JBR reacted to Stradling in Do you think Eppler will get any more pitching?
I still think the best deal is Gray and one of their expensive relievers for a lesser package.

I wonder if teams with controllable pitching to deal now view Marsh as a legit guy to package a deal around now that he's in the top 50 of top 100 prospects?

I would say this is pessimistic, but with the way the Angels have endured injuries and dumpster fire performances the past few years, it's all in play.
I could legitimately see this team being a 94 win team, and a 74 win team as well. Lots can go right or wrong.

I just looked at Gray's numbers again, and he is much better than I think I had realized. I don't think I would hesitate to move Marsh and others for him.

JBR reacted to Jeff Fletcher in Poll: Would you trade top prospect Jo Adell for Mike Clevinger?
I don’t think the Indians would trade Mike Clevinger for Jo Adell either. They asked for Adell AND another player, which is because they’re still trying to win in 2020.
If Mike Clevinger was on the Tigers, they do an Adell-Clevinger swap straight up, easy.

For me, it boils down to this...what helps the angels win a title more, the next 3 years of Clevinger or the next 7 of Adell?

I’m torn, but the more I think about it, the more I think Clevinger will help more.

This great class of Angels superstars is ready to win now. Clevinger is a win now player who fills the Angels greatest need today. Adell is a win soon-ish player, probably, but no guaranteed, who plays a position where the Angels have Marsh waiting in the wings.

We have less clarity on where the angels will be in 3-5 years, and more clarity on the next two years. Clevinger should help more during that span.

Imagine if the Angels don’t go all in during the next two years and don’t win, Trout and Rendon begin to decline, and then the MLB is locked out. A labor lockout isn’t a given, but it’s not far fetched either. Let’s win now while the stars are still stars.

JBR reacted to jordan in Poll: Would you trade top prospect Jo Adell for Mike Clevinger?
Yes in 2020, Clevinger would more than likely have a bigger impact than Adell for the Angels. Beyond that, Adell could out WAR Clevinger for many years. But with the Angels in such great need of front lines pitching, Clevinger could be more valuable for the Angels than Adell for several years. Then add Marsh, who has good upside, Clevinger +Marsh >Adell. I’m talking myself into this trade.

JBR reacted to jordan in Poll: Would you trade top prospect Jo Adell for Mike Clevinger?
You have to look at it like this...are Angels better with Adell and no Clevinger or are they better with Clevinger and Marsh (to presumably take over RF when ready)?  I almost think Angels are better with Clevinger and Marsh but I’d just hate to see Adell become a stud for someone else.

JBR reacted to GA16 in Poll: Would you trade top prospect Jo Adell for Mike Clevinger?
I think Adell for Clevinger is a perfect trade in that I could see both the Angels and Indians saying no.
While it would hurt to move Adell, such a great home grown prospect, I would do it for Clevinger. 3 years of control of a likely top 5 SP in baseball is exactly what this team needs right now. Having Rendon in the lineup for the next 7 years and Marsh right behind Adell makes the decision easier.
I understand why the Angels FO and the fans on the other side of would say no to the trade (I would be content if they didn't make the trade) but I think Clevinger would put the Angels over the top this year and the near future.

Hmm, I don't see it like that at all, personally. I think we're all about hoarding everything now and proposing hilarious trades involving star players and a handful of prospects we don't care about.
It's funny though because we used to whine about Stoneman being unwilling to trade anyone.

JBR reacted to Buttercup in Sign Alex Wood or Trade Prospects for a Starting Pitcher?
Since a trade hasn’t happened yet I feel the asking prices are sky high. It might be best to sign Wood now and seek a trade during the season. Marsh and other prospects might have gained value at that time as well. More starters are likely to be available once some teams have lost their playoff hopes.

