ScruffytheJanitor reacted to Jeff Fletcher in How to view the Angels present and future
Again, Shoemaker has had one injury that cost him the past two years.
Otherwise, he had a strained oblique that cost him about 2 weeks in 2014, and he got hit in the head by a line drive.
Also, players who are actually injury prone don’t stay any healthier when going to the bullpen. You are just trading one kind of arm stress for another.

ScruffytheJanitor reacted to Jeff Fletcher in Will the Angels try for a 6-man rotation again?
A six-man rotation doesn’t really mean “six starters pitching in order.” It means, “when possible, we’d like our starters to pitch on five days rest instead of four.”
Eppler said specifically they’d still like to do that sometimes, strategically.
Whether you want to call that a “six-man rotation” or not is a matter of semantics.

I heard Corbin wants to be a Yankee. But if that’s not true, I think it’s possible he’s a target.
I wouldn’t worry about sending messages to Trout. That whole idea is overblown. You can send him about 400 million messages that will be more significant.

$30 million.
Thats approximately how much payroll the Angels can add. If you want to do things like non-tender Matt Shoemaker ($5M) or JC Ramírez ($2-3M), you can increase that.
Also, that’s real payroll, not AAV. If you wanna sign Dallas Keuchel for 4/80, but only pay him $15m in 19, count it as 15.
I think they need...
1 durable SP
1 starting C
1 or 2 infielders, at least one of whom is an everyday player. One of them has to be able to play 1B. If there’s another, he plays 2B or 3B.
1 4th OF who can play all 3 spots and is good enough to start (if Calhoun needs to be benched).
Any optionable relievers they can find in minor trades or on the waiver wire.
I think I might use my one trade bullet on JT Realmuto and go FA/waivers for the rest.

ScruffytheJanitor reacted to Troll Daddy in The official (slightly early) off season discussion thread. Let's hear your plan.
1. One legit top of the rotation starter
2. One MOTO bat preferably 3B
3. Catcher

If I was a mod I'd ban Troll Daddy and then immediately surrender my mod powers.

ScruffytheJanitor reacted to UndertheHalo in Angels sign Cuban IFer Roberto Baldoquin
I’m not trying to be a dick but it’s kind of funny. I’m trying to figure out whether Scotty’s analysis on Kyle Kubitza was worse or this.

you should probably stick to minor league baseball

I want to remind you guys for this discussion that Matt Shoemaker is set to make about $5M in arbitration next year.
Carry on...

How does Barria, arguably the most consistent pitcher on the staff not have a spot on the mlb roster?

ScruffytheJanitor reacted to totdprods in Starting Pitcher Trade Targets
The 5th SP (Tropeano, Despaigne, McGuire, Lamb, J.C. Ramirez, Noe Ramirez, Johnson, Cole, Bridwell):
32 GS, 122 IP, 9.2 K/9, 2.30 WHIP, 6.88 ERA
In addition...
Skaggs and Shoemaker combined for one starter's worth of games (31) and Tyler ended the year making only a half-dozen starts due to injury, and they were awful.
Barria will be a 22-year old and his peripherals could normalize. Most SPs tend to struggle a bit in their 2nd/3rd years. And he'll be pitching more than normal.
Felix Pena was our next best starter, and Ramirez and Bridwell both had arm injuries after being converted to SP.
As badly as we need an ace, we once again could greatly benefit from someone capable of putting up 180 innings of average ball.

It's tough because we have so many number 3 and 4 guys and that's realistically all we could get without destroying our farm system.
I'm all for deGrom but that conversation starts with Adell and Canning and doesn't end there. We certainly have a solid system now but not nearly enough depth to soften the blow of a big time trade.
The only guy I'd consider completely decimating our farm system for is Walker Buehler, but I don't see the Dodgers trading him.
We could make Simmons available and get a frontline-type starter, but that's risky and creates another hole.
We're in a tough spot, pitching wise. I say we go with what we've got and just go all-in with the offense. At least for 2019. F*ck it. Sign Harper and Grandal.

ScruffytheJanitor reacted to Docwaukee in Question regarding Pujols
@Dtwncbad
deferred contracts exist. money can be deferred but that deferral counts proportionately to the CBT. you can't defer the tax number.
To calculate the CBT number, the total amount of money the player is paid is averaged over the number of years of that contract.
Take a look at Scherzer's contract. he got 10m in 2015, 15m from 16-18 and will get 35m from 19-21. He then gets 15m per year from 2022-2028 when the contract ends but that money is included in the first 7 years of the deal when figuring the CBT number.
Because of that deferred money, the present day value of the contract was actually closer to 190m as opposed to 210m. So his tax hit was 190/7 or a little over 27mil per.
So whatever deal they work with pujols, their CBT hit will be 72mil over the next three years.

Honestly, I can't either. Everyone talks about Bobby Bonilla but I can't think of any recent example.
The famous A-Rod "buyout" was really just a nice PR spin on releasing him and still paying him all the money anyway.

ScruffytheJanitor got a reaction from Angel Oracle in Dipotoed
Told to rebuild his barn, DiPoto went off to buy supplies and ended up trading his kids for a busted up Yugo and a vigorous case of herpes. He blamed it all on his wife and moved to the next county over to repeat the process.
