TroutField reacted to totdprods in So, still don’t see how things are any different.
I know it’s counterintuitive but I still think they should have rolled the dice on trading one or two of Ward, Sandoval, Rengifo, and Suarez last deadline when it was a great market for sellers. Yes, all of those guys looked like key pieces for the future and are the type you build around, but teams were paying up well for controllable talent and we really have a quantity more than quality problem when it comes to that tier of young depth, if for nothing more than breaking up some of the roster inflexibility that optionless Suarez and a Rengifo cause. It’s what smart teams do, cash in on some of this young talent via trade when the opportunity is there. Marsh and O’Hoppe is a good example, and yeah, Logan got hurt and Marsh is mashing, but still a good trade.
It wouldn’t have been a ‘win now’ move, but we could have supplemented via FA just as we did.
Ignoring the pen was really, really bad.

Trout becoming more famous for his big spot failures than anything positive he’s done.

Throw trout, ward and even Ohtani in there. So many opportunities to win it with the right guys at the plate and they don’t do shit.
can’t even come through agains the A’s pitching. I can’t wait until we play Texas and Houston.
trying not to get too down after this bullshit but this pitching is so bad that if something doesn’t change quickly we might be way out of the AL West race early summer…

this semen gargler should've been taken out after his walk in the 9th and yet here we are 5 runs later.

It was obvious he should've been pulled after the first homer. Instead he'll get like 10 more starts and we'll wonder why we missed the playoffs when we lose 9 of those starts

What is so hypocritical about talking to you in a language you seem to understand? Enjoy the scones.

And I brought facts and you played it off with a dismissive insult. You and Swordsman should get together for scones one days and talk about how it never rains in SoCal.

Howie Kendrick was the same. The homerun power never really developed, but man the guy could drive double into the gap with the best of them .

The thing is, almost all of baseball has trended that way. And who knows, maybe it makes more sense? (I have no idea).
But we're seeing what that line of thinking has led to.... and it sucks.
Maybe the new way is more efficient. Maybe it actually works better. But it doesn't seem like it...
GA was always underrated because he didn't walk a lot. But damn if that guy didn't come through a lot with gap hits when people were on.
Side note, I'm a huge fan of guys who hit lots of doubles. And GA was a doubles machine.

So obviously sabermetrics has shown that RBI is a poor stat to gauge players by. And I still agree with that.
Still...
I think what happened was when the argument was made (and proven) that its a poor stat to value hitters by, people may have gone overboard and decided its a "useless" stat. (At least some people).
But watching this team, recently and in years past, there's something to be said about guys who come through with runners on. It's really frustrating watching this team waste those opportunities.
I'll add here that AVG has been downplayed the past two decades, and I get why (same as the RBI debate). But again, there's something to be said about guys who put the ball in play (and not make an out).
I dunno. I'd just like to see this team get some higher average guys who can drive runners home. Maybe it's the same as every other team, who knows. But this gets frustrating.

You’re making claims based on nothing… literally making shit up out of thing air. so…
where was I wrong? For wishing we had Iglesias as an option in the bullpen when he comes back? You guys have no argument and just because 3 of the same people that always jump into the argument are against me doesn’t mean I’m wrong. Not to mention it’s the 3 posters with the same old tired “im a better fan than you because I think I know better” rhetoric
we have 7 losses on the bullpen so far and we have nothing but minor league prospects with 0 major league experience as our bullpen depth. How would getting our closer back in a couple weeks to supplement the weak bullpen not be a good thing?
so strange

There's always a positive spin, or at least a less negative one. And fans have a hard time looking at their own team objectively.
But...the frustration many (including myself) feel is real and legitimate - and totally understandable. The team isn't terrible, but after a very promising spring and a team that looked nicely refurbished, we're 10-11, a very typical Angels record. Early on the team was losing games that they seemingly should have won, more recently it seems they're just losing games because they're not that good. All along, the bullpen has been typically sub-par and the offense has been disappointing.
I think two things are true, though:
1) It is quite understandable to be frustrated, and there's no shame in it.
2) They're only 10-11, not 6-15, and there's a lot of baseball to be played.
Losing O'Hoppe is bad, maybe really bad. It isn't just his performance, but the fact that the pitchers like working with him.

How do you know they didn’t disclose it? Maybe they felt his shoulder was a potential problem, or maybe they needed to improve the team by using the $$ for depth—or both..
I’m just saying, you’re making claims based on conjecture and emotion—which is understandable; but you can at least own up to being wrong: that’s the reason people call you out.

If you don't look at previous seasons, then on what are you basing your feeling that the team will start executing better, since that hasn't happened this year so far? You can't have it both ways.
In my opinion, situational hitting and the bullpen are the biggest issues now and moving forward. While the overall numbers for the 'pen are pretty good, they're blowing things when it matters most.
