Exactly why I'm not worried about things now. Some guys will be better than expected, some will be worse, and if we're in contention at the trade deadline (and I have no reason to believe that we won't be), the FO will make a move or two to improve our chances.

Much has been made of the supposed resurrection of UNLV basketball by Coach Dave Rice. I went to their game with Fresno State at the Thomas and Mack Center yesterday. The Rebels started off like they were going to blow the Bulldogs out of the gym, jumping out to a 10-4 lead. Little did we all know that this would be the highlight of the day. I saw a team that lacked desire, did not hustle, jacked up threes from the stratosphere, were poorly positioned defensively and threw wild passes. They were out-hustled all game long by the 14-point underdog Fresno squad, who obviously wanted to win - much more than I saw from the home squad in their last home game, Senior Day. A nine-point loss was the result, and the Bulldogs led by as many as 11 points in the first half. Assessments around these parts put UNLV either in the NCAA Tournament or on the bubble. What I saw yesterday told me that they don't belong in the field. They have been horrible on the road all year long, and yesterday showed me that they want their season to end. There is still the Mountain West tournament, which I now believe that they will either have to make the finals in or win it, or else it's "Hello, NIT". Coach Rice said after the game that he "saw this coming". Why? Did he know that he didn't have his team ready? For all the platitudes that have been heaped upon this guy, apart from recruiting I just don't see it. The "young team" excuse doesn't wash at this point. By yesterday this team had been together for an entire season, and I saw the same things yesterday that people were complaining about after the first couple of games. This club has no discipline or desire. They have a couple of guys out for individual stats but I don't see much teamwork.

Chris Berman's act has gotten rather tired, too. At least he isn't a primary anchor anymore. First, there was the word play with every player's name, then rumbin', bumblin', stumblin, he could - go - all - the - way, then when that wasn't obnoxious enough, "Whoop!". And we won't even go into the "Schwam", who most of the guys on this board could probably outperform in making NFL picks. I really don't understand why Berman is held is such high esteem. He has been a parody of himself for years.

These guys just make friends all over. First, the football team insulted the entire city of El Paso plus their opponents, now this. USC is lucky to have such great ambassadors for their school.

People dismissed David Eckstein for his size too, and he had a pretty good career.

I don't agree. The WBC is a recent invention, it is short term and baseball would survive just fine without it. It disrupts spring training, and a lot of MLB GMs would like to see it go away. Besides, many of the European teams are just made up of American players with the right ethnic surnames. That would be like me playing for Ireland, even though I have never been there, much less lived there.

I was on an Illinois Fighting Illini board for a short time (before I got punted). There was a moderator who went by the name of Secret Police (you can probably guess what his moderating style was). He constantly threatened users and he banned a bunch of them (me included). No great loss, IMO.

I got kicked off a forum once myself, and I'm not the kind to engage in personal attacks. My crime? It was a college football fan board, and I dared to say (in pretty much these words) that perhaps the man the university had hired as head coach wasn't the best choice. It was a "rah rah" board, and dissenting opinions weren't tolerated. It led me to join a board with freer speech, and the board I run now is a descendant of that board, splitting off when the owners of the original decided to shut down. I have kicked a few people off, but they worked hard to earn it. If the mods on that Clippers board are that sensitive, you're better off moving on. Odd that they tolerate trolls while axing contributors.

But he also said the government has no intention of carrying out drone strikes inside the United States. Echoing what he said in a letter to U.S. Sen. Rand Paul, R-Kentucky, he called the possibility of domestic drone strikes "entirely hypothetical." So we're having this drawn out, heated dialog over a comment about a hypothetical situation. I cannot definitively say that there is absolutely no circumstance under which it would make sense to use an armed drone in our own country. If Osama bin Laden had been holed up in an isolated cabin in a rural part of Arizona, say...but it makes equal sense to say that it is not part of a plan or strategy.

Beyond a certain point, additional time in the minors is of no value. The player is either developed enough to remain at the big league level or he isn't.
