I don't think he's playing primarily because of the money (though clearly a factor). I think he's primarily in it to chase records. That clearly means a lot to him. He wants to pad his HR, RBI, hit, doubles, etc. etc. totals and finish ahead of as many players who are currently ahead of him as he can.  He can't do any of that if he's on the bench. 
I love in particular how he says he doesn't want to play to embarrass himself. But that's exactly what he's been doing for a while now and he knows it. He's a shell of what he used to be and is one of the worst players in the game. 

It seems pretty obvious from those quotes that he plans on playing until his contract expires. Hopefully the new manager benches his ass to speed up this process.

It’s not so much Skaggs himself it’s the fact we could’ve sold extremely high on someone who can only trend downward from here.
When you have guys who outperform expectations IMO you need to take advantage of that, especially when you have plenty of other holes to fill like we do.
Just like we missed that boat on Calhoun and Bedrosian we again did the same with Skaggs.

I'm pretty sure that big Strad would have the highest winning % among managers this year if he managed the Red Sox (or close to it, anyway.)

But it is Ohtani and he has shown to be an extremely talented hitter. Players don't start as finished products. Why not get him AB's now to not only find out what he might be able to do over a longer stretch, but also whether he will need to be platooned in the future? We already know what Marte is and that is a journeyman and overall pretty shitty/average baseball player. Whereas Ohtani could be the complete opposite. 

I mean, I want to watch Shohei Ohtani.  Not Facking Jefre Marte.   I’m pretty sure most fans agree with me.  They aren’t playing for much at this point.  Ohtani is a really good bat.  Let him have exposure and figure out lefties.  Do we really think Ohtani projects as a situational lefty/righty hitter.  Would be pretty disappointing if that’s what he is. Treat the guy like the talent that he is.
