halosfan1970 reacted to Second Base in Angels have a big chance to improve in the next couple days
James Loney was informed he will not be making e Opening Day roster for the Tampa Bay Rays and that they're searching for a trade opportunity to present itself before Opening Day. He's a left handed first baseman that's considered to be a gifted defender. Last season he hit .280 and throughout his career, he's been a steady source of BA, OBP, lots of doubles and 10+ HR's on an annual basis. The big hurdle here is the money, but if the Rays are willing to knock it down to 2-3 million and get a depth piece in AAA in return, the Angels could have a dynamic option coming off the bench.
Loney would be an upgrade over Ji-Man Choi as late inning defensive replacement and primary pinch hitter and serve as insurance for C.J. Cron.
The Braves let go over former Angels farmhand Alex Torres, who has had a very good career as a lefty reliever. If we can slot him in AAA, he could be insurance if Mahle can't keep lefties off base. Also, Rule 5 pick Chris o'Grady will not be kept by the Reds and has been offered back to the Angels. O'Grady was fantastic in both AA and AAA last year.
Here's an opportunity that Eppler would be smart to jump on.

Since the poll asked "who wins" I voted Choi. His Rule 5 status gives him an advantage in making the 25 man roster, and he has mostly performed well.

If the poll asked "who should win" I would lean toward Ortega with his combination of speed, defense, and arm.

I agree. Playing next to Cron at 1B is going to do wonders for Gia's defense.

I'm no CJ fan but some posts here are pretty poor. CJ is getting surgeries and even attempted to change his arm slot. Overall the deal hasn't been great but to label him as not caring or weak because he has had injuries is pretty lame. I doubt he'll help much this year but he's not even in the conversation for Angel's worst acquisitions.

Oh I am.  I've watched them play and peaked at the numbers.  What I'm saying is that I'm not here to convince you otherwise.  You can take it for it's value and believe me or not.  But if if you don't, you're more than welcome to go find them yourself.

Cliff Pennington - a clear upgrade (definitely offensively & probably defensively) at utility infielder over Taylor Featherston.
Geovany Soto - a solid second catcher who is respected at game management and who can control running games far better than Chris Iannetta.
Craig Gentry -  a superb fourth outfielder who plays a plus CF. He hits left-handed pitching well and he is the speedy baserunner missing in the past. He's a clear improvement over Colin Cowgill.
Ji-Man Choi - a higher upside version of Efren Navarro for 1B/LF. He's not quite as good defensively, but he looks like he has much better gap power and OBP abilities offensively.

All four are capable of contributing far more in 2016 than just being warm bodies.

Craig Gentry had a .120 batting average over 56 plate appearances in 2015: Recency bias, small sample size bias, and framing bias are clearly in play with your "in-depth" analysis. A review of three years of offensive metrics and a look at Gentry's platoon splits is more encouraging than your concise analysis of ".120 Hahahahaha."

An MLB fourth outfielder has to be able to provide skills not always related to a high OPS/SLG. A fourth outfielder can provide above average on-base percentage, solid back-up CF coverage, and speed on the bases even if he is a slap hitter. Gentry is an improvement in each of these areas over Colin Cowgill in 2015.

The sad internet pedantry and a tired attempt at a snappy insult are noted. I may not be right about the Angel's bench in 2016, but I think I expressed my opinion reasonably well.

Apparently LaRoche brings his kid in the clubhouse and around the team EVERY SINGLE DAY. White Sox simply requested that he tone it down a bit and honestly it's a reasonable request IMO. I can't imagine a co worker bringing their child to work every day....would drive me crazy.

It is also an assumption that Giavotella can play 2B. His 2015 defensive performance was completely unacceptable.
