Are you bringing kids? Aquarium in Monterey. Boardwalk in Santa Cruz. Various places in San Fran; GG bridge (You can park and walk across it.), the park, Fisherman's wharf, the crooked street, and isn't there also a Six Flags up there?
 
Oh, you could also put your cussing face on and drive around the streets of San Fran yelling back at the cab drivers (very educational for the young ones).

Most decks I've seen are best treated as three parts: the structure, the horizontal decking boards and the railings, skirt boards, etc.(the stuff that tends to show when you stand 30+ feet away). 
 
I would only put a product like Deckover on the decking boards. Put the time in on the railings and skirt boards and keep them natural wood.
 
If you do the Deckover and it becomes a mess, just replace the deckboards (with synthetic? I would).

You can usually tell when the original builders of a successful company are no longer around. There's typically a lot less building of the company and a lot more 'cutting' to try to generate profits.
