You build a winning organization through the farm system. Once you have a roster filled with quality players, and depth, then you can add a few high priced free agents to hopefully get you a championship. Look at the teams that have been consistently competing for a championship lately. That's the way its been done, other than the Rays that can skip the free agency part because their scouting, and development are unbelievable.
I've gotten to the point where if the Angels are going to win around 75 games letting the kids play, then fine. Trade Ohtani. Go into a full rebuild. Ask Trout if he's willing to go through that. If not, find out who he would waive his no trade to. They're stuck with Rendon. The only way they're getting rid of that IL machine is by DFA'ng him. Trade anyone else who's a free agent at the end of the season. Build around the young talent.
This. Exactly. I’m tired of the treadmill of trying to field a competitive team by paying a high price for free agents. Doesn’t work. They need to be final pieces, not the foundation. Invest in the farm and scouting rather than large salaries for guys over 30.
And, unless Arte wants to go big time in the front office, I am fine with Minasian. Nevin is done as far as I’m concerned. Even if he’s not at fault, we will easily end up under .500 during his tenure.

I mentioned it in the “15 Wins A Month” thread but it fits here too..
The Angels have all the reason in the world to make a push this deadline. Not only is it possibly Ohtani’s last season, but could be Perry’s, Nevin’s, even Arte’s, especially if they don’t make the playoffs. Perry’s job is likely on the line if he doesn’t get them there, and as close as they are and as aggressive as he’s been, I doubt he’s going to let a lot stand in his way - if he deals away youngsters, it either is his problem to figure out next year or the next guy’s. Arte might have a lot more openness on the tax and payroll. They’re gonna go all-in. It also helps with the PR narrative if they make the playoffs and Shohei still leaves.
Circling back to how I started this post, Texas and Houston aren’t in nearly the same make-or-break stakes as the Angels. The Rangers shouldn’t torpedo their youngsters in an attempt to stave off the Angels, they’ve got deGrom and Semien and Seager and others to support next year and in the near-term. They should recognize that they’re better off focusing on 2024-2026ish as their window instead of going all in for ‘23, competing against an urgent Angels. The Astros are depleted on their farm and fortunate to be playing as well as they have…like Texas, they might be better off playing it safe, hoping for the best, and focusing more on next year.
I don’t see any way that Minasian’s job is on the line. He’s made a number of good moves this year and added some actually productive players. We’ve seen Neto and O’Hoppe and their future looks promising. No real slappys on the team like last year. And, Minasian has been very aggressive in moving guys out that are not producing.
Injuries are what is killing this team. It would have been nice to see an extended period with a consistent lineup. Not sure how you prevent.
It’s sacrilege to say this, but as much as I love Ohtani, the Angels will never be a true playoff contender having to pay Ohtani/Trout/Rendon $120M. Too many other holes to fill to create a championship contender. We’ll just continue on the same treadmill we’ve been on since 2014. At some point a rebuild needs to be considered.

I think MLB of all the major sports has proven many times that you just have to make the playoffs to have a chance at the World Series. Look at the Braves two seasons ago, nobody picked them to win at the start of the playoffs, especially without Acuna. If the Angels get one more legit SP and a good RP, they not only have a chance, they might win the division and get a bye.
Or, you could be San Diego who traded a lot of draft capital over the past couple of years and is now 5 games under .500. Doesn’t mean they may not go on a hot streak, but they went from one of the top systems to number 23 (and if they trade the couple of players that made them 23 they will fall farther). I don’t see Quero and whoever else drawing enough for a legit SP and a good RP (who are always a risk).
It’s all a crapshoot. But you have to balance long term with short term. I’m glad I don’t make that decision.

I would think that Eppler’s seat is getting warmer and, if he’s back next year, he will have no room for error. He could start trading looking to the future, but I doubt Cohen wants that or that Eppler has that ability to identify and develop a strong farm system.
-
Would trading Quero and one or two other prospects really enhance our post season chances? Even if we make the playoffs we are not a threat to get to the World Series. I’m pessimistic that Shohei will re-sign. Given that, I would hold onto all our prospects and, if we want to trade them, do it in the Fall when, essentially, return would be greater. We could also use Shohei’s $30M to sign a pitcher. Adell and Moniak rotating at DH is not Shohei, but it could be serviceable.

Ron Washington has a different opinion regarding playing first base:

Do I have to pay an additional amount so that my Dodgers news is ad free as well?

