  1. Funny some of the comments. If we made a swap of 2 marginal players (one of whom may be a reasonable bullpen piece) and received Fletcher and Stassi, who both increase the payroll, this thread would be white hot nuclear.

Not unusual, most fans overvalue their own team’s players, especially those that are likeable.

Minasian secured a guy he wanted in place and it sounds like they are creating an innovative new position, whether in the dugout or like an offensive coordinator calling plays in from the booth.

Seems to me this position could be partly used to teach, highlight and implement situational hitting principles and base running strategy. It seems to me that the last couple of years we have left a lot of runs on the table.

Will Wilson is who you are thinking about.

A lot of Eppler's moves those first three years were about adding upside to a system that completely lacked it.  It's partially why they focused on so many guys at the extreme end of the age pool in the draft - college players tend to be safer but don't always have the upsides.  They also had to basically recreate the international scouting department when he got here -- it was a real clusterfuck.

Things are better now but the Latin American market is still probably the best place to take risks on guys with pop up talent just because how much cheaper they can be.  So even if Minasian were to swing and miss, I'd give him a pass in that area.  Hell, I'd have given JD a pass..  bust mostly he just traded off international trade money or let it sit idle.

Thanks for the Will Wilson callback.

  4. A couple more thoughts on the Eppler/Minasian comparison…

    1. It’s still early, but it seems like some of the international prospects that Perry brought on have shown some promise. I feel like Epper whiffed on international guys. I’m sure he won’t be signing players from the Bahamas anymore.

    2. If Eppler was still GM, would Marsh have been traded for O’Hoppe? Billy seemed pretty attached to his higher level draftees. And the 1st rounder (I can’t remember his name) that they traded to the Giants was ridiculous. Especially since pitching was a much bigger need than an infielder.  Now, Minasian may become enamored with his draftees as well but he seems more calculating than Eppler was.

Tim Salmon’s name has come up as a potential interviewee…

Salmon was before my time watching the Angels, so I’d be interesting in hearing thoughts about him from those who did see him play.

From my view, just seeing him on TV, and looking back at his career, it seems like he’s more like Trout. A relaxed, calm personality rather than a fiery guy.

    Is that right or wrong?

I always thought Salmon was a guy who did his business. Not the type to display a lot of emotion. It wasn’t until the 2002 WS that I saw he could show some emotion.

I would love for it to be Hunter. Experience doesn’t matter as long as Arte is around anyway. I think Hunter would have lit up Rendon for how he acted

And Hunter played for two great coaches. Tom Kelly and Mike Sciocsia. Both were big on fundamentals, playing smart baseball, and holding players accountable.  Would definitely choose him and take a chance rather than hiring a retread.

Yeah, let’s scoop up a guy who the Nationals didn’t want to keep around as a 3B coach.

Not sure why you are against this. The only criteria that some rely on is former Angels player. A fired 3B coach or former college manager, who both would never be considered by another team, are prime Angel Manager candidates.

I didn’t say “no fault”. I said he didn’t do a good job and helping the pitchers perform better. It wasn’t ALL his fault though. Some of the pitchers were just turds.

    I’ll go with that. Thanks.

They weren’t his fault but he didn’t do a good enough job to correct the issues and get the pitching staff to perform better.

Not sure you can say there was no fault on Wise’s part. Sandoval, Dietmers, and Barria regressed, the bullpen decisions didn’t often make sense, and there was little development that I noticed.

I mean, did anyone think that Wise earned another year?

  10. The more I think about it, Showalter makes the most sense. He should be a good influence on the younger players and I would assume that he’s got good connections to better hitting and pitching coaches than we’ve had in years past. However, given his age and propensity to get fired, it would also be good to have a younger coach who he can develop to eventually manage the team. I would think he’s mature enough to realize the value of that.

If nothing else, he is still very much respected in the game and has shown he can work with younger talent.

(I almost typed that he would “groom” a younger coach but in this day and age that would hold an entirely different meaning).

I take no pleasure is presenting this information that paints a very dismal picture of the person Arte hired as GM. Who, sadly, as this information bears out, has been a glaring misstep & one that any competent owner would not allow to be part of the way forward...

Funny, but Minasian is tied with Andrew Friedman at 22nd place.  Easy to look in hindsight, but I remember the board was pretty satisfied with the offseason moves.

I have to tell you that when I first read your post I thought Minasian was a serial sexual harasser or liked to kick dogs.

Given Perry's background...those would likely include Valentine & if the Mets fire him...Schowalter...

I was told that Bobby V is very close to Minasian. It actually would have made sense to give him the job for 2023 because, 1) it’s hard to see him being worse than Nevin, and 2) Bobby V is a legend in Japan and, if the Angels were competitive, could have helped to sway Ohtani to staying.

If Arte fires Minasian it will set the club back another four year cycle. That is how long it takes for any GM to make a real change in the way the organization runs.

Minasian has created change from the minor leagues working up. With support for his long term plan the Angels may be able to break the cycle of hiring half a team of free agents and actually create a cost effective roster.

But that requires Moreno to change with the GM instead of negating any moves by over spending on free agents while under budgeting the farm and analytics department. Moreno has to change, you can't buy championships. You have to build that team from the ground up.

I am very much in the “keep Minasian” camp. It seems to me that Minasian has more influence with Arte than DiPoto or Eppler did. Maybe he’s more aggressive (Eppler always seemed to be a “go along to get along guy).

He’s put together a good young core of players to build around. Would like to see him keep that going while going into another draft and waiting for some of the young international players to come up through the system.
