  1. I could only listen to Devenski's inning, but after Ohtani put some distance between us, and Soriano mowed them down, seemed like the Rangers were "done" - had our reliable closer coming in, time to just relax and enjoy watching him bring it home.  🙄

Still, Webb has some balls of steel on him, eh?

Really nice win - what is that, 24 come from behind wins?

Not gonna complain tonight - save the complaints for tomorrow

Arte will be gone within the next 3-5 years with or without Ohtani.  With the young guys starting to come up and playing for team friendly deals, this is exactly the time to spend on Ohtani.  A few weeks ago I was on board with selling on Ohtani but also trying to still compete this year, so basically be buyers and sellers.  Now I just think unless you are blown away by an offer for Ohtani, you keep him and add to this team to win this year.

I think the deficiencies in competing this year aren't insurmountable - so investing in the club for this year makes the most sense for Arte as long as it's more about taking on contracts rather than ruinous give-aways of needed talent.  One strong, consistent hitter, and a reliable #2 pitcher - I think this team can contend for the division, and at least land a WC spot.  (those things can still come from within from so-far under-achieving players.  Possible, if unlikely.)

When Arte sells, Ohtani here and under a new contract makes the team far more valuable to a buyer - so Arte doesn't really need to worry about the financials of such a deal - he'll be gone.

The other thing (we think) that'll keep Ohtani here is a future - get him to the playoffs this year, with a promise of more to come - that seems within reach.

Skimming a somewhat clickbaity MLB.com article about the Cards possibly moving Goldschmidt, with the Angels listed as a potential destination.

If St. Louis really was open to it, sure would make a lot of sense. He doesn’t have a huge commitment remaining for salary, gives Angels some Trout/Ohtani insurance this year and next, immediately fills a need at 1B.

Angels could conceivably part with guys like Quero or any of the IF prospects now with Neto seemingly locking in SS, one of Adams, Adell, or Moniak, and have decent enough pitching depth to part with some guys there. Jack Flaherty would be a solid SP addition too, and being local, a feasible extension candidate (if not already a possible off-season target?)…I would be real hesitant, but Detmers would be big on their wish list given his St. Louis history too.

What I’m saying is that we match up well, at the very least, for both teams’ wants and needs.

This would go a long way to beefing up the offense, though arguably, we need an TOR SP more (If the Cubs are serious about moving Stroman...)

No hed be known as the guy that gave him away for nothing... i wonder which is worse?

It's not "giving him away" - if he chooses to leave, then he leaves.

Who "gave" Vlad away to us?   Who gave away Max Scherzer?

    No idea.

Who sold Babe Ruth?  Who traded Pedro Martinez for Delino Deshields?

Don't even need to look them up.

The only scenario in which I trade him is if we're well out of it, *and* he tells management he won't sign an extension with this team, we absolutely know we can't afford him (and he plans to go to the highest bidder) or some team offers some astronomical haul of players.

Speaking of which, what do you think you'll get for a  guy getting paid $30m a year, and is a FA soon?

A team can't give up any "All-star" starters to get him - what would be the point if they want to make a playoff run, losing an equal current talent?

So, what, you get a handful of prospects that might be ready to play in 3 or 4 years, and maybe you'll get one able to take Trout's place in the OF as he winds down his career with losing season after losing season.

If we were going to trade him, it should've been this time last year.

I dunno, I don't want him to leave for nothing, either - but trading him would be a gut punch to every Angel fan - of whom there would be a lot fewer next season.

If he wants to leave, let *him* make that choice.

What we need is Barria and rain and call it a game after 5.

Not going to happen with the roof!

Texas BP Is also taxed and TBD is starting for them tmrw!!!

They called up Owen White for tonight - (I hate when we face a ML call-up for the 1st time).

But my hope is we get to him early, and force Bochy to use that tired bp - can make the next 2 games that much "easier"

I'm on the same boat. I trade him no matter what. This team is not going to win the World Series. They've had a good week, and Ohtani has been on fire. Go back and check the posts from 9 days ago. Everyone would have said to trade him. He's probably the most valuable deadline trade chip in the history of baseball of guys who were about to enter free agency.

