HaloBronco reacted to Swordsman78 in Angels select SS Zach Neto 13th overall in the 1st round of the 2022 MLB Draft
Looks like a very solid pick.   The Angels went all in on pitching last year and some of those guys will have a chance to make the bigs in a year or so.   Solid position players may have a quicker path and be ready to contribute sooner.  The Angels definitely had a need at SS and they got the best available guy.
I'll take this guy over a $160,000,000 32 yr old ex all star SS solidly locked onto his downward glide path and multiple injury ridden seasons.

There's not one weakest link in this organization, and they all need to go.
A decade is enough time to determine they don't know what they're doing.
Basic baseball fundamentals need to be ingrained into this team, and they haven't been for a while.
As the relief pitcher, again, as usual, walks the first batter he sees...

I haven't felt this grim about the Angels in several years, so even the optimist in me doesn't really believe much anymore this year, but, I will say that any team that has two (technically three since Shohei counts twice) players like Ohtani and Trout has a really strong floor to build on if those two take off.
Adell, Marsh, and Detmers have enough potential that if any one or combo of them found their stride, things could shift quickly. They've had a tough schedule of late. There are more playoff spots. Walsh has underperformed, the bullpen shouldn't be this bad, Suarez has started coming around, Fletcher, Rengifo and Stefanic might take away more of the playing time Velazquez and Wade had...they'd need a lot to break right but the talent is there.
If Minasian is able to turn Syndergaard into an MLB-ready piece or two (I saw one idea floated of sending him to the Mets for Dominic Smith who isn't a savior but if he found his stroke could contribute) I guess there's a chance they go on a run. They played alright last year after the deadline.

Yep. This is one of the many baffling things about this season. To be fair, Stefanic got hurt when it would have made sense to call him up, Adell hasn't wowed in AAA, and Rengifo has been playing regularly since then. But still, as you say, I'd rather see the guys with a future struggle, then the Mayfields and Lagareses of the world.
I suppose the Angels were stuck on the idea of Proven Veterans. I guess.
Anyhow, clearly they've shifted to "playing for next year" mode, so we're probably done with Mayfield, Wade, Lagares, etc.

I agree with you, Scotty, and would add Stefanic to the mix. I think both and Rengifo should be starting nearly every day so the Angels can assess what they have. If Stefanic continues his hitting and can field an adequate 2B, and Rengifo continues improving and can field SS, then next year they don't have to spend big on a free agent middle infielder, but can instead focus on depth and go with Rengifo/Stefanic, Fletcher and one or two free agents on the bench.
If the Angels don't feel confident in one of them, they can go big and after someone like Trea Turner.
As far as the outfield next year, if they don't trade Ward, I think they can try what they were presumably going to do at some point this year: a four-way platoon. People are calling in the end of Marsh's career too quickly; this is a guy who had almost no time in AAA -- 108 PA last year, and that's it -- and still has the talent to be a very good player. There's no reason he can't get plenty of time filling in for the other three, and getting his own share of starts.
Remember, 162 x 3 = 484 starts in the OF, or an average of 121.5 GS for four players. I'd much rather see the Angels give those starts to Trout, Ward, Adell, and Marsh - and not Lagares/Thomas/Harrison/etc. Add in a few starts at DH, 1B, and coming in late, and they all should average 130 games played. And then adjust for injury, and pretty much all four can be full-time players when healthy.

To clarify, I meant trading Trout is a no-win situation for the Angels. Keeping him is the best option, even through his Pujols years.

I'm reminded of Tim Salmon, who was part of the 2002 WS winners at age 33, and in decline. The point being, I don't think it matters whether the Angels win with Trout in his prime or not. It is important they win - and that Trout is around to be part of it.

Career decline happens to everyone at some point.
It could be slow and incremental or sudden.
Trout should still be in or very close to his prime. And probably is just in an adjustment phase of his career.
Pro athletes careers are based on challenges and responses. And health. The athletic body is fragile and prone to all sorts of issues. And  time exacerbates bodily flaws and weaknesses.
Even without major damage via serious injuries, skills don't remain at their peak indefinitely. Vision, reflexes, hand eye co-ordination, speed decline over time even when otherwise healthy.
One of the challenges is trying to stay in the best shape possible and postpone damage. As well recuperation is more complicated after years of wear and tear.
Trout is nowhere near as jinxed and cursed as Mantle was physically over his career. And the Mick managed to play almost two fully productive decades. As well medicine and training are light years better than they we're back then.
But Trout has put in a hard, physical decade of wear and tear. Expecting MVP standards forever is optimistic. And unrealistic. A decade of being top two and no worse than fifth in MVP voting is crazy! Far beyond all but a handful of the most elite in history.
The series against Seattle could have been the last outburst of a super nova beginning it's inevitable fade. Or this current slump may be a short term thing that is quickly fixed and forgotten. We won't know till more time passes. I would expect a nice recovery, but not necessarily to MVP standards.
As well, there is the mental side of an elite athlete trying to deal with emerging problems he rarely had to deal with before.
The rest of the season will show how Trout responds to his challenges.

