  1. That's a cop out when the fact is our elected officials aren't doing their jobs. Lock down the border, stop the handouts and don't blame the immigration system. Two wrong's don't make a right.
  2. Pretty sure there are legal ways to becoming a citizen only it takes time and they aren't legalizing millions every year so that doesn't work for the huddled masses who are told to come here. I know it isn't easy to get to stay here permanently as I have a cousin who had to leave the country after his wife who had her PHD had her work visa expire. The person at INS told them she would either have to leave the country or simply walk out the door and not come back. The system may be broke but it doesn't excuse the actions or in this case the in-action of the feds when it comes to locking down the border. Our country can't continue to print money and sell debt to finance it's actions and those actions shouldn't involve taking care of non-citizens.
  3. I'd be fine with that and I'm sure most others would too but it's a moot point until the feds actually lock down the border. Poor people from other countries aren't going to try and go through legal means when they have no money and no skills and they know that if they can make it across illegally there's opportunities and taxpayer money they can take advantage of.
  4. Times have changed a lot since 1883 as have the countries immigration policies and for good reason. My oldest recorded ancestor on my mom's side of the family came before the revolutionary war and was actually a part of it losing a hand. My dad's side of the family came here legally 50 years ago by going through the immigration process and had they not been able to they would have ended up likely in Australia because they wouldn't have come here illegally. I don't blame people that want to come here but our tax system and social programs have changed a lot and we can't afford to support the lowest of the low who are told to come here by their own politicians.
  5. I feel bad for the kids that are ending up at the border but this entire situation epitomizes why nothing seems to get done on the immigration front. There isn't going to be overwhelming support for amnesty or some giant overhaul when people keep ending up here illegally and the feds don't do their job. A few decades ago they gave amnesty which was supposed to be a one time deal and yet here we are again. We need to get our own house in order and take care of our own and let other countries handle their own problems.
  6. They have so many needs and yet I'd rather see them come away with nothing than sign Carmelo.
  7. I remember a few months ago some website ranked by % the chances of those going for the democratic and republication nominations in 2016. I died a little inside when I realized our choices may realistically (i.e. 3rd party has no shot) come down to a Clinton or Bush. Edit - Some quotes from Ginsburg's dissenting opinion. I'm pulling these from another board so if they're wrong or inaccurate let me know as I don't have time to read through her dissent right now: "It bears note in this regard that the cost of an IUD is nearly equivalent to a month's full-time pay for workers earning the minimum wage." "Would the exemption…extend to employers with religiously grounded objections to blood transfusions (Jehovah's Witnesses); antidepressants (Scientologists); medications derived from pigs, including anesthesia, intravenous fluids, and pills coated with gelatin (certain Muslims, Jews, and Hindus); and vaccinations[?]…Not much help there for the lower courts bound by today's decision." "Approving some religious claims while deeming others unworthy of accommodation could be 'perceived as favoring one religion over another,' the very 'risk the [Constitution's] Establishment Clause was designed to preclude." "The court, I fear, has ventured into a minefield."
  8. On the way home Max Kellerman was talking about how after the first 4 picks fell Exum was going to Utah and Smart to Boston while he blasted D'Antoni for the Lakers winning some of their last games and hurting their lottery chances. Anyways I'm not disappointed in getting Randle considering both Smart and Gordon were off the board.
  9. I like how him opting out is the headliner at some sports pages over the world cup results. Supposedly the Clippers are high on his list and that would be fun to watch him playing with Paul and Griffin.
  10. I know there are exclusions but generally trades in the NBA have to be within a certain dollar amount salary wise unless something changed with the last CBA. The rumors involving Nash seem to be the Lakers taking a contract back which means at least in those cases they aren't freeing up any money. Nash's contract might be attractive to a team who wants to get rid of someone making a nice chunk of money who is signed longer than Nash.
  11. I was able to load the site with no issues as well. Perhaps the DMV is now following in the IRS' footsteps and targeting right wing wackadoos. Good luck!
  12. Agreed. Unless there's more that isn't being reported that leads teams to believe there's a long term issue I don't see him lasting until pick 7. There an article at sportsline talking about how the Lakers are considering him at 7 if he falls and it seems like they're just trying to fill space with an article like that.
  13. Lakers fan and I'm not really sold on Randle. The knock on him is that he was pushed around by bigger or stronger guys in college and in the NBA he'll face that type of competition every night. To be fair though all of these guys are far from done developing and the Lakers are rebuilding. At 7 unless someone falls I'm hoping for Gordon or Smart but let's be honest the NBA draft is a major crapshoot in any given year.