The regular season is who has the best, most-balanced team.

    Playoffs are about who's hottest.

I don't think Arte can trade Ohtani - even if he told the club "No way I'm re-signing here", Arte probably wouldn't want to be known as the guy who traded away Babe Ruth nee' Ohtani for a bunch of guys whose name no one remembers.

I think he may elect to go all in, make some eye-watering trade for someone like Stroman and just hope for the best.

If he doesn't, and we miss the playoffs by 1 game, and Ohtani walks, he'll be the biggest goat (not GOAT) baseball has seen in years.

  7. What's made this team more interesting to watch this year *has* been the young guys you didn't expect; Thaiss, Neto, Moniak, O'Hoppe (dammit), (and Soriano, too), and the guys you didn't expect like Barria (knock wood.)

The bp is starting to look pretty good, too  - which plays into the one thing that gives me the most hope for these guys - the comeback wins.

No predictions - they're barely above .500 - but there are a lot of reasons to watch this team that aren't named Ohtani or Trout.

  8. The symptoms mentioned correspond to post-Covid complications with moderate-to-severe neurological symptoms (someone said he had Covid 3x)  From where he was to just being able to play on the field is a hopeful sign.

But there's just no knowing if he'll ever be the same player he was.  Which isn't some dire prediction, I'm hopeful, with time, he can return to what he was.

Do the laws of physics cease to exist on other seats of the plane? Are other players unaffected by those same travel days and are ok to play?

I'm sorry but this is in the rehlm of bullshit excuses and teeters on Prima Donna.

Well, he is the GOAT, so "prima donna" is kind of exactly what he is.

Just me wondering - personally, I find you take care of the little things, all the little things, and the big ones sort themselves out.   If I ran the team, I'd make do everything I could to make sure they're successful - even, you know, feeding and housing my minor league players.

Anyway, sorry someone pissed in your Cheerios

  10. “If you look in the past, long flights across the country and playing the next day don’t do well for me,” Trout said.

Anyone who's flown a lot knows what this is - aircraft pressurization and humidity levels are not the same across aircraft generations.

Trying flying a 787 for 8 hours, and then fly the same route on an older jet, like a 757, say - the 757 you'll be far more fatigued on arrival, you'll be dehydrated, your jet lag is worse, etc.

All of which leads up to - what kind of a/c are they flying on the longer haul flights?

Good question to think about…if Silseth becomes an immediate strong option as a high-lev reliever and runs with it for a few weeks or a month-plus…at what point do you take him out of that and try him back at the rotation? The need in pen is obviously greater, perhaps for the remainder of the year if not into next even.

I think you're right - they'll see what he has and increasingly (hopefully) use him as a high-lev reliever.

As a starter, his knock has been his length, but he was averaging 5 innings/start in SLC, so maybe he's built enough durability to start?

Long-term, I think we have to give him that chance to be a starter - but his value right now is probably as a reliever, even if Suarez continues to tank.

  12. Joe reminds me of that line in Bull Durham about shower shoes - "If you win 20 in the show, you can let the fungus grow back and the press'll think you're colorful.   Until you win 20 in the show, however, it means you're a slob."

When his teams were winning, he was a colorful genius.

When not, he was a senile weirdo living in his van down by the river.

Unemployed, he's a bitter, senile weirdo, living in his van down by the river, shouting "Notice me!" at passers-by.

So it seems like a lot or most of you hate the Dodgers? I’m curious why? My background is I’m 51, grew up in Long Beach rooting for both the Angels and Dodgers. I preferred the Angels but I also liked the Dodgers.

When my dad got tickets, we went to the Big A. If my grandpa got the tickets, we went to Dodger Stadium.
Just wondering if there are more like me or if most of you guys are just Angels fans.

Much the same, I was probably more a Dodger fan as a young kid, even did the "fan club" thing for a few years.

Can't say why, but the Angels became more appealing to me- the Dodgers were successful and corporate, while the Angels were, in a way, the more relatable, precisely because they weren't that good.

