No. We should be wary of signing relievers to long term deals because that's an idea that is generally not good.

If Moreno thought seriously that Ohtani was going to stay then he's an idiot. If he's butthurt and paralyzed as a result of Ohtani's leaving then he should get out of the business.

Bellinger and Snell are both landmines that the Angels need to avoid. First, it's free agency, you're going to need to overpay for their services so you're already starting behind the proverbial 8 ball. Second, Snell is a five inning specialist that's notorious for ice cold Aprils and Mays. Third, don't be fooled by career highs. 180 innings isn't the norm for Snell. Particularly as he advances in age, it's likely that 130-150 innings is the norm. Fourth, in regards to Bellinger, the statcast data (we are in the statcast age, after all) doesn't paint a pretty picture. He'll get paid the MVP that he was but he isn't that guy. Fifth, Bellinger is a good defensive outfielder but for the money you're paying him, it's mostly the bat, so a move to 1B it's coming sooner rather than later, and the Angels already have a heck of a 1B prospect in Schanuel.
The Angels need to do exactly what they've done so far, which is basically nothing. Sign a few relievers that you can flip for prospects at the deadline. Allow Ward and Rengifo to get healthy and prove themselves so you can trade them and further boost the farm. Trade away mistake contracts like Stassi and Fletcher.  Allow unfavorable contracts like Rendon and Anderson to expire and get them off the books. Give the young guys plenty of opportunity to learn and grow in the big leagues before extending them with three money you saved from offloading contracts.
Rebuild, and come back three years from now ready to compete. And do it right too. Build a farm so that success can be sustainable.

Totally off-topic - I was browsing the Giants rotation and saw Ross Stripling listed, and it got me thinking back on that supposed Arte-nixed deal of Rengifo and Ward (and maybe a prospect?) for Pederson, Stripling, and Pages...and how it was actually a good non-trade. Pages would've been a good get, but neither Stripling nor Pederson have been all that great (especially in the subsequent year or two following that near-trade) whereas Rengifo and Ward have been at least as productive, if not better. Perhaps a rare instance where Arte's meddling was good?

The lack of anything substantial being done by the Angels so far sucks.  The lack of moves solely to try to make the fanbase THINK they are trying does not.  Given recent history, avoiding big money mistakes would be a refreshing change.

I agree let Adell and Moniak get the AB but DH is open but I do not sign Duvall. His road numbers were not good last year.

If someone like Duvall is the main option at this point, I'd honestly just rather send Adell/Moniak out there for the full year and finally answer whether either/both of them can hack it.

Signing Hader seems like a waste of resources for where the team is right now, but what do I know?  He'll likely get the largest contract ever (or close to it) for a closer.  Seems like something a team that's on the verge of winning it all would do to shore up things, not something a team in the Angels' position should be doing.

Rengifo will do his usual thing where he starts off hitting like .219 with a bunch of errors. We'll put him in every fan-made trade package and then he'll bat like .400 in July and then we'll forget how valuable he is, again.
There's a reason a lot of teams want him. He's one of those "2 WAR" guys doc and IP talk about. But there's potential for more.

If we could go ahead and not sign anyone with a sub 1 era in the prior year but is absolute ASS the rest of their career that would be great.

Thanks for the deep dive @Inside Pitch. You just talked me out of wanting anything to do with Bellinger. I already was against the signing initially but started to warm to the idea after losing Ohtani.

Bellinger is the guy I'm most afraid Arte pushes for. He just screams typical Moreno-era Angels free agent bust to me. More gut feeling than anything, but your post seems to back that a little.

In the very short-term, sure.  Having a bad system will prevent you from much needed additions internally and via trades.
But over 8 years, it doesn't hold water.  Eventually there should be good draft picks, selling pieces for prospects, etc.  The funny thing is they got Ohtani as a freeby basically -- no draft pick.  Sure he cost their int'l money, but those guys are lottery tickets at best.  Ohtani was a sure thing and turned out even better.
OK, maybe a bad GM screws things up...well, they've gone thru what like three now the past few years.  I mean seriously, can you mess things up even more?  A top 5-10 ML budget, Trout and Ohtani....yet can't even get to 500.  Time to walk away from the table, cash in what you have Arte and move on to let someone else take your spot on the table.

Agree 100%. I would rather look at 2024 as a developmental year instead of pretending that Snell and Bellinger make us a WC contender.

They both suck.  That's the problem.  We got rid of a bad player that we gave over 80 innings to for another bad player.  They've added 4 bad pitchers to the 40 man roster so far this off season.  4 guys who are less accomplished and less likely to perform well than Aaron Loup and Ryan Tepera.
What is the likelihood they're going to have signed these guys to major league deals and then replace them with better players before spring?
Adam Cimber, Adam Kolarek, and Luis Garcia all have a really good shot at making this team.  Jimmy Herget is still on the roster.  Jose Suarez and Zach Plesac are likely competing for the swing spot in the rotation.
The discussion isn't the shit show.  It's the roster composition that's a shit show.

I mean... it could be the plan if there's a potential sale coming.
Reminds me of the 2019-20 Mets maybe. The 2018-19 offseason they were pretty active, with the Diaz trade and some other bigger moves. After 2019, lost Wheeler and only signed a few relievers and back end starters coming off a 3rd place finish. Then, September 2020, sold to Steve Cohen.
    Probably wishful thinking... but......

Someone has to cover starts when there’s injuries.  Before Plesac, assuming our current rotation is Detmers-Sandoval-Canning-Anderson-Silseth, our options for that are…. Kenny Rosenberg, Sam Bachman, and Davis Daniel?  An optionable starter is a need
