i get my national board results back in 11 hours.
sent all of my videos and over a hundred pages of writing and student work samples back in may, and finally about to get the results.
knew i'd be nervous, but not this nervous.  it's a $10K bonus per year, so it'll be pretty nifty if i pass.
needless to say, i'll be having some drinks tonight while i wait.

it was supposed to be 12:01 CST, actually, but they just published scores about 10 minutes ago.
i certified, and now i'm going to sleep for about 30 hours.  fuck.

The Good Place is terrific.  Binged S1-3 a few months back, and will binge S4 when it's done.
Episode 5 of The Mandalorian was better than 4, but I think the show's writing team (Favreau) doesn't really know what kind of show they were making.  Are they doing a self-contained coherent story arc built on character every season like The Sopranos, Breaking Bad, etc?  Or are they going for a serialized, easy-to-consume-for-all-demographics type show?   Feels like the former rather than the latter to me so far, which is a shame.

in a nutshell, we submit about 100 pages of written commentary explaining how our teaching practice impacts our students positively in a variety of settings using student work samples to support it, submit  two 15-minute videos demonstrating our teaching practice in our specific subject areas (mine is English for 14-18 year olds), and show how we work with our colleagues and parents/guardians to impact students in our schools.
costs $2000 to submit our work, but some states (not cali, shocker) give monetary bonuses for certifying. some studies have shown that board certified teachers have a stronger impact on student learning than non-certified teachers.  not many studies, though, because nobody who can afford commissioning a great double-blind, placebo-controlled study is interested in public education (again, shocker).
it's rigorous enough that most states don't require board certified teachers to go through the process of re-certifying in a new state.
took me 10 minutes to write this which brings my wait time for scores down to a little over an hour.  thank you for the time suck!

Which of the following is grammatically correct, and why?
    - Tom is faster than me.
    - Tom is faster than I.
The answer is the 2nd one because the word "than" is a marker for a new independent clause, and "I" is the subject of the new independent clause.
But it's rare to see anybody write "Tom is faster than I" because it looks and sounds stupid.  I never correct myself when writing or saying it even though I know the rules of subject and object pronouns.
It's even worse when you use plural pronouns.
    - Tom is faster than them.
    - Tom is faster than they.
Yep, the 2nd one is correct grammatically, but nobody says or writes it because it looks and sounds so stupid because it's so normal to hear and see it written or spoken incorrectly.
And yeah, breaking kids of their incorrect apostrophe usage is pretty hard.  You use an apostrophe to show possession, omission, or a contraction.  The only exception to the rule is its/it's.  But publications to this day differ over how they use an apostrophe in a sentence like this:
The progressive tax has been around in the United States since the 1860's/1860s.
I've seen major publication use 1860's, and others use 1860s.  1860 possesses nothing in the above sentence, and it's not a contraction.  So why use the apostrophe there?
Same thing with shortening something like 1960s to  '60s.  The apostrophe rule works with that because the apostrophe is replacing omitted numbers, but I've seen major publications type that as 60's.
I love grammar and usage discussions about English because it's such a weird language.

Nothing says Merry Xmas like giving your anorexic/thyroid-impaired wife an exercise bike. Gotta shed that extra .025% of body fat, right?
Obviously, she has never ridden a bike or exercised in her life, so I can see why she was terrified about her first lesson....as her "super nice", "supportive", "loving", "giving" husband watched over her.
And then showing her gratitude by showing her progress losing that .025%  of body fat over a full year just to make sure Mr. Sleeping With the Enemy approves...super festive!

Mandalorian isn't elevated tv, but I didn't expect it to be.  i think it's a pretty nice start to non-animated original series for Disney+.
Speaking of animated, S4 of Rebels was pretty darn good, too.

Delete out Finn and Rose which was probably 1/3 of the movie, and Last Jedi isn't that bad.  Of course it's tough to block out that much of a movie when watching it.  Even at home.

the mr. rogers movie was truly idiotic.  bromide after bromide for old, white men to consume and get warm and fuzzy about.
ford vs ferrari was okay, mostly because of the way it looked. i like most of what mangold does.
