I think you could argue he was signed for more than that, but it was definitely a factor.

Why would you when you could get him for league minimum and not give up anything?
He will be on someones roster opening day, id put money on that.  They may have passed on the trade for PR reason but hes going to be in someones uniform.

For me this is simple, yes, i would.
He was not even charged for whatever freakish shit went down.  In my book and per due process that means hes innocent.  Its a virtual lock there are guys as freaky or worse in the league.
Would i pay 22M for him, no, but i dont have to either... for 720K, absolutely i take that chance 

In his last two seasons pitched he would have been #1 on our staff by miles.  I may not like the man, but the player, yeah, ill take that.

He opened the coffers to increase sale value, nothing more.   Hes get more if the team is competitive.   I hate to be that guy but yeah, thats where i am with him.

Lets not forget, no charges were brought and he was not convicted of anything, by definition that means hes innocent.   Our opinion of him as a person means nothing to that.  Its a virtual lock that there are many sexual defiant in the league and other types of people that have had drug issues, domestic issues etc... 
Baurs suspension was in my opinion a gross overstep by the league, guys that were charged or convicted got far less, even for the same type of offense. 
Wining and losing, thats all that does, and he would certainly help in that regard.

I think you have to say yes and let the pieces fall where they may.

It isnt about brand names, its about impact.
I would be just as happy to swing a trade for a SS, but the reality is that we dont have the farm to trade for an impact SS, unless we take on a bad contract or give up guys we shouldnt be giving up in controllable young starters we actually also need.  Weakening one area to buff another is generally a zero sum equation.
But the simple fact is that SS is the one place that we most needed to upgrade.
If Perry can somehow swing a deal hat doesnt cost us Suarez or Sandoval to get the SS we need, no one will be happier than I, but he has zero leverage right now and every team he calls knows it.
Thats what position he never should have let himself get put in.

The biggest problem with all that isnt waiting 5 years, its that weve been told thats what they have been doing for the last 10.
But yeah, that graphic pretty much sums up in my view why we seem unable to sign players without over bidding. 
Would you want to play here given all that?  Be honest...   and before anyone plays the Ohtani card lets not forget we were the only teams that could give him what he wanted and where, we didnt earn that, we defaulted into it.  

I love what hes done so far, started off doing the exact right things... but as usual were left wondering if or when they will finish the job, and its starting to look like they wont. 
A huge if isnt going to retain Ohtani, im sorry blast me all you want but thats just reality, hes gone if thats who we are.

If this is where we project, and its about right and seems to be consensus, there is no reason to not trade him not and get more value. 
Not what i wanted or hoped, but this is where we are today.

a big contract to swanson scares the crap out of me.  lots of red flags with the bat.  The 3 WAR version is probably sustainable for 3, maybe 4 years.  But it feels like he could go really bad, really fast.  I feel like he's kind of the Jason Heyward of short stops.   I think I could live with around 5/100 but he's gonna get way more than that.  6/150 would make me very uncomfortable.
