The outcome was totally on the umpire.

That literally is already the rule. So the fact that the umpire was in the middle of punching him out makes this decision so ridiculous. The umpire very clearly didn't apply the rule correctly.

This seems like a perfect example of a game that should be protested and ruled in their favor.  They should play out the rest of the game in the near future with that call being the 2nd out.  Which means it won't.

horrible call by ump.  He literally moved his elbow forward into the ball.  Regardless, ball was in strike zone -- you can't have a HBP if the ball is in the strike zone.  Might as well stand over home plate and let the ball hit you in the stomach/chest.  Idiot baseball.

This actually pisses me off. If there was ever time to do a protest this is one of those times. A blatant rule goof up. It was in the strike zone. He’s out. End of story. 
 
Why didn’t they protest?

This is one of those cases the Umpire needs to know the rule book and enforce them appropriately. When they can't they have to be suspended and forced to complete a written test that verifies they understand the rules of the game before they can be reinstated. There is no excuse for this call and Angels Hernandez making up a strike zone. MLB needs to intercede.
