krAbs got a reaction from ettin in YOU Build the 2020 Angels // YOUR Offseason Plan
This comment sent me down a bit of a rabbit whole. Seems like of all the fielding positions, catchers have got to have the most trouble hitting this mark. Not only do they tend to have low averages, there also seem to be a lot of big boi catchers.
So, I went to ESPN and started looking at data. First off, I have some questions about these weights. For example, I don't believe for one moment that this absolute unit:

    is only 185 pounds.
But, for data acquisition purposes, I had to assume their numbers are right. Going down the list, it looks like last year, the best catcher who can't manage to hit above his weight is: Tyler Flowers. Part of this comes from his piddly .229 batting average. But, to be fair to him, the fact that he weighs a whopping 260 lbs isn't doing him any favors here. That number threw me for a bit - he certainly doesn't LOOK like your typical chonky catcher. But, it looks like that is coming from the fact that he's freaking 6' 4". And catching. Somehow. For reference, the tallest catcher of all time is a 3-way tie between Pete Koegel, Don Gile, and Anton Falch, each clocking in at 6' 6".
However, the catcher with the best overall career batting average who can't manage to bat his weight is: Evan Gattis. Clocking in at 6'4", 270 lbs, Gattis has a career .247 batting average. Despite being completely unable to bat his weight, Gattis has picked up 8.3 bWAR over 6 seasons and 706 games. Given his girth, Gattis has yet to have a single season in which his batting average has been above his current weight.

At some point, the “hope we don’t pay x amount for so and so” has to stop, in my opinion.
We have committed to Trout. Now it’s time to commit to winning, we’ve put ourselves in a great position to spend cash; Cole is the type of player you break the bank for and Strasburg is right behind him. If the Angels aren’t willing to commit the money, then be prepared for more .500 seasons and terrible starting pitching.  Maybe they shouldn’t go 10 years for Cole, but they better be willing to match the Yankees average salary.

Signing Cole will likely hit a 7 to 8 year contract and Art/Eppler know this.  They aren't bargain hunting Gerrit Cole when 75% of baseball is in on him.
This is jut a silly line thinking.

I like BP and I like the list.  Jam Jones has had two poor seasons in a row now.  Yes, he showed some life towards the end of the year but it is what it is.  He’s not a very good prospect right now.  I think that the ranking reflect what that Angels have invested in towards the top of the draft so I think it’s unsurprising to see some of these rank where they are.  Also, I only saw him a few times but to me Orlando Martinez was the best player to spend the entire season at IE.  Glad to see them recognize him.  He has a nice tool set.