Also, Dodger fans gave me a hard time for rooting for the Angels - *I* didn't create a rivalry, Dodger fans did.  Kinda made me choose - and I chose the Angels.

I still respect and envy the Dodgers organization - there's no denying that org is in a class of its own.

But Dodger fans and their entitled behavior makes it nearly impossible to root for that team.

  14. Yeah, just thought they'd have it at a normal time, after the runners had finished.  But the finish line isn't that close to Fenway, so its manageable.

Come to think of it, Iirc, the year my girlfriend ran, there was a runner's party after the race at Fenway, so maybe that's the intent?

(btw, stayed at the Verb recently - their bar/restaurant has some really solid Asian/Korean food, if that's your jam)

Well, fair play for even trying it, most people are put off just by looking at it or knowing what it is. I had some yesterday with bacon, eggs, and hash browns, loved it.

I remember eating something in the Luton airport for breakfast - might've been black pudding?  Whatever it was, it made me lose my will to live.

But who am I to judge?  I eat scrapple, made from the parts of pigs rats won't eat.

I jinx the team just turning on the tv to watch, so don't feel badly.

Damn. MLB already charged me in full for MLB.TV at the beginning of March. I'm also a T-Mobile user .... has to be a way I can get a refund or credit ....

Ugh, their cancellation policy on annual renewals is ridiculous  - basically, after 5 days, cancellation doesn't take effect 'til next renewal period (i.e. next year.)

Still, worth a try - season hasn't even started yet.

Maybe send an email saying "Hey, I requested cancellation 3 weeks ago - what gives?"  🤐

TEMPE, Ariz. — Left-hander Patrick Sandoval is expecting his World Baseball Classic experience to pay dividends for him with the Angels.

“It was crazy,” Sandoval said Friday, with his Team Mexico bag sitting on the floor next to his locker in the Angels’ clubhouse. “I’ve never pitched in any environment like that ever in my life. It was really cool to get that out of the way and kind of done with for now, and prepare me for a postseason run.”

Sandoval’s two starts for Mexico were against Team USA and Japan, the teams that met in the finals. Both games were sold out. Sandoval gave up one run in 7 1/3 innings, beating the USA and taking a no-decision against Japan.

“I guess a little bit of a confidence boost in my stuff,” Sandoval said. “If it plays against those guys, it will play against anyone. More confidence in throwing strikes and not letting people get free bases.”

Sandoval struck out Mike Trout and walked him. Sandoval struck out Shohei Ohtani and got him on a lineout. He said Friday that there were no trash-talking texts going back and forth among the WBC participants during the tournament.

“I was waiting to do it in person,” he said.

Sandoval is already looking forward to playing in the WBC again in 2023, and he said he plans to again play for Mexico.

Sandoval was born in California, but his father is Mexican, so he is eligible to play for both countries. When asked what he would do if asked to join Team USA next time, he said: “Too late.”

Sandoval said he felt some resentment that he had not been invited to play for the USA this time, but that left him quickly.

“Once I got with (Mexico), it was like this is where I’m supposed to be,” Sandoval said. “The clubhouse was incredible. Those guys were awesome. It was so much fun to play with those guys.”

Team USA has had a problem attracting top starting pitchers. Sandoval’s message to any pitcher who decided not to play this year: “Play. It’s awesome. So much fun.”

Right-hander Sam Bachman, one of the Angels’ top pitching prospects, is scheduled to start against the Chicago Cubs in the final Cactus League game Saturday. Most of the Angels’ regulars will already have returned to Southern California for the Freeway Series, which begins Sunday. Nevin said Bachman will pitch at least two innings. …

The Oakland A’s announced that left-hander Kyle Muller will start on Opening Day. Nevin said he would use the lineup he feels is best to beat a lefty on that day, without regard to the symbolism of the game. “Opening Day is special, certainly, but we’re trying to win them all and we’re going to try to win Opening Day and put the best team out there,” Nevin said. Jared Walsh has struggled against lefties and Luis Rengifo was excellent against lefties last season, so the Angels could have Walsh on the bench and Rengifo in the middle infield.
