DoubleOffTheWall reacted to Blarg in When do you predict our farm will move out of the cellar?
I really don't care what the farm system ranking is as long as it can provide the team with a flow of quality MLB players. Having an overstock of lean ground beef is not the same as a couple good steaks.

Stradling seems to really like the "Fister type." Read into that what you will.

Reading your words makes this downfall even more ludicrous. You just posed that the team's peak in 09, and then drafted the best player of this next generation right after, and THEN entered their downfall.
What other org could reach their peak, draft the best player and then enter a terrible phase? Only a franchise as dumb as the angels.

DoubleOffTheWall got a reaction from krAbs in What's behind Mike Trout's early struggles?
nice game for Trout today.
But I still feel something spoiled what could have been a much cooler Trout. I want the Trout from the first 2 full seasons - the 30/30 guy who was also the fastest player in the game, and an insane on-base machine. A reincarnation of Ricky Henderson with more power.
Now we just have a really good slugger, who is also prone to a lot of strikeouts and an on-base thats lower than the first 2 seasons. While he's amazing now, he doesn't transcend the game like he used to.

$77,500,000 to Wilson
$85,000,000 to Weaver
$40,080,000 to Aybar
$33,500,000 to Kendrick
Seems like we have far more reasons to add another contract than to avoid it.

Scotty is Nate Smith a lot better, merely better or about as good as Kershaw? I'll take your answer off the air...

I am not that impressed yet. All we have done is improve 2 areas where we either were solid (aybar) or had a decent replacement which would have only required money and no players (freese) - and we had a proven track record of winning when the latter plays. We havent done anything to address the real weakspots - LF, 2b and the pen and we have also weakened our farm to improve those areas where we already had some strengths.

how does everyone feel about upton? Feel like he's being overshadowed greatly by both Cespedes and Heyward, but 2-3 years ago we would have said he is the best of that bunch.

I don't think I would roll with Joe Nathan.
We need someone like O'Day or Clippard.

I think the approach I've proposed here is markedly different than what is being discussed in other threads, with people going back and forth on adding offense vs. adding a frontline starter. I myself was on the frontline starter bandwagon for some time but am changing my tune slowly.
The approach here is to spend resources on the pen first and foremost, and second, add players at the weak positions (LF, 2b, 3b) who are multidimensional if possible, but to actually work backwards - ensure they are solid defenders first and if that checks out, pick the guys who also have solid bats. I think most people would propose working the other way - find the big bats who also happen to be good defenders (i.e. Cespedes). I think my approach would then hone in on a guy like Heyward (known as a solid defender) who also brings a solid bat, OBP and speed on the basepaths.
