Pancake Bear got a reaction from Vegas Halo Fan in 7 Stages of Grief
I said a week or two ago that the numbers being reported were crazy. I wanted him back, but $700m for a guy who is about to turn 30 during this next season and has already had two major elbow surgeries is bananas. Dodgers and Mets can afford that, but I doubt anyone else could. If we paid him that much, I would've said I don't see how that helps us since he's just a DH this season and we have no money for anything else.
I hope he does well, because Shohei is the goat, but I suspect the Dodgers will regret the contract. But it doesn't bother me especially since I don't have any obnoxious Dodger fans for friends and we rarely play them.

Pancake Bear got a reaction from Chuck in Morosi reporting that Ohtani is on a plane to Toronto (Update: Now debunked by other sources)
I've been away with my family all day so I haven't been able to comment on today's craziness, but I've been following Twitter through it all.
I just have to say, I don't see any world in which Ohtani goes to Toronto. It didn't make the slightest sense to me before today and if he was leaning that way before, I have to think today killed any interest he might have had in going there.
Dude insists on privacy. Anaheim media gives him that. The Angels do not force him to do anything he doesn't want to. Even in LA that probably won't fly, but Toronto? Would be as bad as the Yankees. He'd be under a microscope constantly and if he was as media shy as he is here, he'd be crucified for it. Toronto media is insane.
And all the flight tracking lunacy? This is the guy who said he'd hold it against any team that made the process public. You could say the Jays front office had nothing to do with today, but you think Ohtani will care about that?
IMO, if the finalists are Toronto, Dodgers, and Angels, he's coming back. If he leaves, it'll be for some place like Chicago or Atlanta that no one is taking about because they followed the damn rules.

He said "he recently passed by the stadium, and their were four cars there, like something was going on." ........(Probably it was Ohtani, his agent, and a couple of others  who stopped to use the restroom, and collect any remaining items from Ohtani's locker before heading to the airport  for an overnight flight to Boston.)

Still thinking it's going to be SF, but I'm in a good spot. If he leaves, he leaves and if he stays, he stays.
I don't expect the Angels will win with him or without him.

It will be tomorrow. Ohtani will be announced as returning to the Angels for around $550m over a 12 year contract. Probably announced earlier rather than later.

You guys are massively overrating what it will cost to acquire Glasnow and Bieber. Both have injuries and limited innings that limit their value. Also, for one year, they're not going to cost a gigantic amount. Taylor Ward or Luis Rengifo probably functions as the primary piece (with maybe a small throw in) that gets you either one assuming the Rays or Guardians front office likes either of those guys.
Burnes will cost quite a bit more because he's been very good, even with only a year. You'd had to lead with someone like Detmers to get him unless they really did go with a wacky Yelich and Burnes deal, in which case the return would be considerably less.
Cease would also be quite expensive, which is probably why we haven't been linked as much with him. At least Burnes might extend with us since he grew up an Angels fan.

Worth pointing out, though, that Ward's is based on a really good 2022, followed by a barely above league average 2023 which concluded with a significant injury. Before 2022, Ward was that same slightly-better-than-league-average player or worse. Arozarena had an amazing 2020 (only 23 games, though) followed by 3 full of seasons of a consistent 125ish wRC+. Ward *could* be around there, but calling Arozarena a fraction better feels extremely generous to Ward until he proves he can rebound to that level.

I'd chalk Wash's comments off to poor wording except he literally doubled down when the phrasing was questioned and had a grin on his face. Seems meaningful.

Anderson even said that the analytics department mandated a change from how he had pitched the season before with the Dodgers when he had an all star season. That people think coaching has no effect on results is trippy.

Yeah, I hear you. I guess I'm more bullish on Ward's upside with the bat. He struggled early on in 2023, but then found his groove and was mashing for the last couple months or so. Meaning, it depends upon who you think the "real" Ward is. I think we haven't really seen a consistent season from him, due to injuries. And that might be the problem: like Trout, he seems prone to them. But if he manages a healthy season, I see a 140-150 wRC+.

I still think they should hold onto Anderson, unless they absolutely need to clear that salary or there’s a trade that needs money cleansed from both sides. The money committed isn’t terrible, he’s the vet of the staff, a new pitching coach might help, and he can eat blowout innings at the very least and we do have some thinness in the back of the rotation/mop-up with Barria, Diaz, potentially Suarez, etc. out. It’d be selling really low. I don’t expect him to ever approach his 2022 line, but if he for some reason lucks into a 3.50-4 ERA in the first dozen or so starts, you may be able to actually pawn him off without eating money or getting something decent back.

Ok. Then think of it like this. We made those trades and it didn’t work out and we finished the season with all of them on the team. Now we are stuck with the same situation without the prospects.  We would have an end of the 4th round comp pick for losing Shohei instead of an end of the 2nd round comp pick.  We would also lose international draft money for finishing above the tax threshold.  If you don’t see where we stand now is a positive over where we would have been if we kept all of those players till the end of the season, then I don’t really know what to tell you.  It really isn’t a difficult concept at all.
