  1. We got our first snow last night. Now it's just doing standard plains crap like being cold, windy, and generally inhospitable. I despise winter.
  2. I heard a funny story years ago about the Cubs offering Jamie Moyer a job as a pitching coach... In 1995.
  3. I don't play nearly as much as I used to, but I've always considered breaking 100 to be a good day for me. I was out in SoCal a few weeks ago and went to play a round with my cousin that works at Indian Palms in Indio. Managed to shoot a 46 on the back (Royal), so that felt good. I don't wish to talk about the front.
  4. Yeah, I'd really like us to start pumping some money into a strong scouting/development program in Latin America. Given the way the free agent market for major league players is structured, I would think the ROI from putting a ton of resources toward Latin America would be way better.
  5. The Republicans need a major image makeover and it should start with getting the Palins and Bachmanns of the world as far away from the nomination process as possible. The fact that they've been involved in that process the last two elections sends a message to a lot of voters (especially the younger ones, IMO) that the party as a whole considers their ideas worthy of consideration.
  6. I've always thought of the term "Jew" as describing two distinct things that happen to use the same term. One could be an ethnically Jewish atheist or a Native American that practices Judaism.
  7. I think he'll play if he feels ok. But I'm not sure he feels ok.
  8. Bunting with a runner on first is never a good idea, IMO. The Aybar one might have been understandable (though I'd still be against it) with a major league hitter behind him. But the Calhoun one was an atrocious idea regardless of the count.
  9. A thank you goes out to Kinsler for doing the right thing there.
  10. I don't get TNT, and this ****ing O's game won't end. ANGER!!!
  11. It's a national broadcast. The entire US is blacked out.
  12. It should definitely be addressed. No doubt about that. It's just not going to be the apocalyptic killer people are making it out to be. At least not in the US. If we shut down every hospital in the US and opened our borders completely, it could possibly have the potential to kill hundreds of thousands or millions here, but as long as we follow responsible medical practices, it should be a pretty minor event here.
  13. One of the craziest examples is all the unusable infrastructure we've built in Afghanistan. US contractors made a boatload of money for building power plants that just sit vacant and unused.
  14. We accepted a lot of words for a long time that people would be reprimanded or fired for saying at work now. Language does evolve, and getting rid of this team's name would be a good example of it. I say we go to an Indian reservation and just ask, "How you Redskins doing?"
  15. I understand that, but you're still way more likely to be diagnosed with cancer tomorrow than Ebola.
  16. In terms of actual response, you're absolutely right. We pour tons of money and effort into cancer research and treatment. Maybe it's just living in a red state, but I've been so frustrated by the recent things I've heard here in the Midwest akin to, "Oh no! It's coming for us. How can we possibly protect ourselves?" People here are acting like the freaking apocalypse has arrived, when it's a relatively small threat to us.
  17. I can see people from that area of the world overstaying their visas here, thus making them illegal, but getting from Liberia to here illegally would be pretty damn difficult.
  18. Sorry, I just think we should be more concerned about cancer as a threat to us and our loved ones than Ebola. Obviously, one is contagious and the other is not, but we're freaking out over something that hasn't really had a big impact, and is pretty treatable with a good health care infrastructure.
  19. People are reacting as though this is going to turn into some sort of modern day plague here, when it just hasn't done that kind of damage. This is a story being way over-sensationalized in the media. We're going to be fine. I wouldn't be shocked if 10, 20, or 100 people here are eventually infected, but the mortality rate will almost certainly be lower than in West Africa, and it will never pose a threat comparable to much more common ailments.
  20. Do you really not see the difference? The Blackhawks are named after a person, the Indians after several groups of people, and the Chiefs after a title for leaders in some of those groups. Redskins is just a racial slur. The fact that we've chose to deem it acceptable for so long doesn't mean that it is. It just means we've collectively been insensitive pricks for a while.
  21. Total Ebola deaths worldwide since December = About 3,500 Total cancer deaths in the state of Texas (year 2007) = About 35,000
  22. Seems like a complex situation, as the mayor and their son were apparently in a physical altercation when he was shot. And who knows how bad that was? Maybe she feared for her son's life? I'm guessing they're still collecting evidence and trying to piece together the story; but I wouldn't be surprised if she's charged with something, just not first degree murder.
