  1. different organization and potentially different qualifiers. one thing fans need to consider, and you are probably an exception because of your MWAH goings on, but the actual mitigating factors to a successful trade are details that we have little to no knowledge of. it's a significantly more complex proposition than fans think it is.
  2. they'd all be making 25-35 million per year, for 10+ years with opt out clauses. just like the premier FA players today.
  3. starters average innings pitched across mlb. 2009-5.81 2010-5.98 2011-6.03 2012-5.89 2013-5.71 perspective. the facts are not what our biases tell us they are.
  4. just the names i know: reddick, blanks, goebbert, vogt, freiman, gentry, barton. i can't really talk about any of the other guys because i don't have any frame of reference for their prospects. the point is i could manufacture the same production that butler would give me for a fraction of the cost, at least in my opinion. i look at it as the A's have very few dollars to spend, so that signing seems unwise from that perspective, but i understand you are a fan and fans want better individual players.
  5. some are trashing shields in this thread and i don't think that's fair or accurate. he's a good pitcher and he'd help the angels, but not for what he's going to get in FA and that's really the only issue.
  6. i see several names on that list i'd take over butler and 30 million of my very limited dollars.
  7. assists are the hallmark of a bad outfielder.
  8. doumit's not a catcher anymore, and he was a bad one when he was. i would be truly shocked if the angels were even looking at him. i like hundley, ross and soto in no particular order, but i think the angels may be perfectly comfortable using the recently acquired houston catcher as the backup.
  9. i don't care for him as a player, so i think it's great news.
  10. also, not a fan. his best pitch is his changeup and i think he uses it incorrectly.
  11. i figured you were placing the real value at the first 3 years. you said two, but i give him credit for having a good shot at 3. here's how i look at it, if they win a world series, then all contracts are worth it or forgiven. as it would be with any team. if they don't, then you have to look at the value you are getting. i think almost everyone would agree that 5 years is too long a term for a 32 year old catcher, considering how catchers crap out around 34 or 35, but the FA market has it's own demands. i figure they can get 3 starting catcher years out of him, 32-35, which leaves 2 backup catcher years, in regards to performance. an experienced backup catcher's market value is around 1, maybe 2, million per year, based off of existing backup catcher contracts. that means if they get 3 really good years of starting catcher out of him, which places him at 35 years old with 2 backup type seasons ahead of him, then he has to be worth 27 million per year the first three years. considering most good starting catchers are making around 5+ million per year, that's quite a discrepancy.
  12. i have to disagree, respectfully. this is his age 32 season, how long do you project him behind the plate? are you placing the entire value of the contract in the first 3 years with the last two basically being water under the bridge at that point? honest questions.
  13. i'm siding with the acquisition of miller and team control. i will mitigate my position with the caveat that the cardinals historically have a strong record in trades. so, i think they have an idea of what they're doing.
  14. i'm going to say that front offices place a value on keeping middle infield continuity, specifically not breaking up double play partners. i predict we will have both hk47 and aybar starting in 2015, in this case dipoto is telling the truth.
  15. that's not talking down to people. not in any way actually.
  16. nope. all this nonsense about arte. it's just drivel.
  17. the two prospects the rays received are both young and have had good success at their respective levels. i think this is one of those trades that are probably good for both teams. it's a classic wait and see trade.
  18. the american squad should commit seppuku for this grave dishonor.
  19. yes. i understand the tenor. i'm saying the dude is 23. it's very difficult to gauge any 23 year olds future.
  20. you guys need a lesson on accessory after the fact. it's not boras's job to cover up a crime, and steroids are a controlled substance. you can argue about whether they should be or not, but you can't argue about whether they are or not.
  21. to be honest, having your finger fall off while playing poker is one of the most baller things i've ever heard of. you've got to give it to the man in this case.
  22. this is very helpful stradling, NOT! <------did you see how dated that was? well, that goes back just as far as your advice.
  23. cabrera's is functionally 9/270 from today, for a 30 million per year average. he will turn 32 the beginning of the next season. so they will be paying him 30 million per year until he is 41. pujols' contract is 7/189, for a 27 million per year average. this season will be his age 35 season. the angels will be paying him until he is 42. i've excluded bonuses and personal services contracts because who knows what will be met and they're not really that impactful. like we both said, both contracts suck, but i think the tigers are going to get more out of cabrera than we are of pujols, but that's just my opinion.
