19HALO71 got a reaction from Angel Oracle in Cespedes anyone?
I would hope, that IF the Angels were to get involved with Cespedes that they would incorporate some kind of opt out. They could offer him a big signing bonus and basically buy themselves a third year team opt out. This would protect the organization from having another Hamilton/VW type situation again. Not saying that I have the contract answers, but he is the type of player that could really have a positive impact on both sides of the ball. We may very well have the best defensive outfield in baseball and a pretty good offensive one as well.

Hard to argue for huge $ when you are out for the entire season.  He will get paid a lot more if he is pitching.  That is the only reason he did PRP and stem cell treatment.

Didn't Bartolo Colon win the AL Cy Young award in 05? I think that makes him the ace of the staff.

You could run Jefry Marte out there for a full season and come close to the same line. Defense won't be as good, and yeah, it's silly think he'd be as good with a bat, but the difference isn't worth the $20m+ in salary that would separate them.

    Cespedes: .280/.354/.530/.884 133 OPS+
    Marte: .252/.310/.530/.790 115 OPS+

And in 3 seasons with Oakland, Cespedes' line was basically Marte : .262/.318/.470/.788
Better use of money elsewhere. You could get two or three cheap vets at LF, a range of SP, and maybe have enough for cheap help at 2B/RP for same money, or go big on a closer and still have enough to add one other FA at LF or a cheaper SP.

    Here's a question to ponder.
There are no golden answers, necessarily.
Question though is, is it more accurate to say that you can better foresee durability issues in a college pitcher vs HS pitcher, when drafting?
The HS pitcher usually never gets to 100 innings in a HS season.
College starting pitchers can reach 100 innings the freshman year, and eventually 140 innings by their junior year.   That allows a MLB scout to see how they handle a bigger workload.
For every Kershaw drafted from HS, how many HS pitchers fail to develop any durability over time?
That is why if the tank continues and the Halos are in position to do so, they probably need to draft one of the quartet of stud college RHPs slated to go within the Top 10 picks?

Am I the only one that gets a sick feeling in their stomach whenever I read/hear about GRich?
I can't get past the idea that his arm is going to completely fall from his body. I really wish he would have opted for the Tommy John surgery.
    Wish him the best though.

If the internet was around 100 years ago, some of the greatest names in baseball may not have lived up to your standards. I think you brought up Hamilton's cheating on his wife. I can't name names but I am sure that is not an uncommon occurrence among pro athletes today and in the days before social media.
As far as drugs go, as little as 20 to 30 years ago amphetamines were given to players like candy before and even during games to build up their endurance. I am fairly certain that the greatest player the game has ever known Babe Ruth would drink to excess regularly, and I fairly certain he wasn't always a faithful husband either.
If you look closely at players you will skeletons in a lot of closets. You hear about them more today because of the press and the internet.

He seems to have figured it out and this stretch he has had is too long to just be a sample size.  His peripherals are great and he is actually doing something different (throwing more split fingers and his FB velocity is up) so its not just an aberration.  You don't want to trade him just for him to turn into the next Arrieta.

I honestly believe that Shoe has figured it out. Maybe it's the mechanics or he is just letting it fly, I think we're seeing what Shoemaker is going to be. I say keep him and let's ride this out. Unless we are just overwhelmed by an offer, hold onto him until the trade deadline.

The first year I became aware of baseball and the Phillies was 1961. That team went 47-107 and lost 23 games in a row at one point.
But I had a Phillies cap and T-shirt and my grandfather took me to my first game. I had no idea how bad the team was.
