jordan reacted to cals in I'm concerned
And let’s be honest:  Whoever signs Ohtani is going to get 2 or 3 years of amazing results, a couple of years of great to good results and 5 years of “he can’t do both anymore” for $60 million/year.
He’s my favorite player (along with Trout) but he’s turning 29 this year.  How many more years can he do both?  Will he still be starting 30 games and hitting 35 bombs as a 38 year old?  I won’t say he can’t do it because if anyone can, he can.  But he’s already had Tommy John surgery and what he does puts a lot of stress on his body.  And we don’t know how he will age because this is unprecedented.
Unless the team commits to “cap” level payroll or above for the duration of the extension, it probably won’t be worth it.
It’s going to sting terribly to watch him do amazing things for a half decade with another team.  But ultimately I can deal with it if that money is allocated in a way that lets the Angels be a perennial contender and not a disappointment with another aging superstar.

I've been an Arte fan over the years.
But a few things stand out here that don't give me the warm and fuzzies..
When he says he had several offers that were huge. But decided not to sell. Just because. The whole thing is weird... and seems stupid, honestly. Not just to back out. But essentially indecisive and short sighted... like a lot of the moves over recent years.
Piggyback that with "we aren't trading Ohtani". Seems sort of the same problem... not going with the smart move. Almost like a hoarder, who keeps stuff for sentiment, when everyone around is pointing out reality.
When me mentions people telling their grandkids they saw Ohtani play. Yeah, sure I guess. Plenty of Mariner fans saw Jr and Arod play together. I doubt that replaces winning... and this goes back to his priorities. He doesn't understand this isn't a circus show.... as cool as Ohtani is, winning is FAR more important. We've all seen Trout dominate baseball for a decade.... personally I'd trade Trout for the 2000s teams any day. Trouts been amazing, but this losing stretch isn't any less because you get to see an historic player.
Lastly, it's kind of silly to mention the beer prices.... yes, we all love beer, Arte. And the cliche "beer and hot dogs taste better at the ballpark" line. Again.... I could go to a bar and catch the game on TV for better prices... I want to go to the game and be entertained... and that means watching a good team, not one or two guys who are amazing bat 4 times over 3 hours.

And most important, along the beer part. You buy a round of beers for 18 bucks and  tip 2? What a cheap ass.

I thought the article was really well done.
Lot's to digest here if we're going to deconstruct each and every word he said.  And we will.  I will
He didn't really say anything that was off brand by any stretch.  In fact, this was just more confirmation of the type of owner he is.  He wanted Trea Turner and apparently Minasian convinced him otherwise.  Gotta give some credit to Perry here as he seems to be the only GM so far who's been able to get Arte to do things the non Arte way.
But really it's the same stuff.  Arte loves baseball.  He wants to win.  He wants the fans to have a great experience.  He wants to be profitable.  He's gonna spend money.  All those things are great and should add up to a franchise that's kicking ass.  It's all the things we would expect to hear from any new owner had he sold the team.
The one thing that's continually absent from Arte's vocabulary is the importance of player development and the words farm system.  Maybe I'm reaching but if I'm an owner and we're talking about how to make and keep a franchise successful, that would be one of my primary talking points.
He made a non-specific comment about how if he were going to keep the team that they 'have to do better'.  I don't know what that means but hopefully it means all the things that we've talking about like having a proper infrastructure, focus on the farm and development, not meddling or knee-jerking decisions due to emotion, and so on and so forth.
There's a semblance of that with giving Perry more control and more money.  But that could be short lived if the team isn't in contention come July.  And all he'll be thinking about is how they should have signed Trea Turner.
If they don't make the playoffs, they lose ohtani and perry probably gets fired.  And we're starting all over again.  I really want to see what Minasian can do with a few seasons of similar control.

jordan reacted to Jeff Fletcher in Tom Verducci Exclusive Interview with Arte Moreno
It is weird because Moreno used to talk to the media once a year, and then he stopped. But I think a large number of owners never talk to the media at all, so in that sense it’s not weird.
My policy is I continually ask to talk to Arte and if he doesn’t want to that’s his choice. It’s easy for me to say it’s bad business for him to not talk but we all know it could go either way, so it’s his choice. I am more interested in what he does than what he says anyway.

It’s not like we’re going to get all the answers we want even if he does talk. He’ll give us his spin on things (just like he’s done with Verducci and Heyman) and on other things he’ll just refuse to answer. We’re not going to strap him in a chair and shock him until he tells us what we want to know.

The MLB article was written by some random writer, not the Angels MLB beat writer, and it clearly showed.
ESPN knows that the article will get more attention by writing in a way that suggests that Ohtani will be a free agent.

A quality changeup when you’re running at the velocity he has seems like it’d be tough to pull off. Agree on the cutter though. The fact he has two sliders to work with and a splitter help though. The command is the biggest plus at this point. I’m pretty optimistic about this guy.

If Joyce can locate and offer a quality secondary pitch that would elevate the bullpen quality to competitive standards it hasn't been at for a long time.

So, done for now. Don't think they go over the CBT threshold and I imagine they want to save some room for a pick up at the trade deadline on their way to the playoffs.

jordan reacted to Pancake Bear in Jared Walsh injury update
I suspect this is pretty typical for guys coming off of significant injuries and surgery. The key point is he's healthy enough to play now. Very few players are 100% through a season, we just rarely hear about it except for quotes like this that make people freak out.

I wouldn't make too much of what they say. IIRC, Nevin said the other day that Urshela will play basically every day between 3B, 1B, and SS. What he and Minasian says weighs more than some other site's commentary.
Personally, I think it'll just come down to who is healthy and performing well. Of the six infielders, all but Walsh can play 3B. Urshela probably won't play 2B, but Drury, Rengifo, and Fletcher will likely split time there in that order. 1B could be any of Walsh, Urshela, and Drury - again, in that order. Shortstop will be the interesting one. Fletcher is the best defensively and Urshela is probably the best hitter, but given Urshela's defensively flexibility, I'd only expect to see him at SS if Rendon and Walsh are both playing, and I'd only expect to see Rengifo at short if Urshela is playing corner infield. I doubt Drury plays shortstop much if ever.

You were definitely more active on our first two forums attached to our website than this all inclusive site that's home now so for that I ranked you by adding a zero to the end of your post count making you a Franchise Icon sir.

Perhaps the greatest challenge of going to a direct-to-consumer model is you have to compel consumers to actually subscribe - and keep them once they do. But this great unbundling of teams from local RSNs could be good for the consumer since it figures to force teams to put a better product on the field, court, and ice.

Taken from the article Fletcher linked.  The deterioration of cable networks and subsequently RSN’s could be good for sports in that it forces Owners to put a good product on the field.  Having Ohtani would most definitely keep a core audience for some time.  Also, winning would do that as well.

This is why any transactions or lack thereof at this point will be very telling to me.  Was it all hogwash or was he telling the truth about wanting to win?   The Angels still need pitching one way or another.

Question Re Arte Moreno spending up to Halos record payroll this off-season:
Did he do it only because he was selling the team?
Or is he finally willing to spend beyond the tax threshold for a change for the right guy (Ohtani)?

I mean I think it's obvious, we're tied for having the longest playoff appearance drought in the league, no player in the league has any reason whatsoever to think Arte's going to put a winning team together if they come here.

Just shows that the top 100 Prospect list can be overrated.
