A good interpreter can remember a good 30 seconds or so of speaking and then translate it word for word.  Some take notes and can do it for longer than 30 seconds.  This guy was summarizing.  That's what a layperson who speaks both languages typically does.  In this situation he needed an actual certified interpreter.  Not the dude with a Japanese mom who gets sushi twice a week.

It's actually hilarious someone in the Dodgers front office couldn't do a google search for a certified Japanese translator in the LA area before the game.