Didn't you hear? Loup is going to pitch his way from now on, so he's going to be great again.
Absolutely. He’s thrown 47% fastballs at an average velocity of 91 mph. I’m sure that throwing 60% fastballs, at age 35, will do nothing but increase his average velocity and pitch location, and exit velocity for hitters.
-
-
I wouldn’t use a high pick for an OFer because they can easily be signed on the free agent market (i.e. Renfroe, Hunter). I’m really not worried about organizational outfield depth.
A good corner IF prospect is worth more to me.

To me, him throwing more fastballs will just result in even greater velocity being generated by hitters…

Looks like Arte would have to step in and tell Nevin to start Barria.
Joking
I knew right away you were joking because Arte is a big Davidson guy.

Suarez best numbers have always been in second half. I also thought he would better this year. Suarez is now gone so picking is thin with Silseth, Davidson and maybe Barria. Silseth I feel would be big help in BP. Any of the 3 pitch 4 inn tops and that kills bullpen. I know Ohtani has not pitched on four days rest, but I would approach him about it. In a season of must win to try and keep Ohtani all stops should at very least looked at.
I would like to see Barria get a chance at this slot. I’m not sure he could be much worse and Silseth right now is more valuable in the bullpen.
-
It’s ridiculous to blame the bullpen. If they would have scored 5 runs in 9 innings last night they would have won. Oh sure, blame the bullpen….

Barria's FIP is way worse than Davidson's. 4.18 for Barria, 2.58 for Davidson.
Barria's BABIP is .077 points lower than Davidson, so I'm not sure what you mean by saying it's "based on BABIP."
Another thing is, via the eye-test, Davidson has looked better. Ward robbed a grand slam that Barria would've otherwise given up. His stats would be much worse if that ball goes out.
Is there an advance stat that backs up that theory?

Going all in on Shohei keeps us on the treadmill we’ve been on the past decade. No prospects of any value to trade for areas of need, no money to fill holes with actual legit major leaguers.
For the first time in a long time there’s actual promise in the farm system. I would not blow it up to keep one player happy. I want us to be a real contender every year. Can’t do this on the course we are currently on. And, I bet that Perry believes that as well.

I’m in the camp of trading Ohtani and getting max haul. I feel that we are on the verge of having a very productive farm system and we need to start thinking long term. Shohei keeps us in short term thinking because the mentality is win now. His predicted $50M salary will limit our ability to fill holes in our lineup.
I would trade him for a prospect haul and use his $30M from this year to address a position of real need (which would probably be a pitcher).
It’s April and I’m already tired of the Shohei circus every day among “pundits”.

I'm sure it's a method of allowable roster manipulation. A few times, though, I've see guys head to AZ for a week for some actual instruction.
No doubt it’s manipulated but I like the idea of being able to take someone off a roster to work on a specific item(s). The idea of some one on one coaching for a week could really benefit some players. I don’t know if the rules allow this, but I would be rotating guys through the list all season.

Do people actually turn down the TV volume to listen to the game on radio? Are that many people affected by the delay? This seems like a bunch of handwringing over nothing.
I don’t know that if this happens, but if they can hire one more coach for minor league development instead of sending announcers on the road then I’m all for it.

FWIW, I went to high school with the Anaheim mayor. She grew up in Anaheim Hills and her family runs a fairly well known law firm in OC. I’d be surprised if they aren’t Angels fans. So I assume keeping the Angels here is a priority.
In the article the mayor says she has been a long time season ticket holder and a big Angels fan.

Sinclair is notorious for their carriage battles with cable, satellite, and live streamers. The really tend to over value their products and it was clear that they immediately looked to recoup their costs of acquisition of Bally from the carriers.
The stupidity was assuming they could effectively price a stand alone stream, especially since subscribers are more likely to not be fans of every team (i.e MLB, NBA, NHL teams) they carry.
Seems like they would be in a better financial position if they would have been carried by Dish, Frontier, YouTube Live, Hulu Live, and FUBO.

I read yesterday that Diamond is behind one payment to Arizona. There is a grace period and they expect to make that. Everyone else is current with their payment.
MLB is ready to take over if any more teams don’t receive payments. That part is interesting because I thought Bally/Diamond had contracts with individual teams and not MLB.

This. You can’t build a productive farm system based on only college players. They should end up with extra slot money, allowing them to sign some high school talent.
This is what you have to do in building a well rounded farm system.
