Exactly. I'd be happy with 170 innings and a 4.25 ERA from him. Does it make him a good pitcher? No, or at least not as much as it makes him a viable 4th or 5th starter and makes him worth the money.
That entire class of pitcher is freaking mine field though. Quintana, Richards, Kluber, Walker, Paxton, Smyly, Ray, Tanaka, Sugano....
Every single one of those guys could implode and it wouldn't surprise anyone. Conversely, every single one of them could be a solid investment and in no individual case would you necessarily be surprised. But the chances of one over the other aren't any greater. They're all a coin flip. Or a mine field. One wrong step and kaboom, blows up in your face.

I'm glad you were willing to step out and say it. Quintana is basically the same thing as Harvey, Cahill and Teheran. Maybe he'll be better, but it's the same price range and years for the same pitcher in the same part of his career.
People will fight you tooth and nail for a retraction on that statement but it's the truth.

Which would be better than anything we've had since, oh I don't know, probably 2014, maybe even 2011 without looking deeper.
So many here complain about us having a rotation of #3 and #4s, but that hasn't been accurate for some time. We've had guys who were maybe expected to be #3-types, or who were or could be #3-types, but I don't think we've had more than one or two guys in a rotation at any given time doing that.

Everyone else has been hurt or worse. Like, AAAA worse.

The only real big deviation from a typical Eppler offseason is the Raisel Iglesias deal...and I'm still not exactly sure why Cincy was so eager to part with him for just Noe and Rivas. Obviously, they were saving money...but that deal feels tremendously lopsided. Either we beat everyone to the punch before folks caught wind on Cincy being desperate to shed money ASAP or Cincy knows something we don't about Iglesias.

Otherwise, every other move is really no different from Eppler. Iglesias replacing Simmons makes sense, I don't see huge difference between Quintana and Harvey or Teheran or Cahill (obviously looks a little better on paper than those moves, but functionally, they're about even), and Suzuki is right in line with an acquisition like Soto, Lucroy, Smith, Rivera, Maldonado...
And I think that's okay. I think that's a testament to what Billy built here with the farm. It will be how Minasian uses this farm and how Minasian creates/keeps a development pipeline that will need to be watched.

If we had a different GM for off-season 2020/2021....
Stoneman - Zero moves made. Adell, Marsh, Detmers and Rodriguez are all promoted to MLB. Which is really cool and somehow works, amazingly.
Reagins - After missing out on every free agent, he trades Jared Walsh and David Fletcher for Jose Abreu, believing he's just entering his prime. Fires Matt Swanson for drafting Jo Adell. Fires the analytics department. Doesn't show up for winter meetings.
Dipoto - Signs Bauer for 7/220 and Springer for for 10/250. Trades Jack Kochanowicz for Noe Ramirez. Trades Adell and Marsh for Zack Greinke. Trades away all international bonus money for nothing. Every player he acquires underperforms. The Angels win in 2024, but suck every other year. Destroys organization.
Eppler - Re-ups Simmons because defense. Signs Sugano and signs Kluber for 1/14, Kluber is gone by July. Also signs Nick Markakis for one year, ends up dumping him in June after he goes .160. Claims every single waiver claim.
Minasian - Replaces Simmons with Iglesias for less money. Trades nothing for Raisel Iglesias. Gets Claudio and Suzuki for pennies on the dollar. Quintana 1/8.

His moves are Eppler-esque but the actual quality of players seems higher. Quintana > Teheran, Claudio/Iglesias > whatever bottom-of-the-barrel reliever Eppler would sign, Suzuki > Stassi, etc.

Keith Law is decent, but not necessarily great. I once had a civil Twitter debate with him regarding CJ Cron. He explained that because of a lack of plate discipline and inability to lift the ball, Cron would never be a starting 1B in the major leagues, or if he did, it would be as a second division starter at best. I said that I felt like he was going to be a .270/.320 hitter with 25+ HR.
It's splitting hairs really, but at any rate, he vehemently disagreed with me, which is a little strange because .270 and 25 HR isn't really an elite starter. It sounds like we debated over the same conclusion.
And as it turns out, we were both wrong. Cron has been the starting 1B on three very good teams, the 2014 Angels, 2018 Rays and 2019 Twins. And while Cron has hit for pretty much the exact amount of power as I said he would, his BA and OBP are both a solid 10-15 points lower than I believed they would be.
For someone that has to pay attention to 30 farm systems, he doesn't do a bad job. But he's also a flawed scout, just like many of us.

Bro, say what you will about the Angels/Arte they just haven't done that sort of shit during his ownership. Time and again when something like this has happened they have reverted to the whole we have a budget, we will do something if it makes sense/if its the right player.  That's been an efficient catch-all response/excuse that both answered questions while being vague enough to leave fans frustrated -- it's pretty much defined the Arte era and their decision making.
I just have a hard time believing this is what's happening, and if indeed it is happening, then I'd say its an ugly precedent and a reason for worry about Minasian's front office.....so, I refuse to believe its as "obvious" as you think.
We have already had a front office that leaked propaganda to the media once... I want none of it.

I read Sonny Gray alot but not sold Cincy would just hang it up in the NL Central which like the AL West seems weaker on paper.

Jon Gray on the other hand from the Rocks I may believe. Not sure it’s better than anything out in the market unless you can bring another piece with it to fill a hole. Márquez suggestions seem like the Castillo thoughts earlier in the off season and would wipe out the farm. Not sure our new GM is ready for all in mode, in his first year.

Angels in 2030 got a reaction from Stradling in What are your predictions for Quintana as a member of the Angels?
Wait, you are seriously saying Minasian is better at GMing and acquiring one-year FA SPs than others?  Please tell me how so and what specific such SPs he's hit on....since this is his first GM job.  Fact is -- we have no idea how well he will do in his evaluation of players and being a GM.  Don't give me anything about ATL or Toronto -- we have no idea if his input was 0-100% at those places.  Just like we didn't with Eppler.  Many people (i guess not you) had high hopes for Eppler and that he'd be much better than the prior guys (just like your doing with PM).  I'm going to wait to see the results on the field before i start claiming to know how well a job PM will do.  Arte/etc. sure thought the other guys (Eppler, Dipoto, etc.) we're also hired to "evaluate this stuff and not just pull names out of a hat" -- yet how'd that work out?!?.  So for you to claim PM will be different before we even see results (let along complete the offseason) seems to be a bit premature don't you think?  I hope PM is better as well and gets it right -- but i'm tired of being let down each time.  So i'm waiting for results.  Arte is still the same guy hiring btw (he's failed at GMs, managers, etc -- why assume this is any different).
As to Quintana, you mention his track record.  Let's not forget he is getting older.  Older is worse...older is more prone to injuries.  2020 was a nothing burger for him.  So you are referencing 2019 & back.  I'm more concerned about future not track record.  Track record is why Pujols got a 10 year ridiculous contract.  I will say, i am more confident in Q than some of Epplers guys.  I'm just saying he comes with some uncertainty and our SP staff needs some certainty.  So i'm really hoping our last SP spot gets filled by someone young/good rather than a older/injury type guy like Paxton/Archer/etc.

Whomever it is that we acquire (via FA or trade) for the last SP spot, i simply have one desire: that the guy is signed longer than one year.  Then the FO can work on trying to get an extension worked out for Bundy.  We're currently in an extremely worst situation next offseason SP wise with only Canning signed (Ohtani too but he's basically the 6th starter).  Four SP spots open next year (assuming Canning can stay healthy).  One spot likely taken by a rookie.  So at least 3-4 open spots.
