eligrba got a reaction from Dick B Back in Angels DFA Jonathan Lucroy
F'n Eppler should have traded Lucroy to the Cubs knowing they would need a catcher after the deadline. If he was a good GM he would have.

eligrba got a reaction from BattleBorn in Time to Abandon the Opener
The Angels are only competing for a draft position at this point. F*ck the opener and the fear of "third time through the lineup" and let the kids pitch, let the coaches coach and hopefully someone can figure how to use a 2 strike count to the pitcher's advantage..
Just play some old school baseball for the rest of the year. I think every pitchers goal should be to learn how to get through the lineup three times because it opens up more opportunities and expands their repertoire. F*ck the stats......the remaining part of the season should focus on the young pitchers learning how to be successful at the major league level.

But wouldn't the Cubs still need a catcher?

...or 1.0 WAR if you look at Baseball-Reference, as I've noted elsewhere. And I'll again ask why, if he's so valuable, did the Astros twice make moves to trade for another "defense-first" catcher to replace him? (Side note: I still don't care about him one way or the other...I just think anyone expecting any sort of real contribution from him is probably going to be disappointed)

Fyi-Those outfield placement cards were crucial when I was playing whiffle ball.

eligrba got a reaction from 2112 in Gameday Thread: 8/6 Angels @ Reds: Suarez starting
I would rather have Suarez pitching than Cahill or Harvey, Obviously he has some things to work on and it is on the coaching staff to help him improve. I do not think just any 21 year old can pitch in the majors so he must have some upside.

21 years old and all of 9+ major league games, but are we sure Suarez is any good?

I’m old school and I can’t stand the opener. I miss the days of complete game pitchers, complete no hitters by the starter, 200 plus innings guys, 200 plus K’s, 20 game winners. The game has changed so much but not all for the better. These pitching changes make me appreciate guys like Ryan, Drysdale, JR Richards, Valenzuela, Langston and many many more. Give me 7-8 innings and bring in a setup guy and then a fireball closer. That’s the way I remember it. This opener stuff may be strategic but it makes them all look soft.
