wopphil got a reaction from Crampknees in Good Times in Ukraine and Russia
And further, why are you bothered by Hunter Biden’s potentially shady dealings in Ukraine, but unfazed by the fact that the former U.S. President attempted to hold foreign aid hostage in exchange for receiving political dirt on his political opponent? If you can’t see the difference between the two, then you my friend are the one who can’t see the forest through the trees.

wopphil got a reaction from Angel Oracle in Angels interested in Eovaldi and Kluber
I think my preference is Kluber. Should be cheaper, no loss of a draft pick, and perhaps less of a health risk. But Eovaldi, if healthy, offers much more upside.

I think they'll sign a SP. We have 5 good ones, but considering we intend to use 6, our depth can thin out fairly quickly with an injury or two. If we assume Silseth takes the 6th spot, then our depth is Canning (injury concerns/unknown), Davis (??), CRod (probably a reliever, huge injury concerns), and .. Bush? Davidson? Diaz? Rosenberg?
If we sign one of the remaining SP options, then that pushes everyone down one, which is probably needed for depth purposes.

wopphil reacted to Docwaukee in Angels sign Brandon Drury (2 years, $17 million), DFA Oliver Ortega
They also take about 1500 plate appearances from the group that produced -7.0 WAR last year.
WAR costs 10m per. probably more now as I haven't seen the calc in awhile. You get half of that -7.0 taken away plus the 5 ish they're projected for and you're getting around 8 wins by adding those guys. Conservatively. That's the impact of depth for this team. It doesn't work like that for every team but when you have almost no position players in the upper minors who could step in and capably fill a spot with 0-1 wins, it's a huge delta. Would you spend 30m a year for 8 wins?

I'd have preferred Profar but I love the mentality. Just hope he doesn't become the 2019 version. Even if he does, he's better than the the likelihood of significantly sub replacement production we'd be looking at without him.
The number everyone should focus on is 2,571.
That's the number of plate appearances for players with ZERO war or worse on the angels last year.
The other number is -7.0
That the total WAR of those players.
It might seem like redundancy and it might seem like there's not enough AB to go around but if Urshela and Renfroe and Drury get 724 PA's each (the most in the majors last year from Marcus Semian), there would still be 400 additional plate appearances left. So in real terms, those three getting about 502 PA (minimum for a qualified hitter) leaves over 1000 still for someone else. Granted, a hefty chunk of those are from C but even conservatively it's at least enough for one more player to get the min. qualified.
Who do you want filling those 500 additional plate appearances? Soto? Adell? Moniak? Thaiss? Wallach? Mike Stefanic? Jordyn Adams? Andrew Velazquez? Jared Oliva? Ryan Aguilar? Aaron Whitfield? Jeremiah Jackson? Riley Unroe? Orlando Martinez? Bryce Teodosio?
Because that's about the list of next up.
So I can make a very strong argument that they shouldn't be done adding position players and I would very much like to see a legit 4th OFer.

I had a feeling this was coming, even though I'm not crazy about Drury. I'm still slightly confused as to what the overall strategy is at this point, as the Angels continue to deepen the roster, but they're now at the point of creating redundancies. With this signing, plus the Urshela deal, and the continued presence of Rengifo and Fletcher, there's not really enough ABs to go around for everyone. I get that you want to prepare for the worst, but I'm still concerned that while the "floor has been raised," the ceiling really hasn't been.

I’d be okay with Andrus if the contract doesn’t exceed 1/8. I also think Eovaldi would be a good addition.

I could also get behind another pitching heavy draft as @Second Base points out there’s no better capital in baseball than quality, cost controlled pitching.

I am surprised with how quiet Perry has been the last two weeks. He can’t be finished - this team is improved, but not enough.

Testing our technology is better in low risk situations where our people just collect data instead of retaliatory strikes. These proxy wars get to use our missile and anti missile tech along with satellite observation and field tactics without having to engage our troops. We learn a lot about our enemies and their strengths and weaknesses this way. We also learn about our allies readiness as well.

I am on board with bringing Lorenzen back. He was decent last year, and finished the year very strong. While I’d love to see a top of the rotation arm brought in, I think the money would be better used on Lorenzen and a shortstop.

Absolutely. One more starter, one more pen piece, and a shortstop.

That’s absurd money for Judge. I realize last year was historic and he is an excellent player. But he also has an injury history and is on the wrong side of 30. I don’t see this contract aging well.

This is very true. It certainly applies to my thinking. But that being said, while we have much better depth than in years’ past, it is almost all unproven.
