wopphil reacted to Angelsjunky in Taylor WARd
I saw a comp of Josh Donaldson, who was also drafted as a catcher in the 1st round (2007), eventually transitioned to 3B after a few years in the minors. Donaldson didn't get his first taste of the majors until 24 (2010), then become a star at 27 (2013) and one of the best players in the game for about five years.

That said, its funny to see this happening now, while the Mariners looked on the up and up last year, only to have us screw them the final weekend and cockblock their playoffs... then open this year poorly, and watch the Angels streaking...
... and his draft pick killing it... and having nobody know hes the one who drafted him.. lol

Just cuz I write a lot of stuff doesn't make me smart but I'm certainly not afraid to offer my opinion if that helps.
To me it goes beyond just garden variety plate discipline. His pitch recognition is otherworldly right now. He spits on pitches about half a ball outside the zone with consistency. And the one thing that I'd have to check the numbers on but just from the eye test, his plate coverage is ridiculous. He can turn on something inside. He'll whack a double to the opposite field. Early on, I was always a bit concerned that his swing was a bit long but there are very few holes right now. I would watch him in AAA where he hit .330 with a .435 obp and think that it had to be a decent chunk of smoke and mirrors and that it couldn't possibly translate even though I was a big believer that he'd be a solid major leaguer. But you watch him and he's just in complete control of almost every at bat. Every pitch. It's very very impressive.

wopphil got a reaction from stormngt in Ken Rosenthal thinks Minasian will be aggressive at the deadline
You have to wonder if we still match well with the Marlins. With Ward demonstrating he is an everyday MLB player, and Marsh seemingly taking a step forward over last year, Adell is expendable. If he has appeal to a team like the Marlins, it would seem the pieces could fall into line for a trade.

Angel fans have punted and many are throwing the baby out with the bath water but Jo Adell still has considerable value.
He's flawed but not incapable and in a world where the DH is universal, a guy with 90th percentile barrel and sprint speed rates at the MLB level is already more proven than most guys on top 100 lists.... He's a 23 year old that was sent down despite a 95 OPS+, most teams would view that as a potential building block given his age. Yoan Moncada was one if the most coveted young players in baseball after his age 23 season where he put up an OPS+ of 96 despite leading the universe in strikeouts. Right handed power is always at a premium, probably more so now that the balls aren't juiced. I made this same exact argument and was scoffed at by people here about Trumbo prior to his being traded.
If the Angels are willing to part with Adell they can match a lot if not most teams. Whether or not they are willing to punt on his potential value based on Taylor Ward having a tremendous 30 days.... Different story.

wopphil got a reaction from AngelsLakersFan in 18 potential starting pitchers available at the deadline (MLBTR article)
I think our rotation has over-achieved thus far. I expect Syndergaard and Lorenzen to start giving up more runs. And I am not yet sold on Detmers, at least not as someone who is going to help much this year.
So I’d love to see us acquire Montas. Not sure Adell has enough value to be the centerpiece of a trade, but that might be a trade that makes sense for both teams.

wopphil got a reaction from WicketMaiden in OC Register: Taylor Ward sparks Angels’ lineup and 5 pitchers shut out Nationals
I don’t think it’s unreasonable to believe Ward might be a late blooming, above average, every day player. The combination of his hitting approach, his success in the minor leagues, and his improvement the last three years in the big leagues leads me to believe we might have a Justin Turner type player on our hands.

Yeah I think he’s going to be a solid player moving forward. The most impressive part is how most of his ABs are very good. Last night he went hit less but still walked 3 times. His plate discipline seems to be the best in the line up. What a wonderful surprise for the Halos

wopphil got a reaction from Amazing Larry in MLB suspends Trevor Bauer for TWO seasons
This is what I understand the least about all this. If he really assaulted them, why did they go back for more? I mean, if I went to a restaurant and got horrible food poisoning, I’d never go back - let alone return just a few days later. And I’m sure if I did go back, nobody would believe me when I complained that the restaurant gave me horrible food poisoning, but I kept going back for more.
