We didn’t sign Shohei to a 10 year/$600 million extension. We gotta break the streak of signing/trading for people to not play for $30+million a year. As Angels as this is, that would have been even more Angels.

I'm sure in ST/February we'll be hearing how Rendon is finally injury free, feeling great and in the best shape in a decade.

I feel like you are always there to counter-point any post that has a criticism of the Angels.  Always changing the narrative to a potential positive.  But not in an optimistic fan-boy way (which would be fine).  But in a "i work for the Angels organization" type way.  Not that you do obviously.  But it comes off that way.  Like there is no way to criticize the team/organization at all with you.  Let's be real, there's a lot to do so with them.  You can be hopeful and supportive of the team, while also acknowledge the failures and problematic issues.
Even you have to be able to admit that the lack of any power at all is a concern at this early juncture in his career; and that the majors with a desperate to win team is not an ideal place for such a youngster to immediately jump from a mid-major college to now learn how to hit with a wooden bat, go against the best Ps in the world, etc.

If that's the case, and ultimately it turns out to not be an easy fix/adjustment (e.g., getting used to wooden bats), then it makes the selection of him and full slot payment even more of a questionable decision.  I don't care how elite the OBP/eye is for a guy -- he needs to have more elite skills than that to justify.  The problem is, he's negative or average (at best) for all other spots.  Negative power (especially for the position), defensive negative, speed negative.  I love the OBP and patience/eye...but not at the expensive of everything else.  Especially at 1B.
He has time to adapt and improve.  But doing that in the majors is not the ideal place to do so.  Worse when it's a team that is so desperate to win.  Maybe if it's the A's or some full-on rebuilding team like the O's a few years back.  Peculiar management decisions.  I hope in the end they end up being on the right side of things here.  History hasn't been their friend though.

Could also just be a combination of things like transition to wooden bats full-time (if you look at his summer league numbers, he only hit 4 HR in 252 AB using wooden bats), higher quality of pitchers, etc.  Hopefully he gets stronger and develops more lift over the winter.  I know that exit velocity isn't everything and I probably carp on it too much, but his average exit velocity (84.3 mph) is closer to David Fletcher (82.7 mph career avg) than it is even to someone like a Chad Wallach (86.8 career avg).

He plays first base and not particularly well so far.  After the positional adjustment for 1B, it takes him into slightly negative WAR territory.
I love his OBP and contact skills, but the underlying metrics are still a little scary and aren't getting better as he gets more ABs.  His avg exit velocity is very low, as is his max exit velocity.  He's still got a high (though not insanely so) BABIP, his hard hit % is way below league average, he's hitting a ton of ground balls, etc.
He's got a very solid foundation of skills to build from and obviously his story isn't fully written after 86 plate appearances--but it does look like there are some things he'll need to work on to become a more well-rounded offensive threat.

Angels in 2030 reacted to totdprods in Blake Snell
Signing a super expensive pitcher sounds dumb as shit right now given the overall state of the team.
Rangers have done pretty good recently signing guys to those mid-range deals. Perez, Gray, Gibson, Lynn, even Heaney. We tried with Anderson, it didn’t work, but those deals don’t kill a budget, especially if Ohtani and/or Trout aren’t here next year. And they’re affordable enough to dump if they suck without too much egg on the face, and affordable enough to be great trade value if they’re good and the team is out.
Angels should sign one SP who is kind of high-risk/high-reward on a one-year deal, like they did with Syndergaard. Maybe that’s Giolito, Severino, Flaherty, Maeda, and then lock in another Anderson-esque 3/$30-39m type like Montgomery. See if you can get a young bat (2B? OF?) for Sandoval, like a Jordan Westburg, or an outfielder from Arizona or St. Louis or Andy Pages or an infielder from Cincy. Draft the best, closest to MLB-ready college arm and fast-track him. Drop the ‘win now’ mentality and let the kids grow into the next core, and trade off vets as able.

You can’t watch that half-inning and not realize that the Angels have a player development problem.
Paris and Adams were raw talents out of high school, and the Angels staff and player dev have done nothing to help them.
They suck in all facets, because the org doesn’t help them get better in any facet.

It's pretty shocking the lineup today compared to opening day.  Indeed basically a middle of the road (at best) AAA lineup.

Let's be real here -- even if they got the #1 pick, they are not picking a HS player.  Nope.  It'll be an older college player like a 3B, corner OF or a back end SP (who may need to move to BP)....and is a relatively easy sign.

Angels in 2030 reacted to Jeff Fletcher in Angels Open to Trading Trout (IF he requests one)
This is probably the only time in my life that I’ll agree with Curt Schilling.

By the way, I think …
“Team X is open to trading Player Y if he asks to be traded” has always been a true statement at all times.

If a guy doesn’t want to be there, you don’t want him there. And if it happens to be a guy who is more tradeable, then it just means you get more for him. In this case, I don’t believe Trout wants to be traded and I don’t believe the Angels could make a trade that would help them, so it’s a non-story.