  14. I had AP classes all 4 years in high school but didn't go the IB route. Most of the people in the AP classes were in the IB program and they were pretty down to earth albeit they seemed shy and standoffish to the kids who didn't know them or have classes with them. While I haven't kept in touch with many of them directly my friends who are on facebook have told me that some of them seem to be doing pretty well in life - multiple lawyers, some doctors and the list goes on. AP classes are great because by passing the tests you can avoid taking some of the lower level college courses that are required for everyone. My girlfriend's niece will graduate in 2015 from high school and she already has quite a few credits out of the way which will save time and money. I'm not a teacher and I've been out of the public system for almost 15 years now but when a small percentage of the kids get more of the money something isn't quite right. The federal rules say you have to provide certain services and I get that but there's stories of districts cutting transportation for 90% of their students in order to provide transportation to those with disabilities. I know multiple teachers and one worked with disabled children who had parents who always wanted more one on one time and some who even sued the districts for more time and resources for their child. Just to clarify I'm not blaming anyone but putting the majority at a disadvantage for the minority never really works out. That said there's little or no correlation between money spent per pupil and test results so I can see someone arguing against the spending gap. I think no child left behind failed and teachers shouldn't have to deal with unruly kids who disrupt and hold up the rest of the class. Again all your doing is helping the minority at the expense of the majority. Stop treating kids like they're all winners because that isn't how the real world works. Ultimately though as others have mentioned it all starts at home. Other countries put more emphasis on education and plenty of immigrants come here and have children who thrive in the US system. The greatest teacher on the planet can't help kids who go home and don't have parents who take an interest in their education. I think ultimately the biggest problem education faces is the biggest problem we face as a country - not enough people taking responsibility for their actions and kids are the responsibility of parents first and foremost and not the schools.
  15. Grow your beard out even more and let your family sleep underneath it.
  16. Thanks for the recommendations. I actually had the Dresden series recommended some time back but never got around to it. Will try to especially if I can find some of the books locally.
  17. As a kid I liked reading Dragonlance novels which were geared towards a younger crowd unlike this series and from time to time I still go back and read some of the ones I kept. In the last 12 months I read the Drizzt series which I liked then I picked up the Icewind Dale trilogy (entire series in one book) and need to finish that. I like reading actual books and haven't made the switch to an e-reader so I go to used book stores of which there are fewer and fewer but can always find used books on amazon. Really I'm open to suggestions and had someone recommend the Iron Druid Chronicles. Most of the series I've read over the years have leaned towards fantasy.
  18. I'm going to check out the Stormlight Archive series (only thing I don't like is that it's far from complete) but any other recommendations? Particularly any series that are completed and are 3-5 books long? I started reading wheel of time and got 3 books in and wasn't really interested enough to keep reading. Wasn't bad but just seemed kind of repetitive to me and at that point it wasn't complete.
  19. San Antonio has been the model of consistency and best run franchise in the NBA since they drafted Duncan. That said once he's gone they're going to take a step back because it's not easy to replace a top 10 all time NBA player who's been anchoring the middle for you for 15+ years. Popovich is a great coach but I wouldn't blame him if he retired when Duncan does because despite how well run the franchise is and how good they've been in the draft they're going to take a step back. It may not be a brutal process like it is for some teams but it could take a few years to get back to the elite status.
  20. Way too young. Always seemed like a nice guy in interviews and was a hell of a player. RIP.
  21. Congrats to the kings. Awesome series and that was an amazing game. I got tired at the bar drinking can't imagine how players on both teams felt.
  22. This is probably a Craig but quite honestly I don't have time to go through all the threads and it's the main thing I saw when I opened the article: http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/mlb-big-league-stew/coco-crisp-robs-home-run--finger-wags-angels-after-fireworks-go-off-prematurely-040218118.html
  23. I have no issue with breast feeding my only problem is when you see stories like this pop up it's people who are doing it in a way that draws attention to themselves like they want to make it bigger than it needs to be. A mom doing it at a restaurant, a coffee shop or in a park while she has a blanket or whatever to cover is one thing but some chick popping her boob out while she's standing up in front of people or during a big moment like a graduation screams attention grab. I don't advertise I just dropped the kids off at the pool even though people see me walk out of a bathroom.
  24. Actually 11 years into the league Kobe was playing with Odom, Kwame Brown, Luke Walton, Farmar and Andrew Bynum who was in his second year. The Heat have a much better roster than that but I'm guessing you're thinking of after the Lakers acquired Gasol. Lebron will go down as a better player but the fact that he bolted and formed a super team in Miami will always be held against him when comparing him to Jordan. They weren't the first super team but I can't recall another one where 3 in their prime all NBA players joined up.
  25. My friends mom has worked there for 40 some odd years and is nearing retirement. She made it through all the cuts until now but I'm going to have to ask my buddy what's going on.
