped off.

There’s a reason why the Angels keep hiring first-time GM’s who can be puppets, and it starts with Arte Moreno.
There’s a reason why the Angels have had instability in managerial positions, and it starts with Arte Moreno.
 
Jeff Fletcher will always be quick to point out that we don’t know how much the Angels spend on player development, scouts, front office personnel, et al.
But here’s what we do know:
- The Angels have consistently had issues paying/taking care of their minor leaguers.
- The Angels keep cycling through GMs and Managers with no stability.
- Arte Moreno has interfered with Baseball Operations (such as forcing the Rendon signing, nixing the Joc trade, forcing the Wells trade, and Pujols signing).
- The Angels have failed to consistently develop players outside of unicorns like Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani.
 
Until Arte Moreno changes his ways or sells the team, this team isn’t improving. Maybe they luck into 1 postseason appearance, but that’ll be it. He rode the coattails of what Bill Stoneman built at the beginning of his ownership, and it’s been a disaster ever since then besides lucking into 1 playoff appearance in 13 years.

I can't remember the last time I watched a game... even on my nights off. 
I still listen to them on the radio at work, but lately it's for an inning here or there... then back to something else.
Was talking to a buddy at work about this earlier tonight. He's had a 20 game plan for 17 years now. Has only gone to one game this year, and paid like 2 grand for the package. Isn't renewing.
To me, it's a combo... the team sucks. And has for a bit... and only seems to get worse.
But adding to that is the merry go round roster... love Ohtani. Love Trout. Etc.
After that? Nobody seems to be here longer than 2 or 3 years or so... hard to feel any attachment to guys who come and go so quick and often.
Not a lot of entertainment value.

I think it was reaching a point where Marsh was either going to go down to AAA or they needed to find a trade because of 4 OF needing to play. Not just right now, but going forward. They clearly still believe in Taylor Ward, although he’s been really bad and like Walsh seems to have no confidence. So that other spot ideally goes to Adell or Marsh. They found someone who still likes Marsh for his defense and upside, and willing to part with a blocked prospect.
Now, I say it seems they “chose” Adell but they continue to pull him out of games and not start him. Have no idea why if you just traded Marsh. Give Adell 40 games in a row to see if he can make progress. They’re doing really stupid stuff (late defensive subs, platooning outfielders) like they’re in a race and need to win. They should be assessing guys that have a future with the team. Sierra, Velazquez, Suzuki, or Rojas should not be playing at all. They have no role in 2023. I hate it when they do this stuff.

The thing about the Angels trading anyone for prospects is that they can't properly develop or scout talent.  The fact that we've made the playoffs once in the past 13 years and still consistently have one of the most barren farm systems in baseball is a testament to that.  Say hypothetically we trade Ohtani: best case is maybe we'll get lucky and grab a higher level roster player along with some "can't miss" types that are too far along for our development staff to get their hands on.  The more "Angels" result would probably be Arte wanting to receive splashy roster players to grind into his marketing machine and to keep the MLB club spinning it's wheels, along with some fringe far off prospects.  
This is the reason we're in this twilight zone shit purgatory in the first place, and it starts from the top down.  Until Arte kicks the bucket or sells the team to competent leadership that actually cares about developing a winner, I don't see much changing no matter what path we take *cues Debbie Downer emoji*

I've supported boosting payroll as much as anyone the last few years, but getting harder to make the argument that it would actually do anything. 

Virtually every FA we sign, cheap or expensive, sucks. In fact, most FAs tend to suck. And we don't seen to be doing very well when developing or finding internal solutions either.
