i don't like this thread and i don't like dipoto's comment.
you're either getting better or you're getting worse. i believe that wholeheartedly. now, because of this, i have to go to the gym.
thanks obama dipoto!!!
going from a future SS of addison russell to a much bleaker future of marcus semien for a half season of nothing still isn't a good trade. beane ****ed his team long term in the last 6 months.
yes. there's no way the angels have a plan of signing a huge contract FA pitcher, with a "plan" to get back under the cap when "someone somewhere sometime" gets injured. and don't forget that team has to also want to pay cj wilson 38 million dollars for two years.
that's not a plan, that's imagination.
that's what i was saying. i don't think the angels have any intention of being way over the luxury tax threshhold in spring training, hoping that somebody will need a starter due to injury. it puts too much pressure on them and relies on uncontrollable variables. not usually a sound budgeting strategy. like i said, i think that's the least likely scenario.
in my mind most likely scenarios in descending order:
cj stays with angels.
cj gets traded and angels sign james shields. because lester will have already signed with another team and scherzer is out of their price range completely.
cj gets traded and angels sign a lesser SP, like mccarthy.
no, i'd have to think that's the least likely of all trade scenarios. it leaves the angels without a starter. their payroll isn't going to carry a FA and wilson.
lester's going to be gone by tonight. scherzer has already turned down insane money, eliminating the angels i'd think. i could see shields fitting the timeline and the budget, but i don't think angel fans would be stoked. he would be an improvement over wilson though.
the worst thing that kendrys ever did, other than jump on home plate, was sign with scott boras. boras is only good for his A-1 clients. middling/good players are better served staying away from boras and jayz, and going with an agent who will focus on them and their needs. as was said, that 3/30 contract was best case scenario for kendrys, other than taking the QO, which i would have accepted.
i don't think it'd be unfair for the angels to eat 8-10 of the 38 million over two years. wilson at 14 million per is pretty reasonable in today's marketplace. the contract has value at that price point and duration. if they're willing to eat 10 million, then there's a decent chance he could be moved.

guess who drafted him?
i don't really see his value anymore, at one time it looked like he was a decent power hitter.
it really is. for those that say the A's are always good no matter what, i'd like to point out the five seasons known as 2007-2011. they won 76,75,75,81,74. all teams have upswings and downswings.
i don't think i was being cute, and i'm not particularly fond of that characterization.. what you're suggesting doesn't make mathematical or financial sense. the facts are that the going rate for top talent is around 18-20 million per year right now, and elite is around 30-35. why would you pay someone who would sign for 20 million per year for five years, to a contract that would pay them 33.3 million per year? just because it's 2 years less? why not just sign them for the going rate and if you get five years production then great, but if not then you could release them? the dollars are the same. also, you totally **** yourself salary cap wise.
whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat?! that's the craziest thing i've ever read on this board. literally.
edit: oooh, it was sarcasm. man, you got me hook line and sinker
wei yin chen is quite a bit better than you guys are giving him credit for. it was a good move on dipoto's part to try and get him because he has little name value, that belie his stats.

broke in to the major leagues throwing 192 innings of 4.02 ball. his first year. had a good 2nd year that was curtailed some by minor injuries. right back at 200 innings level last year with excellent numbers all around.
i think it would have been a very underrated steal if we could have got him. especially, if he was resigned.
sounds like a decent trade for both, actually.

the angels have the last pick in the 1st round. best record in baseball. playoffs don't matter. this is the year that i don't care about losing a draft pick. sign a good player and move on.