    Let this sink in.
If Ohtani had two more innings pitched, he’d currently qualify for the AL ERA and WHIP leaderboards, top 5 in both.
Oh, and just for kicks, 18 HRs and 53 rbis with an .840 OPS

What happens on the field, isn’t going to make or break my day. I enjoy seeing them win, but I know winning is hard and winning it all is even harder.
    It's just baseball.

Part of the offensive problem is they don't try to manufacture runs and put pressure on the defense by Hit and run, bunts, steals etc.   They are sitting back and relying on home runs, hence the HR swing with two strikes and inevitable multiple "K's".
They have pretty good team speed, although not as fast as the Royals.
The starters need to get into the 7th inning.
The Angels just need to put more balls in play and when a guy gets on base, move him into scoring position.
On another note, the 1964 Phillies lost a 6.5 game lead with 12 games left to lose the pennant, so there is still plenty of time to make the playoffs.   Alot can happen between now and Sept.   So. Don't. panic

Lots of good observations on the big picture and the organizational problems.
Pitching has been average at best, not good enough to get on long winning streaks. Rarely do the starters and bullpen combine for a strong game. And even when they do like yesterday, the hitters failed.
Defense and base running are below average and at times pathetic. That seems to reflect lack of confidence, poor communication and preparation. There is some quality defensive skill in certain players, but there is lack of concentration at times and poor teamwork.
On a game by game basis, there is too much dependence on Trout and Ohtani, hoping they could compensate for a mostly minor league batting order around them. Four spots for sure. Two others respectable.
Ward is  a positive story on a limited basis, and to be determined longer term. And Walsh maybe just reverting to his normal 'ok' form rather than all star consistency. Not as clutch as last year with runners in scoring position. And again reverting to difficulty against lefties.
But the mix of the others is bad, no matter how they mix and match.
Rendon did make a difference overall when he actually was playing.  But that has been infrequently. And he  still was nowhere near what was expected when signed.
Even with those five in the lineup that still leaves four minor league hitters following them. Five now that Rendon will be out all year.
Yesterday in the ninth typifies things. They walked Trout and Ohtani. Miami felt more comfortable with the bases loaded than giving the two stars a chance. Ward at least produced a run, but didn't have the key hit. A moment later the game is over and another loss.
Another factor with this wretched losing spell is that Trout and Ohtani (as a hitter) are not having MVP type seasons. All star probably, but below their best. If one of them doesn't have an awesome game, winning is seriously problematic.
If they had elite (or even above average) pitching/defense they possibly could finesse enough wins to be around  .500 on the fringe of contention. But they don't and the results speak for themselves.

i really don't think a new gm is the answer. it doesn't appear, to me, that what perry is doing is the problem. i think it's what he's not funded to do that is the problem. i don't think anybody here criticized the moves perry made in FA or even his draft.  his moves appear to be strong in both areas, but there's something wrong on a deeper level with this franchise. it has to be something functionally restrictive coming from arte and carpino having to do with scouts of all varieties and their business approach to both the international and minor league market. how many gm's, managers, and coaches do we have to go through before it's self evident the problem doesn't lie in those areas?

This is exactly how I see him at this time. Plus let's not forget he's an excellent defensive first baseman.
He's probably the best defensive first baseman they've had since Joyner, JT Snow or Erstad.
Hopefully he'll make adjustments and become a more impactful bat but at this point he's solid to good contributor.

With an incredible June after a meh April and May for Ohtani standards, he's put himself in contention for another MVP race as we head toward summer.
His competition this season isn't just Vladimir Guerrero Jr. as it was in 2021, but he's got Devers, Judge, Ramirez and his own teammate Mike Trout to contend with. The above is his fWAR from Fangraphs, here's his bWAR:

What Ohtani is doing on the mound and at the plate of late, if he keeps this up he's an unanimous AL MVP again despite the larger field of candidates having good seasons.

Yeah, I tend to agree with you, at least as far as him truly blossoming. If he gets his walk rate to around 10%, he's not going to be just "a player" but a good one. I think what we've seen over the last couple weeks is him transforming from scrub to solid player. The next step will require that walk rate going up.
Yep. He's always had the look of a good player, in a not dissimilar way to Marsh looking like he should be good. I suppose in both cases it was/is a matter of loose ends needing to be worked out.

I’ve had several conversations with Angels coaches and front office people about how Rengifo has much more talent than all of the other middle infielders (Fletcher included). He just hasn’t been able to put it together.
