goldenGlove reacted to Taylor in The Billy Eppler appreciation thread
Perhaps his death is causing you to remember him more fondly.
I remember him being an automatic out, every single day. He'd go on a tear where he'd hit like 5 HR in a week, and then he'd go back to hitting .150.

Glad he's listed at number two.. Angels have done okay with the the last two guys ranked second overall.... Shohei Ohtani and Michael Nelson Trout.

Hey what’s up man, how are you. I’m just curious why the amount bothers you so much, when Eppler came out and said they stretched the budget specifically for Allen. He was the last piece added, it was going to be the roster as it is with Allen or the roster as it is without Allen; but it’s not like his salary prevented us from picking up someone else because we were suddenly out of budget.
could the $$ have been better spent? Obviously- you listed a few. But you’re not even concerned that he tried and missed, you seem pretty understanding of that. So I’m just wondering why the amount bothers you when it didn’t affect anything else?
also, I think the amount of bullpen gems Eppler has found for nothing allows him some understanding in some more expensive gambles not paying off.

This was such a good take. People seem to make a big deal of the misses, while ignoring the hits. Kind of how people make a big deal out of his punting on Parker but gloss over the fact he kept him for his two cheaper, better years.

goldenGlove reacted to Second Base in Canning
Griffin Canning is what happens when a team invests in pitching, developes it and gets lucky. They invested a high draft pick on him, something they should've been doing the last two years but for some reason haven't. They developed him and saw his arsenal reach an entirely different level. And they've gotten lucky. What was a mid to back end starter in college became a mid rotation starter as he developed in the minors and now that he's in the majors, he's looking more like a front to mid rotation starter.
Now all we need is Ohtani healthy, and a fully developed Chris Rodriguez and Jose Soriano. If that happens, the Angels will not lose many games. Not with an offense featuring Trout, Adell, Marsh, Ohtani....not with an Eppler built bullpen.
The Angels are going to start winning a lot of games in 2020, but come 2022, they're going to be the elite team in the AL. I hope to see a lot of Angels vs Padres World Series matchups next decade.