JBR reacted to Docwaukee in This might be unpopular but I think overall Eppler has done well
He's doing things the right way.
The way the Cole deal went down was a major disappointment that Eppler couldn't really control.  It's a bummer because he was the perfect fit for this team and the plan for the next 6-7 years or so.  There really wasn't a player who was/is a better match and there won't be going forward on the FA market for awhile.  It certainly complicated the plan.  It felt like we were happy gilmore trying to get grandma's house back and during the bidding process shoot mgavin came in and over bid just to hose us.
The thing we have to realize now is that we're still building.  Even if we did get Cole, we'd still be working more toward a year or two from now than 2020.  And Eppler has stayed on course.  While it could still happen, my biggest fear was not just losing out on Cole, but having the team go into panic mode and off load a bunch of prospects for guys with 1-2 years of control.
He's avoided the biggest mistake he could have made so far which is to try and play for 2020-2021 instead of improving the team for 2020 yet keeping the franchise in position to do well in 2021 - 2025.
As far as his drafts are concerned, it's way too early to judge.  Even on guys like Thaiss.  The thing that people don't realize is that he was missing on two major components of how rebuilding teams restock their farm.  (And don't kid yourself, we have been rebuilding).  First, there was almost no international infrastructure and he's been able to actually get some of the top international prospects the last few years including Ohtani who is the international gem of the last 5 years.
Second, he had very few major league players to trade away if any and even if he did, since the mandate is to essentially remain somewhat competitive, he could trade them anyway.  The CWS got Moncada, Jimenez, Giolito, Reynaldo Lopez, Kopech, Luis Alexander Basabe, Blake Rutherford, Dane Dunning, and others for Sale, Quintana, and Eaton which has become the core of their team for the future.
Eppler traded maldonado for Sandoval, Cron for Rengifo, Kinsler for Buttrey.  He got Simmons for what has amounted to very little.  Same for Upton.  He conjured a solid bullpen out of thin air and essentially brought a farm system to at least middle of the pack from the depths of hades.
Yes, he's made mistakes but what GM hasn't yet almost all of them have been pretty easy cleanup.
The major league team has to be better now though.  Without question.  You can't get away with the one year deals being busts forever even if they are easy to fix.  The major league team needs to win 88+ games or so this year and some of the things we've been waiting for to happen need to happen.  Like contributions from guys like Canning, Sandoval, Thaiss, Rengifo, Adell and maybe even Marsh.  Teheran and Bundy have to be helpful and not ASB release candidates.  Max Stassi has to show some value behind the dish.
Time for his efforts to show an actual impact on winning at the major league level.  Yet even if it doesn't and he gets fired for it, the franchise is in a much better position than it was 5 years ago when he started.

JBR reacted to nate in This might be unpopular but I think overall Eppler has done well
Not saying he is perfect, his biggest mistakes were hiring Ausmus and signing Cozart.
When you consider though how big of a mess the entire organization was when he took over, I think he has done well building the team up to be winners in the future.
Consider that he had the worst farm system, a team full of bloated salaries and no pitching depth.  He also had a stubborn manager that had clearly lost pace with modern baseball.  Consider that he wasn't drawn into huge bidding wars and overpays for pitchers that allowed the Angels to come into this offseason with a good amount of cash to spend, unfortunately the pitching was still way overpriced but I am happy with the direction of the team and also pleased that he hasn't emptied out the system with reactionary trades.
I really hope Eppler gets a couple more years but I am worried that if this season doesn't go well he is gone.

I love these questions man. For me, these are the questions I keep wondering for the players that I think will largely determine the Angels’ fate...if there are more yesses than no’s, we may well see Angels games in October:
Can they stay heathy? Ohtani, Heaney, Canning, Upton, Middleton
Can they be a reliable supporting cast? Bundy, Teheran, Bedrosian, Ramirez
Can they keep it up? LaStella, Fletcher, Goodwin, Robles, Buttrey
Will they take next step? Adell, Rengifo, Sandoval, Barria, Thaiss, Ward
Will they meet high expectations? Trout, Rendon, Simmons, Stassi (Fangraphs projects 3 defense fueled WAR)

    I would not assume that.

I did a big story on White at the end of the year and the only bad thing anyone said about him was he had some communication issues, mostly early in the year. Pitchers said he did know his stuff, and he definitely helped a few of them. Bedrosian said he pretty much turned his career around with one drill.

I wonder if he got fired for the same reason as Ausmus: Arte saw someone else available that he wanted.

Sandoval moved to the center of the rubber for his final 5ish starts last season and had about a 3.70 ERA in those games.
